Hi Mates,

Kevin: thanks your post is much appreciated

Been a while since I’ve updated – small update on current work – very part-time in shipyard these days (;-(( - other "things" have absorbed my free time)

---- Had always intended to allow a limited stern view to the inside through side upper and lower windows as well – so did not use Sergal instructions that just applied side window frames against hull timber. (note their instructions image FYI)

So, this area (my first image) is a disaster that had little foresight on my part. And will need lots of work…But I also knew that challenges would hopefully lead to better looking results than following straight  “out-of-the-box” instructions  IMO.

Short text -- images do most of the communicating.

Thanks so much for the many taking a look and the likes

Regards,

Hi all,

Sort of back-to back postings. This is a fix that was so needed. All deck gratings were so out of scale. grrr...

So replaced them. Thanks to the so kind member that suggested that I fix this lol...

1.jpeg.dbad7f60cdc25bb91870db1c71c29079.jpeg2.thumb.jpeg.60b0b5f2944083087aa7d2f5cbdaaa1d.jpeg4.thumb.jpeg.479821a487f0e46a75622233765822cb.jpeg5.thumb.jpeg.d50337036887bc822a5facbf493aaea1.jpeg

May leave the bowsprit alone - Not sure yet.

6.thumb.jpeg.21374582724fdd73647e907459697a85.jpeg

After spending north of $60 USD back and forth with Cornwall in the UK - had to settle for slight size variations. yikes. I wanted to have them all of the size that is superimposed below - but after several attempts to get the same 1.5 mm size gratings that would fit the existing openings (not available) - had to give up  and settle for these 1mm bits that would cut to proper size for these four gratings

Michael,

Your own gratings should be a great lesson for the kit maker.  Yours are superior to most, if not all kit supplied gratings.  Well done.

Allen,

Thanks for your nice comments.

And, yes, kit manufacturers often use generic "parts bins" adding common fittings within their kits; cannons being a primary example. Also lacking in accuracy, even with the most expensive current kits, are blocks and IMO very poor "threads" used for rigging (mostly out of scale)

Actually glad that there are excellent options for purchasing much better quality fittings - I've been, for all of my three builds, using Chuck's Syren company for all of my ropes and blocks... Oh he's even improved the blocks he sells - may need to re-order haha.

Cheers,

Michael

Hi Michael, sorry for being so tardy in keeping up with your build, so now all caught up with all your brilliant kit bashing added lots of likes, don't you just love scratch work I find it so exhilarating.

Like your new gratings and I think you should change the Bowsprit but I know you will because :)

Richard, Thanks for your very kind comments, interest  and likes - so much appreciated -

Yes - you read my mind lol - I will, of course, also remove the out of scale beakhead deck gratings lol

(I used the wrong word in previous post (;-))  -- I posted a lazy thought....but knew it needed to go as well.

PS: your Bluenose build is superb work, AND your new shipyard is not too shabby as either  😍

Hi all,

As they say “third time's a charm” – rebuilt forward section of beakhead deck removing grid and also those out of scale slats.

Then, ship wide also removed, the second attempt better but still non size matching grids and replaced them with new ones at all the decks.

Ok…done with “fixes” (for now at least lol) will now actually move forward with continued work with at the stern section.

Thanks so much for dropping by for a look, likes, and kind comments.

Richard,

Thanks,  Need to get back to her - she's been in idle drydock for over a month. Life has gotten in the way 😎.

And also spent time in Europe for a 1st trip in about three years - given that the planet has been shut down for almost as long.

Hi,

I have been away from this hobby for more than two months and, it was now time to continue the stern portion of this project.

Here are some images of my continued work at the stern area.

For those of you who are kind enough to still follow or just drop in for a look (big thanks) – You may remember that I also intended to mostly scratch build the stern, as well as lowering the poop deck angle from what Sergal suggests in their instructions.

Here are some images, and inserted notes of the work so far.

Cheers to all – enjoy your year-end holidays.

Very nice to see an update Michael, all this rework is looking excellent and going to fantastic once completed.

Got to get some of those micro shapers do have a lot of moldings to do.

Merry Christmas and have a great new year

Richard, always appreciate your kind thoughts. Yes, those shapers are excellent. Given the absolute amount of such perfectly small details that your include

in your builds - these shapers will be awesome for you.

Other suppliers are available --

Marc,

Thanks - yes indeed looks much nicer - We are each our own worst critics, but glad that I went back for the "fix".

Just caught up to your log - Wow -- sculpturing is an area that I will never attempt - I know my limitations hahaha.

Hello,

Alex-Ks1 -- big thanks

Here are some updated images of the continuing work with the stern gallery outer faces. I like how the outer windows turned out. Certainly more historically accurate (haha – this kit has nothing to do with historical accuracy).. though I am a bit regretful, in that all of the previous work (interior floorings, gold trimming on upper and lower inner window frames, and gallery planking are now totally hidden from view - oh well.

FYI: Last image offers a comparison of current kit's metal bit compared to vintage kit's solid bronze bits.

Regards,

I really love your build, bashing and how you show the "old" brass fittings and decorations compared to the "newer" castings.  I have the same model, but also the new castings. I know Amati has a nice decoration set as well, but not the same scale. I'll keep following along. 🙂

Frank: Yes big quality difference indeed – just starting work with lantern housings will post comparisons between vintage and current kit's product as well.

Patrick: Thanks – PS: your new log looks to be another great build!

Peter:  Thanks as well for your much appreciated comment. – welcome aboard – so nice of you. I have, in fact, blended some of the Amati decorative pieces into this build. Have you started your Sovereign?

----------------------------

I did not think that they (all the outer gallery windows) would SO “blacken out” all interior details. SO have decided add LED’s – needed to remove the poop deck as well as the upper stern facing cover for better inside access.

Just purchased LED’s from Evan Designs (a vendor here at MSW) as I did for my Santisima cross section. His lights require a small flat coin battery 2032 holder - as well as incorporating a small on/off switch, or I could use his AAA battery holder, but how to place that inside as well as needing later access – have not figured that out yet. Work in progress….with the coin battery holder could just leave it under the poop deck grating. Tiny on/off switch will need a hidden spot as well. Adding lights should have been thought of - a long time ago - not at this stage of this build so far. Yikes 😁
