Battle of Waterloo Attack on La Haye Sainte Farm by Old Collingwood - 1/56 (28mm)

Recommended Posts

Photos like these show the relationship of the terrain with the structures and vegetation. Maps included in the various histories are good, but being able to see the entire picture really helps to understand a battle. I've been fortunate to be able to walk a number of ACW battles, such as Gettysburg, Antietam and Richmond/Petersburg. These gave me a much better appreciation of events like Pickett's Charge, the Sunken Road and the Crater. Thanks for showing these, OC.

Evening all,   some more progress  -  I finished  painting and weathering  the  cobbled patio, and  glued it in place,  I have also  done a wee bit more weathering to the  farmhouse,  I will  blend  things  in even more so  as  I progress  with  the  ground works.

Morning all,  I have done a  chack  of things  still  to  do   -

I still have the -

Wall to build that goes in front of the patio I just put down.
Extension to the wood store - side - front and roof, and raised up floor.
Work on building a graduated slope where the kitchen garden is - using layers of typing paper.
Fitting my Grass mat over this area.
Make and fit the hedge that goes from the stables to my extreme Right, level with the stables.
Purchase some more French 54th and 55th Line reg troops - paint weather - top coat then place these in the orchard.
Put some odds and ends like loose hats - muskets - backpacks etc scattered around.
Cut the French Cuirassiers off their bases and place the other side of the orchard hedge.
Place my pile of French casualties at the entrance to the Barn.
Finish off making my other single British Cavalry needs painting etc - then place him the other side of the garden hedge.
Place the Lunebourg division remnants in the garden along with a few 5th line KGL wounded.
Then make the trees and fit them in the courtyard.
Any any other bits of touching up where needed.

So yep quite a bit to do yet.

Evening all,     bit more  of an update   -   no pics  as  phone batt  dead again,  any way  I have  been  cleaning up  the  extension  to the  wood  store  sanding it  level  with  the  existing part,  I  have also  created a  false floor  to  bring it up  level  with the  raised  ground  (for when I start  my ground works)   I have also  put a coat of PVA  over it  to lock the  wood fibres  in ready for painting.

Evening all,    more  work  on my  build -  I have been detailing  my  wall  measuring the  brick  spacing  then  engraving  the  mortar   gaps.

Its  hard  to get across  the  tiny  size of  the  wall  pieces  about 12mm   tall  and  4mm  wide  and  not very  long  was  a  real test  on my  engraving skills.

Understanding the history of a battle is as much as understanding what they did as where they did it.... What is easier to understand than the where... A line on a map cannot bring full understanding....

You sir are creating a picture where understanding is plainly evident....

Modeling the where in addition to the what is a class of modeling above the usual...

Your in the groove Brother... A masterpiece in the offing...

Morning all,   so   working forward  -  I have  glued down the  raised  floor  for  the  wood store  (no real  excitement  as it will  be mostly  covered),  but  the next  move  is  to  work  on the  brick  wall, I am  making this a  Belgium Grey  wall  (as  it  was  going from local history and  pics  of the period)    I have  done a  basic  primer  and  stone  Grey  coat,  next   I will  make a few  different  shades  of  Grey  -  Light  -  Dark  -  Sandy   in  a  few  pools  in my  wet pallet  (flower pot  drip  plate)   then randomly  paint  the  bricks  the different  colours,   after  leaving to  dry  I will  then  add my  dry brushing  dust  -  leave  to  dry   then  after  add a few  dark  washes.

Evening all,    working on my wall  -   random  brick colours  done  then a  dusty  dry  brush,  this  will  be  followed up  tomorrow  with a  wash or  Two  to darken  it all  - kind of looks  like a wall.

Morning all,    I have  decided  to  attempt   my  scenery  profiling   using  sheets  of  typing paper  (as  I have these  to  hand)   has  any body  tried   this  formula   for  model  scenery   as  I can not find  any links  on the  net,   its  sounds   straight  forward  in my head  -  just a case  of  having enough  paper  for  the  height  I want  - then just  sloping  the  A4 sheets  in the directions  I want  using PVA   to  keep them in place  and  build  it up  as  I go,  don't foregut  on top  of this  I have my  grass  sheet  that will  be  glued   over the  top  of the  contours.

sounds   straight  forward  in my head  -  just a case  of  having enough  paper  for  the  height  I want  - then just  sloping  the  A4 sheets  in the directions  I want  using PVA   to  keep them in place  and  build  it up  as  I go,  don't foregut  on top  of this  I have my  grass  sheet  that will  be  glued   over the  top  of the  contours.

Should work brother, but it's going to be heavy... I would recommend poster board for the contours, it's thicker and much lighter, and you can put holes in it under the uppermost layers to keep the weight down, then use your typing weight sheets with waters down PVA to give the final layer before doing the grass sheet....

One thing it does do is give you a good surface to mount figures and trees and the like to....
