Just wanted to say hello and mention I am starting my second ship after an uncompleted first attempt (1847 Harvey - Artesania Latina). This new ship is the Polaris from Occre and I will be making a build log here. My goal is to actually complete this ship then go back and finish the Harvey after I get some more experience. 

I'll be researching here and other sources as well as asking many questions to clear things up.

 

I'm 62 and have built quite a few plastic models over the years (and other things) since I was a young boy but, now I am retired I really want to up my skills and focus on wood models. My biggest hurdle will be getting over my OCD of making things perfect which has caused me to fail completing projects in the past.

 

Advice is always welcomed

Welcome. I'm sure everyone here can point out things that they wished they did a little better on a model.  I just try to do each one a little better as my experience and skills improve.

And the reality is that you will spend many hours building a model that even your best friend won't spend more than a minute or two looking at. So just relax and enjoy the process and try to gain skills as you go along.

Okay, that's a little off the beaten path. I tell people here in South Carolina that the vast swathe of California dotted by little towns like Winters is "The Other California" -- the part non-Californians never think of.

Welcome to MSW.   Advice,,,,,  lots of good advice here at MSW, but I think a common piece from many members is that it is better to start with high quality kits that will teach you good practices on the details, including the three vessel series designed by David Antscherl at Model Shipways which is becoming a classic for beginners.  I truly wish these were around when I started back in the day.

Welcome Dave. Don't know if the OCD thing runs rampant here but it's something I deal with often. But if I built everything perfect there wouldn't be any challenges left to keep me building. Hang in there and enjoy the hobby.

I did check those kits out as well as the other one in the series. I almost purchased them but, the Polaris won out.
