We're OK, Alan. The worst was losing a lot of refrigerated and frozen items. I may have to drive a bit further because of the detours. I only have 1 way off my street; the second route requires crossing a ford. Easy in my F-150, high clearance. My Ford Edge with have the front valence removed by the banks of the ford.

Hey Alan - for what it's worth, I tend to spray Vallejo around 15-20 PSI (15ish for their metal colors, 20ish for their paints and primers).  I also thin their paints and primers (not their Metal Colors) with Vallejo's thinner, and sometimes use their flow improver.

 

For a base primer, I'd highly recommend looking at Mr. Surfacer.  I'll usually spray their gray 1200 or 1500 first to see what flaws need to be touched up, and then will spray their black 1500 (e.g., to black base) or white (usually if I need a white undercoat for tricky colors like red and yellow).  You can get them in rattle cans or in jars that you can add Mr. Color Leveling Thinner to and spray in your airbrush.  I'm trying to move more towards acrylics, but the Mr. Surfacer primers really are tough to beat.  They clearly reveal imperfections, can be sanded, and level perfectly.  For big areas like fuselages and wings, I'll use Mr. Surfacer.  For small/detail items, I'll use Vallejo.

Well, I’m back although not with much of a progress update I’m afraid. Hurricane Milton in itself caused very little disruption on the east coast with winds about 30 mph. Unfortunately and unusually there were a large number of powerful tornadoes riding the thunderstorms on the front of the hurricane. One came through my neighborhood with my house on the edge of the track. I’ve got roof damage and smashed windows, trees down. I’m comparatively fortunate and importantly the cats and I are fine, just a bit traumatized in our own ways. On the other side of the street the houses are untouched. But behind my house maybe 150 feet away there is extensive damage and several houses are completely destroyed. It looks like a war zone there. Debris and furniture across the street and glass everywhere.

 The power was out for eight days and came back on Wednesday. I’ve been clearing debris at home and for neighbors. When the windows blew out glass was shot right across the room and after several sweepings and vacuuming I’m still finding shards. The rooms are off limits to the cats for now.

So things are notionally back to normal for me, I have signed up contractors for the repairs and now just have to wait but I look out of my window and see shattered homes. I’m still in shock at how close I was to losing my house and belongings and I feel wretched about the people who have.

im afraid I haven’t felt like picking up a model yet. I need to work through some of this.

Glad to hear you are uninjured, cats also.  Be as long winded as you like, surviving a near miss tornado is very traumatic. Take your time getting back to modeling.

This is a normal feeling to experience. I felt the same way after Helene -- my house was untouched, as were most of the others in my neighborhood (young neighborhood = no mature trees to fall down and crush things), but all around us there was devastation everywhere. Glad to hear you are safe!

Yep, had to empty the freezer and refrigerator into the bin. Most annoying but at least I still have the refrigerator! 😃

starting to get back to the usual reality. Some silver linings emerge. My next door neighbor has grown a papaya tree on my easement and it beats up my gutters in any wind. The tornado took it off three feet above the ground. It also cleared out the trees and brush behind me and restored my lake view

We are an older community so there are a number of people who need a hand and you are right it feels a lot better to be helping

Thank you Andrew. It was a lot wilder than I like. Hopefully we will get the repairs done before we get a lot of rain. The contractors were very efficient talking the deposits and now it’s gone rather quiet

Thank you Jack. The cats are decidedly jumpy but the days are beginning to feel a bit more normal. I’m about tidied up so I might go and look at the Yak tomorrow

Thank you OC. It seems tornadoes are a whole different thing to hurricanes and shutters are not a complete protection

I just got the metal finish sprayed on before everything went upside down here. It looks better than my attempt with the FW200. I worked harder at getting a smooth surface and used gloss black primer under mist coats of Vallejo Metal aluminum. I still have a lot of room for improvement though. I think I will leave the gloss varnish off to be more like the finish that Dan @Danstream noted. I’m going to try a few panels with different shades of metal and some heat affected areas of the nacelles.

your NMF is way ahead of mine and looks great.

Thanks Mike. That’s really helpful. I must try the Mr Surfacer primers. I’m still missing imperfections in my filling and sanding and then not sorting them out in time.

im tending to airbrush primers at about 30 psi undiluted and then I spray the Metal paints at around 20. I do like the way they go on but I need to improve my preparation.

Mr Surfacer is amazing for revealing imperfections.  I am in the middle of riveting my Hs 129 builds, but will try and remember to post a picture of what they look like with Mr Surfacer primer on.  The product really is amazing for revealing things.

This update really shows the work prior to getting dusted off by the tornado. The metal finish was airbrushed using Vallejo Metal Aluminium which went on easily but I'm afraid it shows I need to do a better job of the surface prior to painting. However I think the shine is about what is needed for this aircraft. I masked some panels (based on some Yak 27R photos) and sprayed Vallejo Dark Aluminium and added some Vallejo Jet Exhaust lightly sprayed at the hot end of the engine nacelles. That could be heavier but I didn't want to overdo it.

The canopy came out okay considering the frame details were nonexistent. 

Time to start adding the details and then the landing gear which looks a bit of a challenge.

Good result Alan! I use the Vallejo Metallic on top of Tamiya gloss black and they work fine (I find the Tamiya X-1 better than the Vallejo's). As you noted, the preparation of the surfaces is as important as the finish itself. Note that these paints can be happily mixed with each other and you can obtain subtler tonal variations if needed.

Following your build, though I am a bit silent in these days.

Thank you very much Dan. For some reason it didn’t occur to me that I could mix the various metal colors. I’ll try that next time. I found that the dark aluminum although dry was rather fragile initially and I used a cotton bud in places to shade the color down a bit. After 24 hours it was a durable finish.

Wow, Alan, I was just catching up and wanted to underline what Mike said about Mr. Surfacer primers, when I saw, what you went through. Glad you and your cats were unharmed and the damage was not too much. It must have been a frightening experience.

Your Yak looks fantastic and the NMF underlines the cool retro futuristic fifies jet thing.

I also recommend Mr. Surfacer highly. I use them in black, grey and white ranging from 1000, 1200 and 1500, thinned with Mr. Leveling thinner.
As a base for NMF finishes, I use Tamiya´s lacquer gloss black also thinned with Mr. Leveling thinner. Properly sprayed, you don´t need to polish it.
Years ago, I used many Valejo products, but was often not too satisfied with the results, specially with the primers and some of the model air range.
They had a tendency to build up pigments on the AB needle and sputter, mainly because you can´t use proper thinner with them.
