What is the historical purpose of the "slight off set/change in width" in planking on the stern? It appears that the planks are the same thickness.

Not quite sure what your asking? The widths of the planking do narrow up a bit as they get further forward and aft on the hull, widest around midships.

You think that you may build Portland after you finish Speedwell Rusty? I'm sure JJ would be delighted!

Oh I'm very interested in adding this to my must do list. :)

Beautiful work on the planking Ben. That boxwood looks lovely. Really looking forward to seeing the ebony go on.

Thanks JJ

I had toyed with the idea of doing the channel wales in Ebony but finally decided to keep things closer to the paintings.

That’s a lot of precision cutting. I’d be interested to see your plank cutting method. I can never seem to get a consistent thickness, making my Byrnes planer an essential tool.

Glenn

Fitting and trimming of the false lower counter panel, then cut off the lower ears and fair everything in before adding the aft planking tick strips again and starting to plank again.

Wow that looks really good Ben. I think I want to start over on mine lol.

is that black hornbeam?

Hi JJ

No - it’s not Hornbeam, I was going to use ebony but an old friend and mentor talked me out of it, So I’m trying Holly dyed with fiebigs at his suggestion. I’ve used Pear dyed with fiebigs before on Pegasus that came out well so I was interested to see how it works with the Holly - I’m quite pleased so far but will reserve final judgement until it’s all completed, sealed and buffed out.

That look very good Ben.  She is coming along.

JJ …I have dyed yellow cedar black with great results.  Just do so off the model.  If you have to sand and touch up its OK as long as you have no drips.  That dye can be messy.  So you must use extreme care.

Holly takes up Fiebings dye beautifully and buffs to a nice matte finish. But I do treat it like it's radioactive as one errant drop will be a permanent feature of your model. I do touch ups on the model but always try to apply it before gluing it in place though.

That looks very good. I may experiment with some AYC just for fun. Will you be able to fair it out and then add dye again?

What you see has already been dyed off the model, then glued in place, lightly sanded, and dyed again in place being very careful and using a q-tip to apply it with more accuracy - care must be taken with this stuff.

I’m going to sand down my wales again, I got that appearance when doing the black strake by applying thinned down paint but the wales didn’t go quite as well. I’m going to lightly sand them down and apply dye with a small cloth. Looks  very good.

literally a Q-tip is much better.  A cloth could get messy no matter how small.

Copy that. Does that stuff penetrate through WOP? I make sure I drown my planks with WOP before any paint comes close to the hull.
