  1. Welcome to Model Ship World Daniele. You have come to the right place to learn how to build ship models. Have you already selected a kit to build?
  2. I believe it was the 80 tooth blade that I used. A word of caution on the commercial nail files. Some have a soft core, so when you sand it is possible that it will round off the edge. For this reason, I use 1/8" plywood and make my own sanding sticks. They provide a solid base for the sand paper to be rubber glued on and do not cause the edge of the item being sanded to be rounded off. Go slow and keep tweaking and it will turn out really well.
  3. Glad to see another Medway Longboat under construction. It is a great kit and if you follow the instructions it will turn out very nicely. I used my Byrnes saw to help with the scarf joint. I set the blade height to slightly less than half the thickness of the keel and removed the wood by running it over the blade, moving it slightly with each pass letting the saw blade remove the wood in the scarf joint. I then cleaned up the joint with a sharp chisel and a homemade sanding stick. I practiced this on scrap wood a couple of times as you only have one chance to get it right. The Byrnes saw just helps to speed up the process, but for me, I probably could have done it just as quick with a chisel and some sanding sticks. The good thing is the outside of the keel is the only portion of this procedure that will be seen as everything else gets covered up by planking. I too purchased the digital tool to measure blade height and it sits in my toolbox waiting for another use.
  4. Welcome to Model Ship World Qakeith. You did a really good job on your Cutty Sark. This model must mean a lot to you as it brings up memories of the first time you built this ship. I like the last picture with the model in its display case. I hope this is the start to many more ship models.
  5. Welcome to Model Ship World Guy. You have been given good advice from the above comments. I hope you find a good kit that peaks your interest, Check out some of the first builds by members in the kit build log section. Just click on the black tag marked "first build" and it will pull up build logs that have this tag attached to it. Good luck on your selection.
  6. Welcome to Model Ship World Per. You have built some very fine models. I hope you start a build log on your Dannebrog as we would like to follow your progress on this build.
  7. Hi Genny and welcome to Model Ship World. You have selected a good kit and OcCre is famous for its YouTube tutorials. We will not let you fail on building your Beagle. I am looking forward to seeing photos of your progress.
  8. Welcome to Model Ship World. There are a lot of outstanding plastic builds on this site, but I hope you take a stab at building a wooden ship model. Planking can be fun if it is done right. There are several tutorials on planking on this site. These can be accessed by using the search function or clicking on the "More" tab at the top of this page.
  9. Looks like a nice kit and you have a good start on it. I will not tell anyone your secret.
  10. Congratulations on completing your Titanic. It is one of the nicest built models of this ship that I have seen. I look forward to your next project.
  11. Salem, Welcome to Model Ship World. Another option for your Swift instructions is to get an external USB DVD player. These can be purchased for around $25. The instructional DVD that you have has video tutorials and modeling tips on it in addition to the step-by-step build instructions with pictures according to AL. The DVD would probably help you have a more enjoyable building experience.

  16. Congratulations on completing your Longboat. I echo the comments above about this fantastic build. It is nice to see this model built with sails.
  17. You are doing a good job on your model. I can tell by your build log that you are having a good time building this model.
  18. Looks like a nice book. I will have to look for a copy for my library. I have edited the topic to reflect the book you are showing. I am looking forward to the NRG Conference there as the pictures show that the Museum is my type of place I like to visit.
  19. Bob, I am ready to start the rigging of my Medway Longboat and I was wondering what thread you used for the seizing and serving of the lines. Your work looks very nice and your thread color was an excellent match. I have been told that Gutermann 100 denier line is excellent for this, but I am unable to find it locally. Seizing and serving is a first for me and I do not know what to buy thread wise. I am assuming you used cotton line as I have been told it will take glue better than polyester. Also, do you recommend any rigging how-to-do videos or posts that will be helpful. I am looking forward to this task as it will be a learning experience for me.
  20. Welcome to Model Ship World, Nanesse. I hope you find the information on the Sovereign of the Seas that you are looking for. The Search function is the best way to find the information you are looking for.
  21. Nice work on your finished models. You can post pictures of these in the Gallery section of the forum. Here is a link to the Gallery forum: https://modelshipworld.com/gallery/ Each model should be shared in an album.
  22. Welcome Aaron to Model Ship World. Thanks for the kind comments about the MSW members. If you get a chance, we would like to see some examples of your work. I was fortunate to see the scrimshaw collection at Mystic Seaport when I took a behind the scene tour during a past NRG Conference. It was amazing work done by master artists.
