Welcome to Model Ship World. There are a lot of outstanding plastic builds on this site, but I hope you take a stab at building a wooden ship model. Planking can be fun if it is done right. There are several tutorials on planking on this site. These can be accessed by using the search function or clicking on the "More" tab at the top of this page.

Salem, Welcome to Model Ship World. Another option for your Swift instructions is to get an external USB DVD player. These can be purchased for around $25. The instructional DVD that you have has video tutorials and modeling tips on it in addition to the step-by-step build instructions with pictures according to AL. The DVD would probably help you have a more enjoyable building experience.

Bob, I am ready to start the rigging of my Medway Longboat and I was wondering what thread you used for the seizing and serving of the lines. Your work looks very nice and your thread color was an excellent match. I have been told that Gutermann 100 denier line is excellent for this, but I am unable to find it locally. Seizing and serving is a first for me and I do not know what to buy thread wise. I am assuming you used cotton line as I have been told it will take glue better than polyester. Also, do you recommend any rigging how-to-do videos or posts that will be helpful. I am looking forward to this task as it will be a learning experience for me.

Nice work on your finished models. You can post pictures of these in the Gallery section of the forum. Here is a link to the Gallery forum: https://modelshipworld.com/gallery/ Each model should be shared in an album. -
Welcome Aaron to Model Ship World. Thanks for the kind comments about the MSW members. If you get a chance, we would like to see some examples of your work. I was fortunate to see the scrimshaw collection at Mystic Seaport when I took a behind the scene tour during a past NRG Conference. It was amazing work done by master artists.

Welcome to Model Ship World Doug. You have come to the right site to learn to build a wooden ship model. This is a very enjoyable and satisfying hobby. I would like to offer you another option for getting started in this hobby. David Antscherl is a master craftsman and builder of museum quality ship models. He has also authored many books on ship modeling. He has developed two kits designed for people new to this hobby. Here is a link to his Lowell Grand Banks dory model that includes the kit and all of the tools and supplies needed to build this model. You can also check out the instructions for this kit. https://modelexpo-online.com/Lowell-Grand-Banks-Dory-with-Tools-124-Scale_p_3959.html This is a good place to start and you will learn techniques that will help you on future builds. You will not find a better teacher and mentor than David. Good luck on whatever kit you choose.

Olha, I learn something new every time you post one of your videos. I will look at the many finishes available in a different light after seeing your video. I never thought about mixing different finishes to give the model volume and depth.

Hi James and welcome to Model Ship World. The Red Baron is an excellent kit for someone that is new to the wooden ship modeling hobby. This kit has a detailed instruction manual with plenty of color pictures that will help you during your build. With your professional experience and critical eye for details, I have no doubt that you will create a highly crafted Maine lobster boat. I look forward to seeing your build log once you post it.

About the NRG
If you enjoy building ship models that are historically accurate as well as beautiful, then The Nautical Research Guild (NRG) is just right for you.
The Guild is a non-profit educational organization whose mission is to “Advance Ship Modeling Through Research”. We provide support to our members in their efforts to raise the quality of their model ships.
The Nautical Research Guild has published our world-renowned quarterly magazine, The Nautical Research Journal, since 1955. The pages of the Journal are full of articles by accomplished ship modelers who show you how they create those exquisite details on their models, and by maritime historians who show you the correct details to build. The Journal is available in both print and digital editions. Go to the NRG web site (www.thenrg.org) to download a complimentary digital copy of the Journal. The NRG also publishes plan sets, books and compilations of back issues of the Journal and the former Ships in Scale and Model Ship Builder magazines.
