That looks like a good photo etch bender. I'm going to order one.

I noticed they also have Photo Etch Cut Off Sets for cutting out the photo etch parts. Do either of you use anything like this or do you just use some sharp, photo etch cutting pliers?

I am following David Antscherl's guide for planking

I'm curious about the differences are between the Antscherl method of planking and Chuck's method of planking? The two methods appear to be similar in lining off the hull but have differences when it comes to shaping and bending the plank. I'm far from being all that knowledgeable about planking but it seems that the Antscherl method has you spile every plank as necessary without any edge bending whereas Chuck's method uses heat to edge bend as necessary. Do you know if this is correct when comparing the two methods?

  3. I just received a Kell honing guide ordered directly from Richard Kell. I haven't used it yet but it is a beautifully made tool and he is a wonderful man to do business with. He was very helpful and prompt in answering my questions.

PS  a couple of people sent personal messages asking what sharpening stones I use. I gave up stones some time ago in favour of wet-and-dry paper stuck to a sheet of plate glass. That way I can use (and easily replace) a wide range of grits to suit whatever sharpening or honing I need to do.

I think you have posted this before elsewhere but, since we are on the subject in this thread, can you explain your sharpening process using the various grits of sandpaper again for us, Derek? Thanks!

  4. I just saw your models in the gallery and they are stunning. Fantastic work, Mark!

I see that you have made models of the Fitzgerald and the old and new Coast Guard Cutters Mackinaw. I would love to see you make a build log of your next model so we could see the materials and interesting techniques you use to make these wonderful models.

I served aboard the Coast Guard Cutter Storis WAGB-38 based out of Kodiak, Alaska, way back in 1966-67. Like the old Mackinaw, the Storis was also built at the Toledo Shipyards a couple of years earlier in 1941. We were able to do light to medium ice-breaking but didn't go into the heavy pack ice in the arctic.

    Thanks for sharing your work!
