Paul, You're pretty handy with those miniature chisels. The capstans look very nice. Tom -

Bob, Yes, it's a significant accomplishment, and one you should be proud of. I have no doubt the masting and rigging will be equally impressive. Keep up the good work and continue to send us pictures. Tom- 525 replies

Matti, the model is coming along quite nicely. One thing does strike me as odd: the brass lettering. If all else on the Clara May is weathered looking shouldn't that also? Are they painted wooden letters? Tom

Make room for my Stratolounger power recliner boys 'cause I'm watch'n this one too. Tom -
More amazing work from you Glen. I hope that the model's final resting place, wherever it may be, is some place where lots and lots of people get to see it. This is just way too nice a model to end up in your den or some CEO's office. Stuff this special should be seen by the masses. ;-) Tom

Nils, Holy cow! I didn't realize this ship had so many vents. The red interior of them on the card model makes them stand out and really emphasizes their number. Tom

Jerry, It would be interesting to see what you can do with a challenging figurehead and elaborate stern carvings in European boxwood. Something tells me they would come out pretty darn nice. I like your change to cherry. Have you ever worked with pear wood? As you apparently like the reddish hue of cherry you might want to consider trying Swiss pear wood for your next model. Tom

Jerry, A restart? Oh brother! Starting over is no fun, but sometimes it's just necessary. I know because I'm in the process starting over after an accident that ruined a bread and butter construction model of a 20 gun ship I was working on. It's difficult, but you have to do it. Like you I'm not posting any pictures until I have something new to show. I look forward to following your build of Bonhomme Richard. Yes it's the same subject; but with different wood, a much larger shop, and a bunch of new tools it's got to feel like a brand new project. With that goes the hope of a smooth trouble free build. Good Luck! Tom

At 1:32 scale you should be able to build an enormous amount of detail into the model. Tom

Nils, That was quite imaginative the way you made the vents from tubing and some household items. Nicely done! Tom

Mark, I love the way you work at this model, embroiled in a never-ending battle with Licorne. Few things come easy for you but in the end you always manage to pull it off. Your perseverance is admirable and you have my respect. Thomas Carlyle, a famous Scottish philosopher and essayist, once said "Permanence, perseverance, and persistence in spite of all obstacles, discouragements, and impossibilities: It is this, that in all things distinguishes the strong soul from the weak." 'atta way Mark, make the Licorne bend to your will. Tom

Cathead, I too would like to see you do Arabia, but at age 36 I don't see any good reason why you can't do 'em all. ;-) My gosh, at your age you could build a whole fleet! Tom

Paul, As I'm biased towards frigates I too will follow along. Paul, I noticed in one of your posts that you were doing some research on the Brodie stove. I hope you saw the one Alex M (Alex Matvijets) did for for his model of the 20 gun post ship HMS Sphynx. To say it's nice is a gross understatement. Tom

Frigate Boston by overdale - FINISHED

Daniel, I had an opportunity to read through your build log and I'm impressed. The Boston is really sweet looking. When I checked your profile I saw you had a website too. A look was in order. Again, your work is first rate. Especially eye-catching is the diorama of the Nuestra Senora de Atocha going aground. I will surely pull up a chair and follow the rest of the Boston build. Tom -

Kit or scratch? Who knows? I might call it a hybrid build, but regardless of what term used you are off to a great start. Tools? Well, once you catch the bug, and I suspect you're already "infected", you will always want more of them. Erik, there is no cure! ;-) Tom -
Model builders dread to redo anything, but when they've finished doing one they are most often glad they did it. ;-) Tom

Just as the Greek Hephaestus was the blacksmith for the gods in Olympus so too are you the king of metalworking in a forum full of great model builders. Your work is incredible!

About the NRG
If you enjoy building ship models that are historically accurate as well as beautiful, then The Nautical Research Guild (NRG) is just right for you.
The Guild is a non-profit educational organization whose mission is to “Advance Ship Modeling Through Research”. We provide support to our members in their efforts to raise the quality of their model ships.
The Nautical Research Guild has published our world-renowned quarterly magazine, The Nautical Research Journal, since 1955. The pages of the Journal are full of articles by accomplished ship modelers who show you how they create those exquisite details on their models, and by maritime historians who show you the correct details to build. The Journal is available in both print and digital editions. Go to the NRG web site (www.thenrg.org) to download a complimentary digital copy of the Journal. The NRG also publishes plan sets, books and compilations of back issues of the Journal and the former Ships in Scale and Model Ship Builder magazines.
