I've had a couple of weeks off from Sirius and the cutter over Christmas under orders from her who must be obeyed, she suggested I made something for her mother as she is more into the boats that I'm making than the wife, in fact she has my old cutty Sark on her mantelpiece, I found on eBay a constructo kit for a Thames steam barge, the model had already been started and all the frames etc were missing but for £10 I thought what the hell As we live in Cookham which some of you may know (Druxey does) we are on the side of the Thames so I thought this wold be perfect for her, it arrived the day before Xmas eve, I cut my own bulkheads from the sheets still in the box and laid the first plank at 12.15 on Xmas eve This is the finished job today and I'm giving it to her tomorrow as a belated Xmas present.

HI William Sorry to be the bearer of bad news again but you need to file the edges of the deadeyes if you are going to use those and make a ridge for the shrouds to sit in, or make some with wood, have a look at some other logs and deadeyes, the lanyards could then be reduced in thickness by half as well and would all look better at least half the thickness of your shrouds would be more to scale. Regards Paul

Hi Christian That is a davit used with the windlass to lift the anchor rope and isn't part of the helm, when in use the rudder was unshipped and the davit removed when the rudder was in use, there should also be holes at either end of the windlass for turning with two bars, the davit sits in a step on the rear floor angled to stop it going over the stern under weight Hope that helps Regards Paul

Hi William/sailor Period ships most certainly did have draught marks, please see my log for the HMS Sirius where I showed photos of the actual marks from the Sirius brought up from the wreck, unfortunately you have put them in the wrong place on the rudder but hey!!!

About the NRG
If you enjoy building ship models that are historically accurate as well as beautiful, then The Nautical Research Guild (NRG) is just right for you.
The Guild is a non-profit educational organization whose mission is to “Advance Ship Modeling Through Research”. We provide support to our members in their efforts to raise the quality of their model ships.
The Nautical Research Guild has published our world-renowned quarterly magazine, The Nautical Research Journal, since 1955. The pages of the Journal are full of articles by accomplished ship modelers who show you how they create those exquisite details on their models, and by maritime historians who show you the correct details to build. The Journal is available in both print and digital editions. Go to the NRG web site (www.thenrg.org) to download a complimentary digital copy of the Journal. The NRG also publishes plan sets, books and compilations of back issues of the Journal and the former Ships in Scale and Model Ship Builder magazines.
