Hi mark, a steady pace is better than stopped! I would be like you if I was doing a V2.0, slow and making a lot of checks - you seem to have that well under control. Ben

Awesome looking hull Ed, up to your usual fantastic standards, i think it will take me quite a while longer than 5 months to get to that stage on Pegasus. Ben

Thanks Rusty and Augie and the likes. Augie - she will be bigger than the Confed, but small compared to the next way in the future project. Ben

Small update, Stem Pieces, Lower and Upper Apron and Fore Deadwood completed and glued to the keel. I used some bamboo treenails and a #65 bit to add some heavy reinforcement to these pieces as you can see. Now I need to do the tapering up/down from 14" at top to 10" and the keel. I have started making the aft deadwood pieces from 15" stock. ben

Hi As Augie said, there's always plenty of other things to prepare for, ships boats if you intend to do them, making and rigging all the cannons would be a great one to get out of the way, just be sure to make a mockup and test on the model to make sure the heights are correct to your gunports before the production line starts cranking them out! Sweet!!!!!!! How did you do the framing around the cutaway section, single fancy cut like I did or 3 planks like Chuck? Ben

Sorry to hear about your decision but understand why you have come to it! I will watch v2.0 along with everyone else and greatly enjoy seeing what you come up with. Ben

Work has started on the lower apron, this is one complicated piece to make, I started by cutting the pattern out on 18" stock and trying at the moment to refine its shape to fit the stem pieces. I actually cut two out and I will use one to practice cutting the steps for the cant frames. This could take a while! Ben

Looks really good to me Rusty, scale looks correct and not too big. And modifying chucks 12 pounders is a nice touch. Ben

Very nicely painted upper works Augie! But now the real test begins! Just remember to trim your prespiled planks to fit your hull, it won't be the same as chucks, you have to adjust every plank! Keep your garboard low at the last bulkhead before the stem or your planking will ride up. Ben

Piece of advice when you start again Iran, make your own keel clamp that holds the ENTIRE keel, not a few points or half the keel, the entire keel! I used some scrap wood screwed to a 2x4 which worked great for me, and don't take it out of there for more than a few minutes. I look forward to seeing you start up again. Ben

Hi Iran, sorry to hear the twist/warping has not abated, can you try and get a head on pic so we can see where and how bad it is if possible???? Is it down the long length of the hull or one bulkhead just twisted? If it's down the long length you may be able to correct it with some stragically placed fillers, but if ME will send you new parts then I would agree with Chuck to restart. Nothing more important than having that skeleton perfect, even if it takes a month to get it that way! Good luck man! Ben

About the NRG
If you enjoy building ship models that are historically accurate as well as beautiful, then The Nautical Research Guild (NRG) is just right for you.
The Guild is a non-profit educational organization whose mission is to “Advance Ship Modeling Through Research”. We provide support to our members in their efforts to raise the quality of their model ships.
The Nautical Research Guild has published our world-renowned quarterly magazine, The Nautical Research Journal, since 1955. The pages of the Journal are full of articles by accomplished ship modelers who show you how they create those exquisite details on their models, and by maritime historians who show you the correct details to build. The Journal is available in both print and digital editions. Go to the NRG web site (www.thenrg.org) to download a complimentary digital copy of the Journal. The NRG also publishes plan sets, books and compilations of back issues of the Journal and the former Ships in Scale and Model Ship Builder magazines.
