Your build is so amazing. The closer you look the more realistic it appears! Have you ever considered placing people on the ship? https://northstarmodels.com/product-category/figures/1-350/

Dave's 1951 XK120 Jag Roadster - FINISHED - 1/24th scale
lmagna replied to SawdustDave's topic in Non-ship/categorised builds
Years ago in a 1/24th Chevy Chaparral semi scratch build I was able to take copper wire and made pretty good, (At least I thought they were) exhaust manifolds. -
If I planted myself in my chair building for 10 hours they would have to bring in a stretcher to get me out! My back would be welded in place! But the pictures show that when you do it, the results are phenomenal.

Just keeping an eye on you making sure you are doing it right.

Excuse me for getting so much enjoyment out of your misery, but this is such a fantastic build. If it makes you feel a little better I was rereading some of my stuff on the Bismarck's battle with the Hood and Prince of Wales to reset my memory and correct my knowledge on details of the action as discussed in channell's build. In the process of getting my education and knowledge revised I read that one of the first hits on the Bismarck from the POW was in the launches! I suspect they did not fair well. So it seems the Prince Of Wales got your revenge for you years ago.
-
Now it seems you have added lying to your accomplishments! I am SO HAPPY with my work on the Providence at this point that I am thinking of starting all over from the framework out!

Thanks Mark I suspected that when channell brought it up that it had come from somewhere. I had just not seen it in the several books and accounts I had read over the years. Also admittedly all several years ago as well. Now I know the source. I do not have that particular book but I will stand corrected. I also did some back reading of a book I do have "The German Fleet At war 1939-1945 by Vincent O'Hara and he also states that the Bismarck lost her forward radar in firing on the Norfolk. He still maintains that Lutjens placed the Bismarck to the rear so he could possibly hold off or incapacitate the cruisers with his bigger guns should they give him the opportunity. So I have to take full blame for forgetting the radar part as I read this book after some of the others I have.

It is when Thunder builds it. I doubt the results would be the same if it was me for example!

I think channell is a little more correct at 12-15 miles on the range OC I believe 20-25 miles is over the horizon kind of range and I don't think any of the ships involved had that ability. I don't think i have ever read that the Bismarck had lost radar but it has been a while since I read up on her ant the battle so I could be wrong. It was my understanding that as admiral Lutjens knew about the cruisers and all the ships were in and out of visible range he took the opportunity to put the more powerful Bismarck in the rear hoping that they would make the mistake of closing to get a better look and he could dispatch them before they knew what had happened. That would have allowed him to continue his escape into the Atlantic. He had to assume there were bigger British ships coming but prior to the Hood and Prince of Wales coming over the horizon had no idea of where, who, or when. It was also my understanding that it was admiral Holland that ordered his ships to open fire on the Prinz Eugen because as you said the distance was great and it was very early in the morning and the light was not all that good. Plus that was where he EXPECTED the Bismarck to be. Captain Leach thought they were not firing on the right ship but followed orders for the first few salvos before switching to the Bismarck before his guns failed all together. Again this all is mostly from memory and a VERY condensed version of events as well. It really has been a while since I have read up on the battle and of course new things are discovered every day.

There were a number of reasons the "Oood" blew up. Mostly all faults with her design and the tactics used in her last battle rather than the superior nature of the Bismarck. Used properly there is a very good chance that the outcome could have been considerably different. But as you say, luck is a factor as well. Numbers is numbers, but it is a shock to me to see the size discrepancy between the two. I thought there was only about 40' difference in over all length. It would also be interesting to see the relationship of the Prinz Eugen in the picture as well. She was about 125' shorter than the Bismarck so it makes you wonder why the Hood and POW opened up on the Prinz Eugen mistaking her for the Bismarck.

Tools, tools and more tools....
lmagna replied to CPDDET's topic in Modeling tools and Workshop Equipment
Are you looking in my closet again John? Guilty, GUILTY, and guilty. But I do take them out now and again and at least pet them, MY PRECIOUS! -
If they do prove to be too fragile in the extended position then it should be fairly easy to convert them to the stowed configuration. (?) Either way it is going to be impressive.

Pete Sounds like an ambitious set of projects. You will probably find a lot of help in the KG5 as she seems to be pretty popular. Possibly not so much help will be available in the 1/700 build, I could be wrong but you may be the first in that size here but welcome to the "Plastic Invasion." The Scottish Maid seems to be popping up a lot lately so I am certain it will be popular. The story of the Emden is of course famous as is the trek of her landing party in getting back to Germany. That kind of history is what inspires me to build a ship most times, sometimes unfortunately. Looking forward to your logs.

Welcome Pete Can I borrow your wife for a few weeks? No not really, mine is pretty good about my ever expanding stash, and besides after almost 39 years I have become accustomed to her, (and she tolerates me and doesn't remind me too often of my shortcomings)! So with a new airbrush and 66 models, or plans for models what will you jump on first?

There is a section for builds other than ships. I also suspect that there may be another dollhouse or two out there based on how skillful people here are and how much they like to work with wood. Plus we can't be the only ones who have bowed to our wife's wishes now and then over the years. Sometimes wisely and like this time sometimes not! So after you have consulted with your psychiatrist take a look at your PM folder. It is obvious you are a sick man!

BEWARE of the trap OC or one place in your house will look like this: It's about four feet high and almost as long and wide! I has been, "In progress" for about 20 years and is nowhere near done! BUT if you insist, I have another slightly smaller one still in the box that I would be more than glad to send you if you want to pay the postage for a 60-70 pound box-o-house!

Please do. It would seem to be a necessary part of any build.

Not sure what to do about the "Bounty" except possibly go down to your local stationary store and see if you can get some Letterset stick on letters and do a Do-over. http://www.pcbsupplies.com/dry-transfer-lettering-white-letters-by-letraset/ You could possibly soak the windows off and re-glue the outer windows into the right position then center the middle window and lastly center the other two windows in the remaining spaces. That should make them evenly spaced all the way across and reach the full distance. You need to remember you are not dealing with a very high grade quality kit and that makes some things harder than you might expect. Don't be so tough on yourself. Everything you are doing, you are doing for the first time!

About the NRG
If you enjoy building ship models that are historically accurate as well as beautiful, then The Nautical Research Guild (NRG) is just right for you.
The Guild is a non-profit educational organization whose mission is to “Advance Ship Modeling Through Research”. We provide support to our members in their efforts to raise the quality of their model ships.
The Nautical Research Guild has published our world-renowned quarterly magazine, The Nautical Research Journal, since 1955. The pages of the Journal are full of articles by accomplished ship modelers who show you how they create those exquisite details on their models, and by maritime historians who show you the correct details to build. The Journal is available in both print and digital editions. Go to the NRG web site (www.thenrg.org) to download a complimentary digital copy of the Journal. The NRG also publishes plan sets, books and compilations of back issues of the Journal and the former Ships in Scale and Model Ship Builder magazines.
