  1. Hi All,

Here is what I have put together since this thread started. Pictured left to right: shellac, poly urethane, thinned white PVA, thinned wood PVA, CA, thin CA. The shellac, poly and the thinned PVA stores and works great out of the squeeze bottles. During my ratline learning experience, I used every one of these except the thin CA. They all worked. That being said, I loved the way the shellac soaked into the rope and was invisible afterwards. The poly did the same thing, except I can’t take the fumes. Can’t move things around as fast as when you use CA, and when I did use CA, yep got the shiny blob, going to have to maybe touch up with some paint. Each of these adhesives have their own personalities and uses in rigging (and any other building).

I think I am a shellac convert and can see its use as a sealer before paint and as an adhesive for some rigging. The only drawback is it really drys up fast when you put a drop or two on a plate to dip a needle point into. Oh well. So, that’s my research. 😀

  2. Good Saturday Morning Everyone,

As I get nearer to completion of the Lady Nelson… the thought of display now looms large in my head (Admiral is also constantly asking “where you going to put these things”?) 😆 My home with forced air heating and cooling is dusty. No explanation, ducts are clean, Hepa filter being used, register filters being used, bla-bla-bla. Maybe something to do with living in the PNW and all the trees?  My choices are: build an enclosure or not.

Question for the masses. Those of you who did not build enclosures: what does your ship look like 1, 2, 3 years or more regarding dust (airborne particles)? I fear mine would look like it was in a snow storm after 4 or 5 years. I can’t even imagine trying to “dust” a completed ship. Discussion?

  3. Hello Everyone,

It’s Friday night and I just finished up the starboard side ratlines. First let me say… ratlines were a challenge on this first build, probably because I messed up the order of rigging. The starboard side turned out much better than the port as I learned the techniques and got better tweezers (wow what a difference they make). Lots of imperfections to be sure, but lots of learning took took place and I made notes for the Rattlesnake coming up.

    On to the anchors. 😀

  4. Dave, I'm there with you. All my block work and seizings are done with CA. To fast and don't come undone, regardless of the type rope (natural or synthetic). Right, wrong or indifferent... it works. Now if we get to sloppy with it, yep it shows and is most of the time shiny. This first build of mine has shown me where I prefer to use it and where I don't. I have never heard anyone say no CA on any rigging. I see master builders on YouTube use it for seizings.

  5. Just now, amateur said:

When turning to pva, make sure your rigging line is natural stuff.

The guterman polyester thread   I used doesn't mind the PVA, and keeps loosening up ....

    Jan

That’s what I assumed, and think that’s what happened to me and why I initially went to ca glue. So… no more ca for me under any circumstances for ratlines. I am experimenting with shellac, polyurethane, and wood PVA. I’m starting the starboard side ratlines today and am going to use cotton rope for sure and see what happens. Good input Jan! 👍😀

  6. Good Sunday Morning Everyone,

John, I just completed the port side ratlines last night. No photo just yet. I did everything I could right and wrong including what glue to use and used 3 different glues; CA, diluted wood PVA and polyurethane. I’ve got the knots down, but here to tell you, when you get up to the top of the shrouds and space becomes a premium, there is no way to tie the clove hitch… so I did what I could. 😊 It will take a few days and then I’ll post some photos. I am NOT using CA so don’t hammer me for it. I had used some on the port side, then found a thread about glueing ratlines and got that fired up. 😁Thanks for all your input and support guys! 👍😀
