  1. Aggies looking really smart mate, well done. You can post a new topic in shore leave for your Stage Coach, really don't want to have to join another forum to see it. Hopefully it's all de-laminated by now so progress and pictures are all imminent. Be Good mobbsie
  2. I'll go along with Augie and Mark Denis, the guys provided the rifle mate and you fired the bullets, accurately as well. It's fitting that you should have some gold on board mate, seeing as how this is a gold star build. It's a real shame she's coming to completion, we've all enjoyed this trip and no doubt we are all looking forward to see what you come up with in the future. Be proud mate. Be Good mobbsie
  3. That's some gob smackingly good work Augie, great stuff. Your joinery on the Margin Plank and waterway is first class too mate, well done. Be Good mobbsie
  4. That really is a road trip and a half mate. Like I say, enjoy it and most of all be safe. Be Good mobbsie
  5. Just found you Captn, mind if I stow away and stick my head up now and again. I think were in for just as interesting a ride as with the Bounty Launch. Really looking forward to it. Be Good mobbsie
  6. Just caught up with your log mate and boy you've made some excellent progress. Those yards look brilliant John, well done. I know your not off yet but have a great ( and safe ) trip, 5 months, that's the stuff dreams are made of. Be Good mobbsie
  7. Hi Sjors, Looking good mate, she's getting some teeth now, nice. To answer your question, It is Wale, the wale is the black wooden band on each side of the ship. This can also be called a rubbing strip which protects the main structure of a ship when tied alongside the dock. What you have put on is the brass decorative strip and is not the wale. Hope that's ok mate. Be Good mobbsie
  8. Hi Gents, Further to that particular question Mark, those shells were just empty cases, when it was time to fire them they were taken from the magazine to the Master's cabin where they were loaded with powder and the fuses put in. There was only ever one loaded shell allowed on deck at a time and there was a series of blast curtains from the cabin to the firing point. When loaded these shell weighed in excess of 200lb's. Granado did not carry a ships boat and any additional empty shells required were ferried across by other ships boats, there has been a discussion on the forum regarding the Granado not having a boat but when you look at the ship itself there really is nowhere to stow one, with regard to towing a boat, I know that ships of the line towed theirs when going into action but Granado was a siege ship and so was firmly anchored in position prior to firing. Just my two cents ( pennies ) worth. Be Good mobbsie
  9. No dust here Denis, thanks for looking mate and thanks for the discussion, it's all good worthwhile input. Be Good mobbsie
  10. Hi Guys, Denis, You certainly didn't let the grass grow under your feet in finding that kit, it certainly looks the part and is a good representation but the scale at 1/48 is most definitely wrong. The Bawley from Stem to Stern excluding the Bowsprit is 38ft long with a beam of 14ft, the model measures 19" long and 7" wide, this equates to 1/2" to the ft. Following Grants explanation that makes it 1/24. I must be totally honest here and say that I have more chance of flying to Mars than working out scales, the term "Thick as a brick" fits very well in situations like this. I do hope mate that that satisfies your enquiring mind. Chris, Looking very closely at the hull but not scratching any paint off it most certainly is wood, I thought at first that she was Plank on Bulkheads but she isn't. It would appear the hull is made up from preformed panels up to deck level, these panels have been attached to Bulkheads which form the ribs above deck. The deck itself was formed from sheet ply and came in one piece, there were no deck planks on the original kit, the deck was painted the same grey as the hull. I hope that gives you the answer your looking for mate but if you have any other questions please don't hesitate to ask, I'll do my very best to give you an accurate answer with the information I have on this boat but I do warn you it's not much. Grant, With an answer and explanation like that you can my friend hi-jack this log any time you like, so take that coat off and get your backside back in here. :im Not Worthy: Thank you one and all for looking in and your very kind comments and remarks, also everyone who hit the like button. All are very much appreciated. A small verbal up-date, the deck planking is now complete and treenailed, I used a 0.8m drill bit and filled the holes with a Pear past made from Pear sawdust and diluted white glue. I do however have one question which I hope you can answer. Because the planks are not joggled into the Margin planks ( seen on photos) they are cut at an angle and butt upto the Margin plank. Where these planks meet are they also treenailed and if so at what frequency.? The photos do not show this detail. Thanks guys, Be Good mobbsie
  11. I was really pleased to get these little devils out of the way, I cant believe you are disappointed they are completed. You've done a wonderful job on them, well done. Onwards and upwards mate. Be Good mobbsie
  12. Nicely done mate, that's a smart piece of work. I hope all is well since our last chat and that it didn't take too much out of you. Speedy recovery mate. Be Good mobbsie
  13. Hi Guys, Another quick update on some progress, I'm a little cheesed off because I have some other pictures on my phone and for some reason I'm unable to access them. They are mainly of the Margin Planks, so I'm afraid there will be a jump from Margin Plank template to half planking. I have had a bit of bother finding a decent Veneer to use an after a couple of orders on line which proved totally useless I found a supplier about 7 miles up the road. Speaking with Grant yesterday, he asked what veneers they were and I was unable to tell him, embarrassing really. I have since done a search on line and they are Cedar and Maple, I quite like the effect and so I hope you guys also like it. Some Pics Starboard side Margin Plank template Stern Margin Plank Bow Piece Starboard Margin Plank Starboard side planking, sorry about the big jump. Starting the Port side planks Once the planking is completed I will be experimenting with treenail colour and material. So your right up to date now guys, I will post more as progress is made. Be Good mobbsie
  14. Thanks Guys and thanks for all who hit the like button. Geoff, I've not been there yet and seeing as it's only a couple of hours drive away I may give it a go, thanks for the heads up mate. Be Good mobbsie
  15. What they all said Denis, I really cant think of any better superlatives than have been expressed, other than superb. You have every right to be extremely proud of her. Be Good mobbsie
  16. She's looking really sweet Mark. Just one question mate, Ebony is not an easy material to work with, how did you find bending it around the bow.? I like the use of this wood but have only used it once and that was just a straight strip, I do however have to use a bit later in my build. Gonna be fun me thinks. Be Good mobbsie
  17. Just caught up with your log and boy is that engine ever a piece of gear. Wonderful engineering Michael, it's going to look fantastic mounted in the ship and working. Mind if I tag along mate. Be Good mobbsie
  18. Hi Gents, John, There's a ways to go yet mate, seems almost like a new build sometimes. Tim, Welcome aboard mate, it's always nice to get new crew members. Grant, Welcome home mate, a lick of fresh paint always makes a lot of difference. Thanks for the good words guys, appreciate them. Be Good mobbsie
  19. Hi Guys, I've completed stripping down and on inspection I find that all is not well, there are several parts that are slightly out of true and will take a bit of thought when planking. I haven't found out anything new and so have decided on a 4 plank stagger set at 30mm, thank you guys for investing time and effort in helping me out, I really appreciate your help. I have started painting the Bulwarks, Hold, Accommodation Shack and the Hull, I have kept the same colour scheme for the upper works but changed the Hull from the drab grey that was to Red Primer ( Red Lead). I have also added a white line around. The Hold was a sky blue which I could have kept but it was eating away at me and so I've changed it to what could only be described as sage. The dye has been bought for the sails, they will be Terracotta, I borrowed an old pillow case from the Admiral which will make up the sails and my sister, (bless her) is going to make them up for me, I don't think she fully comprehends the amount of work that will be needed so I'm going to have to get her something special for taking them on. So here are the pics guys. Some of the little bits that were on board You may be able to see the crackling effect on the paint High levels of grime is all over the boat I have removed the decking from the hold and will replace with planks The benches around the tiller have been removed I'm masking up the upper hull in readiness for painting The new Hull colour The hold has now been planked The inboard paintwork has been started, white only at this stage. The white line has been added That's it for now guys, there will be more to follow very soon. Be Good mobbsie
  20. Some good progress there mate, she's really looking the part. I've never known Tung Oil to white spot before, you learn something new everyday. I will have to think twice before I use it again. Be Good mobbsie
  21. Beautiful joinery skills displayed there Augie. The mouldings look great and against the black of the capping rail it all looks really smart. Very well done mate. Be Good mobbsie
  22. Words fail me Captn, you deserve all the plaudits heaped upon you. She is a wonderful boat matched by a equally wonderful imagination. Looking forward to the Connie mate. Be Good mobbsie
  23. Hi John, Thanks mate for looking into it for me, I'm afraid there is little either written or photographed about these little boats, they were treated very much like the Thames Barges in that they were built to the eye of the shipwright. They were built in tiny yards to a general design, and weren't designed to go too far off shore, there main quarry was Shrimp but they very often doubled up and caught Sprats or Herring, there are still a few afloat today and they are well spread about the country. I understand what you are saying with regard to the stagger of the planks adding strength to the boat and so will give this some serious thought, I will continue searching tomorrow to see if I can find anything extra but if not I will be staggering the planks, I will most likely do a 3 plank stagger. Thanks again mate, appreciate your help. Be Good mobbsie
  24. Hi Michael, Never seen those Ducks before, you learn something new everyday. You've come this far mate it would be an awful shame not to continue to completion, these boats are very pleasing to the eye and would grace many a home, and you've made a good start on the Keel. You'll have to fit her in somewhere between "Current Builds" and "Other Projects" mate and if I can be of any help along the way you only need to ask. Mind you if your hearts not in it and you cant commit 100% then it's maybe's best left alone, you never know, one day perhaps. Thanks for sharing Michael. Be Good mobbsie
  25. Hi Michael, Thank you so much mate for those pics, they are almost there but unfortunately just don't give the detail I'm looking for, although having said that, the absence of a straight line athwart ships at any point is leading me to believe the planks were staggered but I cant make out any butt patterns. Your going to have to tell me the story of Doris mate, I have looked her up on "u tube" and there is some interesting shots of her, also on Google images. She is still around somewhere and will take a bit of tracking down but if it's of help to you I can find her and take some pictures. Thanks again Michael Be Good mobbsie
