  1. Hello Mikko, and a warm welcome to the forum from 'Down Under'. That looks like a great job you're doing on your model. John
  2. You're quite right, mate - that part of the planking will be covered by a carved badge, so I wasn't too worried about absolute symmetry, I just wanted to put in an idea of the general shape. John
  3. Just catching up, Pat. I agree with Eberhard regarding the heel chock and the cap. As for your ash removal cranes, I would have thought that a derrick arrangement would be overkill and difficult to operate on a rolling ship. Simple gooseneck davits would be portable and easily used - especially considering the large crews of warships - a simple whip over the davit block and a team of men to run it down the deck would soon have the ash up on deck for disposal. Davits wouldn't be too heavy to manhandle as portable iron anchor davits were used in some of the later merchant sailing ships and were set up by the muscle power of their small crews. John
  4. Hello Oddball, and a warm welcome to the forum from 'Down Under'. John
  5. The planking is now on the stern, so I'll be able to start the outside planking shortly, but I think I'll do the mast steps first before I forget them! John
  6. An interesting looking vessel, Kevin. She's coming along really nicely. John

  12. Hello Jeff, and a warm welcome to the forum from 'Down Under'. John
  13. Very neat work on that capping rail, Keith. If you Google 'Anchor Chain Stopper' you'll see triangular gadgets called a 'levered pawl'. Yours could very well be an up-market version of that arrangement. john
  14. She's really starting to look like she has a purpose now, Steve. John
  15. Hello Peter, and a warm welcome to the forum from 'Down Under'. John
  16. That's some serious fishing going on in that image of the boat with the net over the rail! I'm sure your winch will turn out nicely rusted up, Gary. John
  17. Thank you, Carl. I wish the same to you and your family. John
  18. Thanks Keith. it seems funny to be wishing a Happy New Year to people currently living in the cold wet and snow while we're expecting temperatures in the mid forties tomorrow with the fire risk set at catastrophic! John
