OK, you are forgiven. I prefer museums with ships myself Now, considering you are probably delirious but continue to ask for photos, here's the latest: Here, all the component parts have been sanded (220/320/400) until my right arm is double the original size. The pieces have been pre-stained and now begin to look like red oak. The next step will be applying the diluted light oak stain followed by a few coats of poly.

SJORS-- I can't believe that you, who live only a stones' throw from the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam, have never seen his painting Starry Night. What you are probably seeing are more rounded off blocks then those supplied by ME in the kit. That rounding can be done by hand sanding (tedious on blocks smaller then 1/8) or by using a block tumbler. ME actually sells a tumbler. It's just a drum lined with sandpaper. Some folks here design their own. Gjdale has a great tutorial on building one in his Victory log. Chuck also sells blocks on his Syren Company website.

I see your sharp wit is returning Sjors so you must be feeling better. It's tough to keep we Commodores down. I suspect Mobbsie's loss of memory is the result of being tangled in the hammock nettings on his Aggie for an extended period. Yes, paints are expensive. This set has a list price of $74 for 15 bottles! But then, did Van Gogh complain about the price of the paint once he finished 'Starry Night'? Oh wait, he was Dutch, wasn't he ??

Thanks for the complement. I'm very happy with her. But I'll tell you right now, yours will be even nicer. I don't have that 'crispness' yet like you do. After changing my mind 6 times, I'm going with Confederacy. No room around here to display another fully rigged ship at this point and, although the new Essex was very tempting, I'm happy to be staying with the 1:64 scale at this point. Keep up the great work on your lady.

Good to hear from everyone. Yes, matching stained wood can be a 'challenge'. I tell the Admiral it will all look the same in 100 years Thanks for the suggestion Ferit but I'll stick with the wooden corners. I like the framing effect more than the modern look.

You might want to have a look at Blue Ensign's Pegasus log. He's just completed fabricating the masts for his baby and his method can serve as a tutorial...provided you have the required tools. Good luck!

Thanks, Alex. The latest ME sale has them practically giving her away. Plus they are throwing in a 15 bottle set of paints ---- free! Don't know that I'll use most of them but you can't beat the offer. And, if I use Ben's patented 20 coat method, they may work out. Update ----- Staining trials completed and I have the Admiral's approval to go with a 60% Light Oak Minwax stain for the case. It matches the furniture (if one accounts for future aging of the finish, failing eyesight and the phases of the moon).
