Ho, hum. Another life threatening catastrophe goes by the boards. Just kidding. Nice job. Almost anything with wood can be fixed or redone. And we always learn a lesson from our problems.

I'm not worried about you throwing anything. I just don't want to be embarrassed by how well it comes out knowing my carving skills are non-existent!
-
I'm convinced that's the way to go. Chuck had advised, I believe, about 28 feet / plank and that worked out on Syren . As for the carvings, if you and Sjors don't mind, I'll move to the back of the bus. WAY back. Best of luck!

Hey Mark.......single planking takes 1/2 the time . With your skills and attitude I can't believe you'll have any real problems. Looking forward to seeing what the Swiss Pear looks like. I'm thinking of working some into a future build. Don't rush it......no matter who starts clamoring for photos!

Holy smokes !!!! From a timid voice in the woods whispering "My transom doesn't fit" to a booming orator spouting proverbs and wisdoms such as 'Rome wasn't built in a day'! It's amazing how far a little adversity goes in bringing out one's true character. I'm awed.

I use 28 gauge black steel wire. As the others have said, not all that much tension really. -

Good start Sjors. You are allowed to kit bash. However, a full transition to the dark side will require prior approval

Now that's inspirational. You've taken something I wouldn't even consider possible and made it look doable. I'm going to try this the next time around. Hearty thanks for posting the process.

It is with great sadness that I read of the passing of John. My heart goes out to his family in this difficult time.

Thanks for the offer, Wayne. But the spiders are getting un-disciplined with the summer weather spending too much time outdoors on frivolous activities. I may need to put them on bread and water. I hope your move goes well. I envy you moving back to Maine. There is something strangely comforting about having the Atlantic in your front yard. The very best of luck, get that workshop up and running and ........hurry back!!!!!!

Chuck makes and interesting point. It's the kind of thing we all 'know' but never express or really resolve in our heads. Thanks, Chuck.

Congrats on the physical. You must have studied really hard. Now that you're 25 again, you get to look forward to 40 more years of work . Glad to hear you're going to scratch a new piece. Patience and a little paint and we'll all be celebrating soon!!!

Like I said.......it's a family. Complete with Black Sheep and those we hide in the closet (where IS Sjors). Sounds to me like those on board enjoy the party. And frankly, so do I on this log. As Mark said (yeah, he aint bad as a moderator), the builder can set the tone and I respect that on the truly focused, technical logs. No, MSW is not social media. But if one of the friends I've made in the last 2 years mentions something affecting their life (and build) that they want to share with this bunch.....I'm interested and/or concerned. We are people, and our lives effect our builds. Of course I could build faster Thanks to all who chimed in, pro or con.

About the NRG
If you enjoy building ship models that are historically accurate as well as beautiful, then The Nautical Research Guild (NRG) is just right for you.
The Guild is a non-profit educational organization whose mission is to “Advance Ship Modeling Through Research”. We provide support to our members in their efforts to raise the quality of their model ships.
The Nautical Research Guild has published our world-renowned quarterly magazine, The Nautical Research Journal, since 1955. The pages of the Journal are full of articles by accomplished ship modelers who show you how they create those exquisite details on their models, and by maritime historians who show you the correct details to build. The Journal is available in both print and digital editions. Go to the NRG web site (www.thenrg.org) to download a complimentary digital copy of the Journal. The NRG also publishes plan sets, books and compilations of back issues of the Journal and the former Ships in Scale and Model Ship Builder magazines.
