I'm laughing because I'm in the middle of doing the same thing -- edge bending bow rails. But they're not going on 'til next week. Did I mention there are already one or two in the 'scrap box'?

Just wanted to mention, John, that a TV channel called 'Smithsonian' ran a documentary here in the US on the cultured pearl industry in Australia going back to the late 1800's. They showed some clips from the 20's of the pearl luggars and I felt right at home after following your fine log.

WELCOME ABOARD, MaryO. Glad that you've decided to share your voyage with us. You've chosen a good subject to model at this point in your 'career'. I'll be looking forward to the lapstrake construction. By all means, take your time. Wooden shipbuilding is not a race. Work at your own pace ...... and ENJOY!

Dirks log also listed a vinegar/salt mixture that seemed to work quite well. And I've seen some take off the shine with dullcoat. Mine's been coppered for about 2 years now. I didn't do anything special and the color is darkening/ageing naturally. Let's all touch base in 25 years and see how they all turn out.

Very nicely done. Are you going to leave her with the brite finish and wait for it to naturally age or will you be treating the plates at all?

She looks just terrific, Rich. Don't fret the 'almost invisible' stuff. You, and most of us, know it's 'there'. WELL DONE, MATE!

I hadn't realized that about the color schemes.....but it certainly makes good sense. I wonder if the Portuguese did something similar on their cod dories? Thanks for posting that comment. Amazing what you can learn here on MSW.

About the NRG
If you enjoy building ship models that are historically accurate as well as beautiful, then The Nautical Research Guild (NRG) is just right for you.
The Guild is a non-profit educational organization whose mission is to “Advance Ship Modeling Through Research”. We provide support to our members in their efforts to raise the quality of their model ships.
The Nautical Research Guild has published our world-renowned quarterly magazine, The Nautical Research Journal, since 1955. The pages of the Journal are full of articles by accomplished ship modelers who show you how they create those exquisite details on their models, and by maritime historians who show you the correct details to build. The Journal is available in both print and digital editions. Go to the NRG web site (www.thenrg.org) to download a complimentary digital copy of the Journal. The NRG also publishes plan sets, books and compilations of back issues of the Journal and the former Ships in Scale and Model Ship Builder magazines.
