  1. Good on not asking "why"... I've made that deep dive into the Internet some time ago and ended up in many places. Some were not a good place to be.
  2. Beyond amazing work, Gary. As pointed out, this is a relatable world for many of us.
  3. Allan, that's the top timber only. Thanks James. That's basically what I'm doing.
  4. Yep, I had the building maintenance guy run his humidity meter for a bit. Foggy outside, inside it's dry as a bone. Picked up a humidifier and have it running. I'll re-fill the cracks, sand and go for the paint again in the morning.
  5. Well.... I made a dog's breakfast of painting. Call it lack of experience as I haven't spray painted in decades. Need to sand and fill some spots. What looked ok yesterday showed that the low humidity here is creating a few problems. I'll sand, re-paint, and see what happens. I'm not upset, just focused on learning more and mistakes are part of learning or re-learning.
  6. I both amazing and a feast for the eyes the amount of detail you're packing into this model.
  7. Looks good. I like the idea of the tiller ropes as you are doing them. Yes, artistic license but how many folks would know the difference?
  8. I'd use one of those cloth sewing tape measures and not a metal or plastic one. The cloth will follow the hull shape better.
  9. Excellent display of wisdom, Chris. Sometimes knowing when to stop is best solution at the time.
  10. Thanks Bug, and BE. Looks like tomorrow is masking and start painting day.
  11. Question for the group and maybe I should have asked this in the painting area..... I did make a decision that I'm not going to paint the keel, stem, or stern so as not to hide the nice details Chris etched into the bow and rudder units. And yes, I'll be doing black from the black strake to the waterline and white from the waterline down. The hull is well sanded, filled some cracks that showed up (lack of humidity?). So, my question is, should I put some varnish or clear coat first to the wood before painting? At the local hobby shop, I got mixed messages.... some say over the final color only, others say do both. I'm using acrylic paints, both spray (for the white) and brush for everything else. I have the brush on varnish from Vellejo and Tamaya flat clear spray. Opinions and thoughts are welcome as I haven't painted my wooden ships in the past... this is a first.
  12. Those illuminated panels will really pop when installed. Just curious here.... should then be red? Or did the subs have dual colors for night and day use?
  13. I'm not sure, Allan by what dimension you're looking for.
  14. Looks great, Christian. I like it that the nails for the copper aren't visible.
  15. Tom, open a build log for this in the appropriate area. You'll get more "eyes" on it there. This area is just for introductions.
  16. Where did you find it?
  17. This is a total bummer. I hope there's a solution somewhere even it's using a re-seller.
  18. Well, for now, I'm going with them I think. I do have a lot of filling, sanding, and painting coming up but that's a project I'll start tomorrow after the meds wear off from today's medical procedure. AD, Thanks for the observations. I think it's the angle of the photo. I'll flip the hull over tomorrow and put in it's proper position. The cobbled together upside down mount isn't the best setup. I do note that my "roof" on the quarter panels is a bit thicker at the stern than at the forward but everything else is pretty much determined by the slots in the hull lining and the pre-cut/pre-marked wood and matches the photos. I'll take a another look for those "tags". I thought I removed them all.
  19. Looks you nailed that beam and all it's curves, etc. Well done, sir.
  20. Looks wonderful from here. As for dealing with bits and pieces and needing them fitted to check everything, there's two ways for this. One is a few drops of something like Elmer's Glue All (a white general purpose glue) or rubber cement. Once checked, the glues can be removed. Alcohol for the white glue . Rubber cement can be rubbed off. Use either but very sparingly for test purposes. As always, test on scrap before committing to use on a build.
