The isolators (insulators actually) while did help a bit as you point out, there basic purpose was to insulate the antenna (the cables) from shorting to the ship. They do the same thing on aircraft. And if you look at high tension (voltage) power lines on land, they have them also.

Don't open two logs for the same build. Just add to this one like the rest of us. It keeps everything in place and given the size that MSW has grown to, it also keeps things from getting lost. However, if you have questions about any part of building and don't get an answer in your log, then open a topic in the appropriate area.

48th Scale imperial rulers. Where?
mtaylor replied to John Murray's topic in Modeling tools and Workshop Equipment
Here's a PDF file of rulers in various scales and are not metric. I print, verify that it matches a standard ruler and then cut out the one I want and glue it to a slab of wood. After rechecking that there's deformation, I trim the now wooden ruler to size. ImperialScales.pdf -

A guide to using MSW
mtaylor replied to James H's topic in How to use the MSW forum - **NO MODELING CONTENT**
Clear all the browsers. Also, check the "history" on each one and remove MSW from there. Each browser is different so you'll need to "settings" on each one. Chrome does has "reset" which seems to do the same thing. -
Not an uncommon thing about the "potential" captains. Seems to still be going on with all navies with politics and "friendship" counting more than experience. This is most notable at the admiral's level. Same for other branches of military service.

Grumbling and facepalming are part of the process, Bruce. Looks like you're on the right path.

I have a suspicion that the gaff rigs were insurance such that if the engines failed, they could still have some steerage control by taking over fairly quickly. But then, the transition period between pure sail and pure power is something I know little of.

William Sutherland's concept of ship hull design, 1711
mtaylor replied to Waldemar's topic in Nautical/Naval History
Just curious if this was an actual build plan or a proposed design and used to get support for the project? -
Looking very good and the pictures make it seem a lot larger than it is. As "other things getting in the way"... that's life.

Timber-framed outdoor kitchen - Cathead - 1:1 scale
mtaylor replied to Cathead's topic in Non-ship/categorised builds
Looks good. Have a great week of trips and relaxation. All of you working on this deserve it. -
Welcome back home, Brunel.

Have a look here: Basically the same as a kit to open a log. The only difference is area and some details in the title. Use Cathead's topic title as an example. For refreshers... there's pinned topics here: https://modelshipworld.com/forum/47-how-to-use-the-msw-forum-no-modeling-content /

I believe you are right about the anchor "sloop". Worked like what everyone else did for landing craft... drop the anchor on the run in and they use it winch of the beach.

I can see a lot of shaping of the hull as the stern area isn't rounded but made with a series of straight cuts. As for the "huh?" piece.... that is weird unless it's supposed to go on the bottom of the hull. But then cuts in the two pieces don't match. Send Mr. Bluejacket a PM to have a look here on your log and advise.

About the NRG
If you enjoy building ship models that are historically accurate as well as beautiful, then The Nautical Research Guild (NRG) is just right for you.
The Guild is a non-profit educational organization whose mission is to “Advance Ship Modeling Through Research”. We provide support to our members in their efforts to raise the quality of their model ships.
The Nautical Research Guild has published our world-renowned quarterly magazine, The Nautical Research Journal, since 1955. The pages of the Journal are full of articles by accomplished ship modelers who show you how they create those exquisite details on their models, and by maritime historians who show you the correct details to build. The Journal is available in both print and digital editions. Go to the NRG web site (www.thenrg.org) to download a complimentary digital copy of the Journal. The NRG also publishes plan sets, books and compilations of back issues of the Journal and the former Ships in Scale and Model Ship Builder magazines.
