I think your rudder will work.  Possibly use horns on the rudder post and wire/line to the servo?  As an aside, I'm not sure why you redesigned it.

When you take a look a the "Babyface Nelson", you`ll see the rudder, just scroll down the site

As this boat is a copy from the Bootlegger, I want to have the rudder as close as ever possible to the original thing. So I have to redraw it to this, even if it makes work a bit harder. It`s not done with only redesing the keel plate, but also the rear frame (frame "I" in the plans)must be redisigned.

You/I don't want to imagine model building without the internet. How do you get all the information? By mail!?!? I'm still waiting for a parcel from Florida by USPS, it's been on the move since beginning of May (2016). It will be a long build, besides how can we follow it, and if we could, the correspondence will be rather pricey ... pictures , copies, envelopes, stamps, drawings.

I even wonder if I couldn't have given Gerhard the links for the rudder what he would have done. Besides I couldn't possibly have known of his build... And as for MSW, maybe locally something ... but not this wonderful divers international site ...

I, as so many, or even the most of us, started modelbuilding so long ago, there was no internet or so many other open recources. It did work. But in this "Modern Times"  we have it, and this opens so many ways to connect with others, and gives way for new methods of constructing and building.

The 3D-Programme I use is IMSI 3D-CAD, easy to use programme, just because I am too lazy to learn other systems

I`m just doing what you do with the Licorne. But yours is at a far higher level....................

 

Today I found some time to cut the keel plate, the inner contour shows the changes to the form from the plan sheets. I`m thinking about, how to make the cutouts for the prop shaft, I need that exactly where it is located at the plans, when I drill that after planking I will fail too much.There must be a way to get this part set correct before planking! We`ll see...........

Also, I think your idea to start with electric power is a good one.  Considering the level of detail on this build...a fuel system might not be the most user friendly ship mate

Glad to see you on board, thanks for coming in!

Not only the "user friendly" handling but that there is almost no place to drive the boat is a reason for the electric drive. And the motor is easy to get, while a V8 petrol engine has much more of weight, and would take me a lot of time to build. I do have the Whittle V8 plans, but would need a good milling machine before I could build this beautiful and powerful engine. So I will stay with electric for the Baby, and stay focussed on the details of her.

They made so many classy boats then, seems to be the 1950ies, before and up was a good time for boatbuilders. By searching for more stuff about the Baby I found so many others, too much to list them!

I think about something like reinforce plates on both sides of the keel, so the steve pipe will have more hold and stays in correct position while I`m setting and fixing it in. I must first take a look, what diameter of pipe I will use for that, and then make the plates. I will have to act similar at the rudder axle liner, this will be turned at the lathe.

After a little break, I continued with the keel plate. The groove for the steve tube was cut with a small cutting disc, and then the parts stabilized with 4 x 5mm oak wood strips. Everything fits well to the plans, so I can go on with the cuting for the rudder axle socket.

Tested to the plans, fits well.

The last days were filled up with "family affairs", so I had not too much time for the baby......

The cutout for the rudder axle socket is made, this was not so complicated as the long slash for the prop shaft.

then turned around, cut the part full away, glue the second reinforce plate to the keel, and the cutout for the socket is there..

 

Next things to do will be sawing the frames, and build the frame and keel section.

I hope to be prepared for next things to do. Today I had some time to cut the frames from 4 mm plywood (boxwood), this is really hard to cut, tomorrow the frames will be cut to shape with the jewellers saw. Dont know how long this will take, but it`s not a race to the finished boat yet .

Back from vacations, thank you all for your kind likes & comments!

 

This week since I`m back at work for the Baby, I completed the framework and made the hull planking at bottom and sides. Now that I`ve had some "timeout" from everything working on the models is a lot easier to do. Things went fast, so I can start next week with the deck planking.

Today I started with the preworks for the deck planking. First to do was to set the drilling for the steve tube, I could cut that through the basa wood with a simple piece of 7 mm brass tube. Then I started to remove the remains from the frames stands, when all are sawed off i can start with the last  balsa planks.

 

The hole for the steve tube is done, tube will be epoxyd in when the mahogany planks are done.

Took a week to get to that point, this days now are a bit too hot for me for working. Around 30deg. C. is too much for making boats, better to take a break in the spa ..................

Just doing little things in the evenings, preparing for the next steps, cutting 3 x 3 mm planks from balsa wood. Not much to report at the time, but more to come soon!

Back again after Motorbike charsh and following unexpected kenn surgery and long  "not Amy Winehouse style" rehab I`m ready to go on again. Sorry for let you all waiting so long, new things will come soon. While my rehab I`ve searched for a new driving concept for the Bootlegger and other motor driven boats, maybe I`m coming up with a novelty in that case....

I`m really well now after all that pain, but thats over. The new system will be an electric one, but different to everything I`ve seen in a boat. A few more research is still to make, then I will be able to show up with what I mean. It will take some more time to realize it, but I`m sure this can work.

To be serious, I would like to ride again, but will take some time off from that. Over the wintertime it`s much too cold, maybe next year again. But I must watch out for a not too expensuve bike, maybe a (used) sportster could be the next one.

 

Back to the Baby and it`s new concept of driving. I want to drive the boat with a small V8 solenoid engine, this motors have the best sound of electric engines, but I must figure out,what torque I can get out of such an engine. So there will be a lot of research to make, beneath my other projects!

It's wonderful that you're back.  I had to go Google the V8 solenoid engine.  One impressive bit of hardware.  I take it that these are all basically scratch-built?  I noticed that they're producing some of the parts using a 3D printer.
