Le Mirage by Sjors - FINISHED - Corel - Wood - 1:75

Recommended Posts

Thanks Wayne,

Yep, go to the larboard side  :D

@ Thanks Garward,

I know exactly what you mean.

But the canons are in the way for that.

And I can not cut the metal part under the plate to short them.

There is no way to place them then.

And at the drawing it's the same.

They also goes on an angle…...

What to you prevents to truncate these parts and to establish them correctly? Or, for example, a few to displace shroud plate and shroud.

Best regards,

Garward

Garward,

Are you meaning the shrouds that go from the mast to the deadeye's?

It has to go with the mast?

animaatjes-sjors-94584.gif

It means that shroud plate  have to be shroud continuation, and at you go under different corners to shroud.

Wow.. pictures.  It's real.. it's alive!!!!!!!!!

Sjors,

Garward is asking about the chainplates.  I suspect that instructions show it the way you did it.  Garward is pointing out the way they were done.  Seems sometimes those pesky gunports get in the way.  ;)

Garward,

Thank you for your comment.

I know that it is not the way as it should be.

There are more things that are not accurate on The Mirage.

Maybe that's why the the ship is named Le Mirage or Fantom.

I'm not going to change the chainplate.

If I remove it, I will damage more then I want.

And besides, the ropes will then run in front of the canons.

The drawings from Corel are terrible.  No measurements at all.

You have to look very carefully where everything has to go, by looking how it should be done according to that particular picture.

My ship is not a museum piece but a hobby!

For me, she doesn't have to be historically accurate, because may she didn't even exists.

I'll just do it the way I think is right according to the pictures in the plans.

And I like it how she looks at the moment.

Again, thanks for your comment but I will leave it this way.

looks like the upper tier cannons would be in the way if you tried to straighten them out.  either way,  you'd have a tough go with it.  your decision to keep it that way is a nobel one.   nice work Sjors.  :)

Hi Sjors. I really must find more time to follow these posts.

The Mirage is truly wonderful and the build quality superb. One day I would really like to build a sailing ship of a good size. The Thermopylae was really nice but the small scale made it a very tricky build. As I have said I would like to do the Victory but there are so many other beautiful kits out there.

Sjors, personally I think YOUR ship looks beautiful. I think you are like me...you are not building a historically accurate museum piece, but rather a ship that stirred you in some way, and will look beautiful in yours and others' eyes because of the care and love, blood, sweat and tears that went into building her. And in my mind, each ship is a chance to learn, and hone skills that keep YOU interested in the hobby and what you are doing.

IMO, I think the only way to achieve 100% accuracy is to build a ship in full scale!!! Seems as soon as something gets scaled down, it causes problems in placement of things. Kits are what kits are, and as modelers we can only work within the limits of the mismatched "scale" parts.

Your position is well stated Sjors.  There are decisions to be made on each and every build and they need to be made in your heart as well as your head.  I believe each of us knows the strong and weak points of our current project and there is not one of us not trying to improve and do our absolute best given not only our own limitations but also those imposed by the materials we have to work with.

Carry on my friend.

Isn't it sad how kit companies put us in the dilema of correct chain plate with shouds blocking cannons or cannons unblocked but shrouds incorrectly chained. I didn't even understand all this (even with a strong background in physics) until Andy drew a picture in someone log about a week ago.

Sjors, I love your attitude about the whole thing, Rules are an illusion and this is a hobby. Life goes better with Smiles and Popcorn. I think the chainplate/channels/shouds look fine and if ever asked by someone that knows, you can just say "Ha, you found my test".

Oh are the shrouds staying light, or ar you going to dye them darker? I like the deadeye spacing, I read somewhere that they are typically around 5 deadeye widths apart and most kits I've seen are closer then that. Yours have about that spacing, don't know if it was by kit instructions but it looks good.

And finally a question for Sjors and all those building these Huge multi-gunned Beauties. I've notiuced that most everyone rigs the gunoport doors before the standing and running rigging. My question is maybe more of a comment, How do you rig without rubbing all the gunports off. With my clumsy arms I'd have gunports and rigging knocked off as I rigged. Is there a trick to keeping your arm clear or is it just one of those "watch where your at every second" kind of things.

@ Frank ,

Are you really mean that this is the fun part????

I have to do it , otherwise I just let it…..

The rope from Morope looks good.

I'm not working with it because it is for Mobbsie

@ Aldo,

Thank you  :)

Keith,

The shrouds are staying the colour that they have,

All the rope is the same colour and I don't do a thing with it….

When I'm working on the masts or rigging, I can put my gun lids up.

No problem with my arms…...

When I'm finished I put them down again.

Question answerd?

Thanks Jeff,

For a lot of members the rigging is the fun part.

For me it means that is is almost the finishing of an other build  :D

Finally you can see the end result of a lot of blood, sweat and tears…...

I've ordered a few gnomes to do the ratlines for me  :P

I've not see them yet so maybe they are with an other builder at the moment.

Keith,

I can closed the lids, but normally they are open.

I give you a wrong answer….. :(

I' not closed them but put them upwards…….so they are against the hull.

I hope this make more sense?

Sorry Mick that I missed your post  :(

Take your time to follow the log.

I don't go anywhere and also the log stays where it is.

You want to build a sailing ship of a good size….you mean a big one like Le Mirage or San Ildefonso or maybe the Aggy?

What is  stopping  you….

So take the step, buy a nice kit and get building and have fun with it …...

When you are at the stage of the ratlines, I'll send you the gnomes  :D  :D  :D  :D

The shrouds at the port side are also in place.

I know that the deadeyes  are not in 1 line but they are so tiny…..

I have search on the floor for 6 times and I find them all  :D

I used a jig but still they are …..out of line…..

I promise you that i shall do it better with the main mast!

And Keith?

When you look at the lids, some of them are to the hull.

Now I can place them back again.
