Hello i'm new here and to ship building

Recommended Posts

Hello everyone

i am new here and just started my first build a week or so ago I am doing a 18th century longboat I got from  Model ship ways I wanted something small to see if  I truly was going to enjoy it . So far I have found it very relaxing, it takes my mind away from work once I'm home . Once I finish this one I would like to slowly progress to something a little harder and detailed I would love some suggestions. If I can figure it out I will post my progress as I go so I can get some expert feedback and criticism. Thanks

Hello Slideways and welcome aboard,

Can you please tell us your real name?

Nice work. You've  made a good start on your longboats.

This is a great place to learn and share tips and techniques. Feel free to start a buildlog.

If needed, you'll find plenty of advise, help and encouragement from everyone.

There are a lot people here who are willing to help and advise, so I will pass the advise for a more difficult and detailed build on to the more experienced builders.

I wish you smooth sailing with our gallant crew.

Regards,

Anja

Hi Derek,

Welcome to MSW.

Take a look at this BUILD LOG - it's Chuck Passarao's Prototype of the Kit you are building. You'll find a lot of useful information and pictures in there.

There aren't but two options: do it FAST, or do it RIGHT.

Current Project Build Log: Soleil Royal in 1/72. Kit by Artesania Latina.

Last finished projectsRoyal Ship Vasa 1628; French Vessel Royal Louis 1780. 1/90 Scale by Mamoli. 120 Cannons

Future projects already in my stash: Panart: San Felipe 1/75; OcCre: Santísima Trinidad 1/90;

Wish List: 1/64 Amati Victory, HMS Enterprise in 1/48 by CAF models.

So much to build, so little time!

Derek,

Welcome aboard!  For what it's worth, I have been modeling for many years and I found the longboat quite challenging.  Its simplicity is quite deceiving.  Since you are working single layer planking that can be seen from both sides, your planking job must be PERFECT.  Good luck and happy modeling!!

Welcome Derek. You'll find this is a great place to learn about ship building with a very supportive community always willing to help out. Good luck with the build. For your second build, I'd recommend something that is double planked - which is a lot more forgiving than a single-plank project.

Under construction: Mamoli Roter Lowe

Completed builds: Constructo Enterprise, AL Le Renard

Up next: Panart Lynx, MS Harriet Lane

In need of attention: 14-foot Pintail in the driveway
