Germania Nova 1911 by KeithAug - FINISHED - Scale 1:36 - replica of schooner Germania 1908

Recommended Posts

Eberhard, I can remember what it looked like and I am pretty sure that it wasn't made by Rolls Royce. I don't remember the make but I did try t look up the training centre on the web to see if i could find out what happened to it. Unfortunately I drew a blank. I do intend trying again.

Thank you all for your comments and likes.

I am moving on by going back to the masts, booms and spars which were only partially completed earlier. They have all sorts of fitting and attachments which need to be made and installed before I get on to the sails.

I am starting with the main boom. You can see in the following photographs the blocks and strops.

Do health and safety at work regulations apply to yachts?

992320476_Screenshot2021-03-12at21_49_51.thumb.png.ae097d881881642e54044ffea1694efa.png

The rudimentary plans downloaded from the internet adequately define the attachment points

DSC01339.thumb.JPG.f5b340a8c0031d029be3a582c65f6393.JPGThese were marked on to the boom (on top of a piece of masking tape.

DSC01337.thumb.JPG.db0b6760221c4187e91bad9aced212f1.JPGThe blocks attach to the strops via brackets. These were probably forged from plate on the original. They are a bit small at model scale and so I decided to fabricate them.

I started with 2 squares of brass sheet drilled with a central hole and 2 other smaller holes.

DSC01889.thumb.JPG.885d6883fe46b68edc5941affa8b5e15.JPG

The squares were turned circular. and a spacer was made.

DSC01893.thumb.JPG.35ea6ad1fa507f8db2f567bbaf9a20ff.JPG

The 3 parts were assembles and soldered on an aluminium alignment mandrel.

DSC01896.thumb.JPG.178549fa55f6f8d7310c61ef39c40a68.JPGI then made a filing button and used this to profile the outer shape.

DSC01899.thumb.JPG.9d2bb2865c3f086b4db78ec07229ccbb.JPG

Two brackets were then cut from the profiled shape.

DSC01901.thumb.JPG.d5220d4f158ad4008cf59676d588a7a9.JPG

The wire strops were then made from beading wire.

DSC01902.thumb.JPG.281e5232d0bfb7560402d2bc4e4e95e5.JPG

I spent a lot of time making blocks in 3 sizes and with single double and triple sheaves.

DSC01930.thumb.JPG.c4a07b5f2d6e99a72f03c18bf30b7e66.JPGSingle blocks were attached to the strops via the brackets.

DSC01908.thumb.JPG.bc12d79f3b311249934792b7c88d3241.JPG

Two further single blocks were attached.

DSC01910.thumb.JPG.034327f72d85ec58884ebc2ed32bdadf.JPGI am not sure what the purpose is of the long strops running fore and aft are, but these were added.

DSC01913.thumb.JPG.8d6b9d7bc78cb4fa63f3a1cd1e21d2c5.JPG

Much more to do.

Just catching up Keith and you have been busy.  Beautiful work as always - every bit of it.  That photo of the cabin is really cool.  It has a nostalgic feel to it, especially with the out of focus foreground.  That’s a keeper.

The fore and aft lines may be foot ropes.

How were the wire strops covered to protect the wood work, bit hard to make out from the pics

Ah RR-apprentice at work - love this filing-button work, that shows the toolmaking approach.

I could think of two uses for these strops at the end of the boom: either they are some sort of footropes (well HSE rules apply, when you have a professional crew, but it may depend on the country of registration) or they are sort of bridles to grab and help the boom shift, when going through the wind.

Hello Steve

They have a very closely fitted leather covering.

It is a bit too closely fitted for me to reproduce neatly.

Eberhard / Steve. I think the foot rope idea seems sensible. Given the mass and height of the boom I think that flicking it across would be better managed via the sheets and winches.

Amazing work as always Kieth. I’m still baffled at how you can keep hold of such tiny parts. You must have sticky hands, or is there something you’re not telling us. Personally, if I were working on pieces that small, the floor gods would be rich from all the parts I would have sacrificed.😁

Brian - Eberhard is probably the expert. Watchmakers have a cloth on the bench that attaches to a chord around their neck. I just trust to luck and make a few spares. Thank you for your kind remarks.

Today I had a big productive workshop plan. Then this arrived and insisted on helping.

DSC02235.thumb.JPG.9cf868bf175c3b106dc9786504274271.JPG

She said that she needed to do her work so we did a bit of nailing practice (see hammer and wood block). Then we learned masking taping before progressing on to drawing boats. I have high hopes that she is destined to become a ship modeller. Needless to say I didn't get much done.

Keith, I had assumed a snug leather covering on the strops and of course that's impossible to recreate at this scale, have you considered just painting them in a suitable colour? A few heavy coats would pass for leather to a blind man on a galloping horse.

Keith, can you get heat shrink of this small a diameter (and right colour)?  Might make life a little easier for simulating the wire coverings.

Watchmakers and jewellers indeed use aprons. Watchmakers generally use cloth, while those of jewellers are made from leather. The latter clip to the underside of their workbenches, so that they can recover precious metal filings. It also protects them when silver-soldering.

I have been wearing aprons in the workshop for decades. However, I found that small pieces mostly either bounce off, or just drop besides ...

Well remembered Keith, indeed it is, although she hasn't been called Splodge for a while now. At nursery school they all use her given name of Eve but in the family she answers to Bean. I think "Bean" will stick with her forever.

Her mum brought her to the workshop to show her Germania. I pointed out the picture of Maisie (the Dalmatian) in the porthole and I removed the deck house to show her the picture of Bean. She then rushed back to the lounge and reappeared with Nanny to show her the pictures. It was after this that she decided to stay and do her work.

Steve I will do a test piece. My guess is that acrylics will flake and enamels will form beads. The wire is covered with clear plastic (which looks and feels a bit like nylon) and i am dubious about the adhesion.

18 hours ago, BANYAN said:

Pat - Yes you can get small bore heat shrink. The wire is .020" diameter and the problem is that small bore heat shrink seems to have a reasonable wall thickness. It more than doubles the diameter of the strops and this makes them look unnaturally heavy.

Thank you Eberhard for the apron explanation.

Thank you all for the nice Bean comments - unfortunately she is not for sale.

The clear plastic on the wire is a problem.  I'm not sure if there's a chemical way to remove and burning it off would be nasty.

Mark - it burns off quite nicely. You set fire to one end and then it burns almost like a fuse. It does create a molten blob so the trick is to blow out the flame and then quickly draw the wire between the thumb and fore finger to remove the blob. Then you utter an expletive and remember next time to wear your gloves. The problem is the burning discolours the wire strands in a way that isn't easily rectified. Really you need the wire to retain its shiny stainless steel look.
