Now to tone and highlight, using AK Kriegsmarine filter. 8CEBB40B-2F78-43C8-A1D7-4F96ACF695FE.thumb.jpeg.4226aab989787b92ce7584388820819a.jpeg

This stuff is incredibly strong so it needs a lot of diluting but it works well bringing out highlights. If you use it strait out of the bottle it splotches.

I intend to do some pin washes next then some dry brushing to bring out the panels and ringols. 32D747DD-6AC7-4D00-955E-6D2DD2A9861E.thumb.jpeg.342782085c7a3ac1eb3b6f171109aaa1.jpeg

Grunging part 2, streaking grime from every porthole and edge, I used salt from the portholes painted navy. Rust is next

Do you really need rust on such ship? It did not see much service..... But again, I know you are doing a representation in a different time line (what if...?)

I want to rust it. It’s fun.  And if I don’t, Cog will pick on me.

I get it and I understand the fun of turning a model into  a beat-up ship. Please, document your process and tell us how you do it and what products you use. I want to rust my submarine too, as you suggested in a very early post.

Thanks in advance.

Basically look at photos of real ships to look for rust points, and see how it flows down the hull. As the side of this hull is so large I can’t imagine upkeep at sea would be easy.

Pretty much a process of sponging on some black or using a brush , then dark rust then light rust.

Greg, I hope you do not mind me posting these pictures here, but the Italian Artist Perinotto just published the Tome 4 of his drawings with two very interesting drawings:

Notice the carriage/cart holding the Me-109, and used as a catapult on the deck of the Graf Zeppelin. Very advanced technology.

Pardon me if this particular topic got discussed earlier, but it's kind of interesting to speculate about how effective GZ would have been in actual combat. The Americans and British had practiced carrier operations and tactics for many years before the start of the war, and even so they went through teething troubles after the shooting started. Even if the DKM had enough escort vessels to provide an effective screening force (they didn't), I doubt that GZ would have posed much of a threat, just as Bismarck and Tirpitz ultimately posed little strategic threat.

Maybe not a strategic threat, but it would have been something which would have to be taken into acount, very seriously. As Bismarck and Tirpitz did cost resources which could not have been deployed elsewhere, so would Graff Zeppelin, maybe even more since it would potentially bring airplanes in range of allied targets which hitherto were not

Great weathering job. Was she really that beat up? The B-24s must have gone after the paint factories while hitting the oil refineries.

Thanks for sharing your methods and techniques.

Yves, when I get to the top of the boat I’ll get to the Cats etc as I’ve been saving up some images too, but thank you.

Mr Coyle, my posit was no Russia and No USA in this scenario. I understand that the Nazi’s could never have won since they kicked off Barbarossa. The impact on Enigma’s loss  on the Uboat war was devastating on Germany.

I framed the scenario in such a way they could have an impact and it’s the only viable usage of them. The WW2 photos of convoys of aircraft carriers really do show what the outcome could only be. If the Soviets did not stop at Berlin........

Harley, apparently enamel for paint was in short supply and a big tall ship like would be near impossible to paint at sea.
