Bollards:

Chuck, thank you for including extras of the bollard blanks - I used all of them to come up with a passable pair.  I wasted the first three by trying to use sandpaper over a rounded edge to carve out the larger grooves.  Then I figured out that I should try to make them more squared using jeweler’s files.  That worked much better.   I like Rusty’s idea of not gluing them onto the model until I have to.  I’d hate to break them after all the work it took to make them.

edit:  I noticed after posting my pictures that the bollards were sitting high compared to Chuck’s. So I took some measurements and lowered them to the right location.

I’ve made some progress on the wales and painted the gun ports on the starboard side.  I used masking tape because I’ve never been sorry for doing so and can’t say the same for the converse.  I used Testors acrylic Caboose Red paint and did it with a brush.

I’ve been working on the upper planking on the starboard side.  I’ve had to back up and fix this a couple of times.  It’s not perfect by any means, but I think it will look fine with the frieze over it.  I just discovered that I did not fair the stern quite enough.  I’ve tried just sanding it down, but I’m not sure it’s enough.  Luckily, I haven’t gotten up that high on the port side, so I still have time to fair it more before planking.  If I understand the rest of the construction, the difference will be completely hidden.

Thank you, Mark and Edward.  And thanks for the likes.  I’m trying to carve out about 1/16” at the transom to allow the planks to tuck in enough to clear the window opening.  I think it will work.  I’ll have pictures over the weekend.

I made more space for the window by carving out about 1/16” between the planks and the stern frame.  It’s a little curvier than it should be, but I don’t think that will show.

That will work kind of.  But just be prepared to do some extreme shaping when you start building those qgalleries.  If at all possible you should try and straighten it Just just a bit more.  Less curvy.  But you can make it work if you dont.

I’ve been busier with work doing it from home than I usually am when I go to the office.  I’ve caught the port side up with the starboard.  I also completed the first two rows of planking below the wales.  Next, I’ve got some sanding to do and a coat of wipe-on polyurethane.

Thanks, Mark, Chuck, and Rusty.  One thing I didn't really share with the group is that planking above the wales was really a bear for me.  I pealed off and redid about half the planks for various fit and finish problems.  At one point, I got a full row above a problem and had to scrape off both, wondering all along what kind if idiot would do such a thing.  So for anyone else that finds that part a struggle: You are not alone!  I'm back to feeling pretty good about my chances of success on this project.

Its all a learning process.  If you can get through planking this hull I am sure your next project will be even better.

It has been slow going on my Winnie lately.  I’ve completed the wales and the black strake, port and starboard.  I was concerned that the wipe on poly would smear the acrylic paint onto the black strake.  So I put a coat on the wales before adding the black strake.  That may have been unnecessary, but I figured better safe than sorry.

I’ve just completed the first band of planking on the starboard side.  It’s not perfect, but I’m pretty happy with it.  The edge bending went a lot easier than I expected.  I did break the first plank twice before I got one bent without breaking.  Once the bend is set, the plank lays flat on the bulkheads so easily.

I’ve finished planking the starboard side.  This is the second hull I've planked and my first attempt at single planking.  So I’m pretty happy with it.  That said, there are several mistakes that will be obvious to this group.  I had to take off and redo several pieces in the first belt near the stern because I had not faired bulkheads 27 and 28 enough.  The bend at that spot kept getting worse the closer I got to the stern post.  I have given thought to shelving the project, but I can’t do it.  I really want to finish it.  I the worst case, I’ll feel compelled to build another copy down the road.

Thanks, Edward.  I hope things are getting better for you wrt the pandemic.  Thanks also for the likes.

The more I look at it, the happier I am with the starboard planking.  I think I was only seeing the flaws at first. But picturing more progress in my mind, I think it will come out pretty nice.

It was a big day for me today.  I finished planking the port side.  It came out quite a bit better than the starboard, but I had a lot more experience to work with.  It’s not devoid of errors, but I’m pretty happy with it.  Here are some photos including before and after WOP.  I took the dead on bow and stern photos and you can see that they don’t match up very well.  That’s something I’ll try to do better on subsequent models.

I’m now firmly into chapter 3.  My upper counter planking went reasonably well, but I’m glad it will be covered up.  I chose to leave the window frames natural instead of painting them like some have done.  I bought some Testors Grimy Black for the window covers, but I thought it was too light.  So I mixed it 50/50 with flat black.  I thought that was still too light, until I put it together.  Now I think I probably could have gone with the Grimy Black alone.  My cap covers came out pretty good except for two that split just a little near the uprights.  I haven’t decided whether or not to try to replace them.  And lastly, the stern ports are a little out of round, but I’m not done with them.
