North American P-51D Mustang by Asat - Airfix - 1/48

Yeah, I’ve been looking into them, I have been comparing the king tigers with full interior, some with zimmeret, some without, Henschel and Porsche turrets, etc.  the only thing I can guess is that the kits that are $20 more seem to have individual track links - would that be it? I am really preferring the kits with the link and length jigs that seem to have a suffix letter S after the number - Tak 2045S for example.... hard to get definitive info though....

I have the TAK02045 kit and I can tell you that its an impressive kit.

Lou, if you are going to be bending ladder stiles and other long, thin brass pieces a "Hold and Fold" (https://thesmallshop.com/products/sms002-the-bug-hold-fold)or similar will be handy. For most of what goes into aircraft and armor, the pliers should be adequate. I have one , but the ladder stiles on an HO boxcar should be straight (well, most of the time) and this tool in handy to work with.

I have the grab handle tool from Mission Models.....I did have a hold n fold,  but I traded it away.  to add to your question earlier,  $20.00 and up.........the more you pay,  the more it's worth.  cheaper kits don't have a lot of detail that isn't molded to the parts........basically,  they are easier to build.  the higher priced kits have more detail......the parts count is much higher,  and are more complex.   cheaper kit are more apt to be inaccurate.

I haven't paid much attention to it,  but there are quite a few model manufacturers that I've never heard of.........stuck in my rut I suppose.  it does pose the question concerning the viability of the hobby.  at the time,  I didn't see the hobby as a dying star.......and I still don't today.

cockpit looks good.......love the wear marks on the floor :)

Thanks guys for all the tips, and the discussion... I think I’ll get the Tamiya pliers, and go from there, found a couple Tigers online too, haven’t pulled the trigger yet.....

Worked on the Mustang though, got the cockpit installed and joined the fuse..... Man! A lot like the P-40 - this kit goes together nice, gotta primer it but I’m thinking it may not need any filler....!!

That's a beauty, Lou. Airfix kits have come a long way in recent years.

I agree! The plastic is a bit soft but I like it, not a lot of work to smooth stuff out - but I have learned to let the glue dry completely before working on the panel lines involved...

Nice Mustang, Lou. Minimum filler is nice. Less loss of some of the inset and scribed details. 👍

Yes, Airfix had a reboot some years back and their products are much improved.

Coming along very nicely. Seems to be a whole lot of plastic lurking on MSW. 😊
