The diorama looks most excellent, Jack.  Everything just fits together with nothing seeming out of place.

Came out really nice Jack.

You constantly amaze me with how fast you can throw a diorama together and make it looks so good. It took me months just to envision what I want to do with my Huey when it gets built and I have no idea at all if I can even carry it off. To me the building of a diorama takes an artist while at the level I am, building a model is mostly just mechanical skill. It is clear that you are an artist.

Well guys, I am going to declare these two Sherman builds with their respective dioramas complete. Thanks everyone for following along, your Likes, comments, critiques, suggestions and all, were greatly appreciated.

I am not sure what I will do next, might decide to do some woodcarving instead of model building. I haven't done any carving in a couple of years now, might be time to resume. At least I can sit outside and make shavings instead of being hole up in the basement.

Stay tuned !

  • 4 weeks later...

Well guys, @Canute, @cog, @Egilman, @Edwardkenway, @popeye the sailor, @mtaylor, @CDW, @Backer, @Landlubber Mike, @lmagna, just wanted to let you know that I am leaving the dark side and going back to church ; or is it the other way round, leaving church for the dark side?

But anyway I am dragging the AL USS Constellation kit that I received as a birthday present 9 years ago out of the stash and onto the workbench as my next build. So I will see you all over in the kit build arena as soon as the dust settles from the mass migration. 😉

But I will continue following all the non-ship builds over here. My son gifted me 2 vintage Verlinden diorama ruins for my birthday and Fathers Day so another diorama(s) is(are) in store for some future build here. One of the ruins is 1:15 scale, misprint in sellers ad, instead of 1:35 but we decided to keep it anyway. Both are Verlinden's original plaster castings in original unopened boxes.

As Arnold once said ""I'll be back"  😎

Heck Jack, I'm versatile I can be just as irritating in the ship section as anywhere else. I am more of a Constitution fan than a Constellation aficionado, but I will still find you there and haunt the shadows.

Lou, I'll do what I can to keep Jack in line... I went through the headaches of that model and ended up bashing it.

I think they have done pretty much the same thing with the real ship over the years, depending on which Constellation you are talking about. The 1797 version, the 1854 copy, or the 1961 namesake.

Yeah, that was definitely a convoluted conservation history there.... Full of personal ideals and politics... Along the way they forgot about actual history in trying to preserve history.... Or any semblance to factual historical research.... A perfect example of what agendas do to facts......

The real sad and unfortunate part, is the need to repair what was done to build a false narrative no matter the motivations once the real historians finally get their evidence recognized...

But it is a beautiful period ship as best as it can be restored into one.... and the only example representing an important part of naval history......

It never was the 1797 version in Baltimore.  The plans were burned when the Brits burned the yards.  The 1854 was new build with different lines.... As for the other Constellations... I think those are steel navy aren't they?

Yep she was a Sloop of War, never a Frigate. She didn't have the bones to be a frigate and when they rebuilt her they almost sealed her fate... within 30 years she was hogging so bad from the weight they put on her that they needed pumps 24/7 just to keep her afloat. Eventually, the muck built up around her hull where they didn't need to pump her anymore. but she started rotting....

An archeological survey told them to fix her now or scrap her, their last chance. This time, they called in the professionals Wood ship builders with a sense of history and the historians got to work digging thru the archives based upon others research and uncovered the only plausible history after eliminating all the other possibilities. Then the smoking gun document was found, an invoice for timbers from the original Constellation, (whose partially burned/buried hulk was still laying across the bay being broken at that point for salvage, and someone got the bright idea of using what was left of the old ships useable timbers in the new ship...

That is how she got her name and the only connection to the old ship....

At least that is what I heard about it....

Surprisingly, she hasn't had one single problem remaining afloat since they rebuilt her into a proper sloop of war....

Seals the deal for me....

Yep... the whole mess started because the navy couldn't build any new ships, only repair old ones.   So they drug the frigate in and knocked it apart.   Burned all but 4 timbers as I recall, and built the sloop of war.  Congress was happy, the Navy was happy.   And then when she moved to Baltimore for rework and to be a museum ship, there was a lot of not so nice things done as far as turning her into a frigate and claiming she was the original frigate.  About 5-10 folks should have had some serious jail time for that bit.

During the rebuild when they went from fake frigate to actual sloop, they replanked her some composite/impregnated boards.  Supposedly will last a long time but I've not heard much of late.
