Le Coureur 1776 by guraus - scale 1:48 - plank-on-solid hull lugger/lougre

Recommended Posts

Hello model shipbuilders!

Here is my latest build log. I started this project early last year and now I decided to share it with you.

The build is based on Boudriot's monograph "Le Coureur".

There were several things I found very interesting when I decided to build this model:

  • the sail plan
  • the clinker planking of the hull - I've never done one before
  • and the acceptable size and complexity

I plan to do a fully rigged model. Everything will be scratch built except the guns and the gun carriages which were bought from SyrenShipModelCompany.com

Here are some pictures with the solid hull construction using 5mm plywood and cedar or pine scrap for filling the spaces between frames.

And here is the clinker planking below the whale.

I used 5mm by 1mm pear wood planks with about 1 mm overlap. In all about 22 strakes.

Thank you.

I cheated a bit at bow and stern to get the planks laying flat into the rabbet. The picture shows what was done in the real ships and what should I have done. Instead I did only the first two profiles and then filed flush whatever was still pocking out of the planks. The result was the same and one can't (almost) even tell the difference even at the flat stern where you can see the planks ends.

Great job you do. I really like your style to build the little "Womanizer". Looks like you build her in her appearance under the RN flag after the rebuild, don't you?

Thank you Yves and Heinrich.

Heinrich, I am building her according with Boudriot's plans. I bought the monograph at least 10 years ago, and, at that time I read the booklet that come with it.  Now, I don't really remember her history - I just took out the plans and start building.

I always wanted to build her, but had other projects to finish and to be honest, I was a little bit scared of the clinker planking of her hull - never done one before. Turns out this type of planking is, in my opinion at least, as easy if not easier to do that the carvel planking - especially at the bow and stern where the planks have to bend in two directions. It is easier and possible to bend sidewise a plank that is at an angle with the surface then when it has to lay flat on that surface. The whole hull was planked using only straight planks, some were just narrowed toward the ends.

Anyway, here are some more progress pictures on the deck planking aft and the upper side planking.

Hi there!

Faboulous work, congratulations.

I built that model some years ago. Here is the link

Maybe there you can find some ideas. Of course it is not an example to follow. But..... at least it was done with the Boudriot monographie.

Keep the good work going and some pictures too!!

Greetings.

Giorgio.

Thank you Giorgio for the information - I've already found and looked at your model. Great job!

I am always looking for other builds of the same ship I am working on for inspiration and to find out how somebody else solved a problem that I might have.

Beatiful job!!

Excelent deck planking. Wich wood did you use?

Be carefull with installing the boat before setting the guns hooks (for their rigging), because there will be a lot of trouble getting the guns on place once the boat is already on its cradle. You woun't have enough room to work.

Keep the pictures coming my Le Coureur collegue!

Greetings.

Giorgio.
