Hi All

Just finished furling the sails on the mizzen mast yards/spars.

Next is to assemble them onto the mast.

Denis.

She looks great, Denis. Are you planning to furl all the sails? I am a big believer of sails on a sailing ship, somehow the ship looks incomplete without it.

Regards, Keith

Hi Keith

All the sails on the SOS are furled , this is the last set to do.

I think about another 6-7 weeks and she will be all finished.

Just the supports for the hull to do.

Denis.

Hi Denis, very very nice work on the sails.  Having gone through sailmaking on my Badger, I know how much time and effort it takes to add them to the model.  I love the look and color of them - very well done!

Can you also send me a PM of what material you used?  I used the thinnest cotton fabric I could find at my local fabric shop, but it was probably a bit too thick for my liking.

Hi Steve

Sorry mate no secrecy at all.

My wife was given 2 rolls of calico by the chemist at the place she worked as a purchasing officer. The rolls are about 1m in width.

I cut about 2m off one roll, to make sure the calico did not shrink I washed it and let it dry then washed it again and let it dry.

I cut the pattern of the sails out, then stitched them up.

Next job was boil 1lt of water add 3 teabags leave for 20 minutes take teabags out let water cool.

Put sails in for two and half hours, take out and lay flat to dry.

Sew 1.75mm rope to the top of the sail with invisible thread.

Sew to yard/spar with 0.30mm rope.

Wet sail then furl and tie them off with 0.10mm rope.  Mix PVA glue up with water 50/50 apply to sail let it dry.

Denis, Love you work.

To me, It took a lot of guts to become the first, I've seen, to furl the Sails.

For now, the rest is pure Glory.

Inspired by you, when my time comes, I also will Furl the Sails on my SOS to show off her

Beautiful Hull, The Rigging, which is the Glue that binds her, and while her Sails are at peace,

we get to eye & savour her Deck and her fittings while subtly being blinded by her pristine

adornments & artefacts.

Well done, look forward to seeing her finished.

I'll have to look at calico......to find the material I was looking for, I turned a Hobby Lobby upside down......the lady that helped me was a god-send! it's hard to find material that is scale friendly and non transparent :) very nice work!

nice job on setting the Mizzen up. I think it's rather neat how you've done all this before they are cemented in. I know that some install the masts without cement......free floating. but I would think it would depend on the mast rootings or if rake has to be preset. I might try this with the Half Moon......but unsure how it will work out....I'll need to jig them for rake. great work Denis!

Hi All

Oh dear I have made a mistake I put the sail on the cross jack.

Thanks to Vince pointing this out to me saying the SOS did not have the sail on the cross jack yard/spar.

Again thank you Vince for pointing this out to me.

Wow Denis!

I thought the furled sails looked perfect in your previous pictures, but to see them fitted just takes it to a whole new level!!

The only apology you need to make over your photos is that there isn't more of them haha.  Your Sovereign of the Seas just looks so good!
