Build log part 50

 

 

 

doing the folded and tied hammocks for the netting, after blackening the brass mesh and fastening it onto the hammock cranes Here starboard side, port side and QD ballustrade still to be done in the same way

 

I did several Trials first until this version was given the go...

 

 

 

use ordenary parcel wrapping paper with a light structure in the paper in length direction (resembles the rather much worn / greasy Color of the mens canvas bedding. All rolled up over a 2mm drill

 

the dark lines resemble the tie bounds of the hammock

 

1 mm drill used at the inner side for folding Support (two equal long parts)

 

mini laundry clampers hold the folded part

 

the folded "hammock" is supported with a drop of PA glue (till dry), so there will be no extra spreadwise stress on the netting

I saw a Film on TV a couple of days ago, "Master and Commander" and the vessel "HMS Surprise" sraring Craig Russel, was very interesting to see these details, the rather low deckbeams, also the chain pumps in action, hammock nettings, guns in action, two to three men at the pumps crank Lever, etc, the film makers must have had good consultants for 18th century naval ship equipment....

Great work on the hammocks and all round - she is looking really good.

 

Man, your decks look intense for all of their detail. I have to search through your log to figure out what I'm missing on my decks  . I'm guessing one thing is the anchor ropes being taken back to the capstan.

 

Anyway - very nice stuff and I look forward to more.

I do`nt quite understand what you mean with "...anchor ropes taken back to the capstan..", as far as I learned the only rope around the capstan is the Messenger cable or ?

Sorry Nils - yes it is the messenger cable that I meant - I'm still learning . Nonetheless it is something that very few other builders show.

the Kind tip for how to rig the anchor cables came from B.E. with ref. also to Dafi`s very nice HMS Victory anchor cable Arrangement. Before that I never was aware of the function of that Messenger cable... It reminded me a Little bit of the "Paternoster lift cabins in manifold Story high old Office houses, where you step in go to the required Elevation an step off again...

Hi Nils -- I've seen a few other builds with the hammocks and hammock netting, but it's been a while.  That's a terrific detail -- one among many.

I learnt from this Forum first time that the hammocks were used as splitter and muskeetball catcher when the ship was in close range battle and it makes sense. Probably there were quite some round holes in the one or other ones hammocks, perhaps even balls still trapped in the canvas when unfolding...

was thinking of how to do the Stern lantern..., (not shown on the Amati plan)

 

I like the building kit set Chuck is offering, but I rather prefer one in brass. Exploring Ebay I found a nostalgic nice litte lantern for street illumination in scale 1:87 (H0, and the description said its the brass casting Version, that was exactly what I was looking for, and it was with clear glass instead of milkglass. When I opened the parcel, Oh dear, I was Holding a plastic Version with a reinforced brass tube lamppost Questioning this with the seller I learned that only the lamppost was to be in brass. So I sprayed the lamphousing in Brass Color, made a new bracket, arranged for a candle inside, and let my opinion of the view settle a bit...

 

 

 

this is make Viessmann lantern No. 6071, the railroad Freaks shall know....

The lamp housing with 17,5 mm hight ist just right to use for scale 1:64

 

the lantern Comes in black Color, top cover and glass insert can be removed. Here a new bracket is made together with a candle with dropping wax.

and assembled at the stern

 

the bracket still requires some paint touchup

I dont want to go philosophical, but I trust I know what you mean...

 

I have thought of this also many times and come to the conclusion that there probably is a certain range within which an individual can, or is willing (with pleasure) to perform acc. to imagination of the final result and what constantly comes to mind or is added or changed during the processing duration...

 

This wonderful Forum is the best example of what I mean with ref to the range, and every fellow model builder with full right is proud of his /her results when he /she goes to the Limits of that set Obligation range.

Considering this for a painting Artist, a musician, a sculpturer,or even a shipmoldel builder is somewhere the same attitude, depending on the set Obligation level, there I am with you.

 

There is a Little jokie i like..., A sculpturer is asked how the hell he is possible to carve such a wonderful Lion out of a wooden tree chunk, with chissel and carving knives, and he says... "well it is not so difficult, I just knock off and cut away everything that does not look like Lion"

the term "butchers tape" is new to me..., ist not gummed paper from a roll I`m using, It`s ordinary packing paper sheet like you would wrap a box in as a parcel.

I cut 20 mm broad pieces of 105 mm length and draw lines on them with an inc pen for CD labeling before rolling the stripes over a 2mm drill and glueing down the end.

Great looking lantern Nils.  I remember years ago at several NRG conferences the topic of fine art would always crop up.  And it could get kind of lively.  That is one issue that will never be decided on.

HI have been wondering where the QD capstan bars are stowed away, so that they are at hand when required. Perhaps someone knows... ? Here a solution, Popeye would probably call it the club rack

Nils, from what I have read it would depend on the size of the vessel.  A rack against the bulwarks or house where they were out of the way when sailing or in a space cubby hole near the capstain.
