Paul, I’m really enjoying your build, especially the “how to” parts - it looks great! This may well have to be my next project.

I’ve used a lot of photo etched brass in some of my other projects and have found that thin super glue applied sparingly with a needle or small glue looper works well and holds for an extended time. I don’t have any experience with soldering but probably need to give it a try - will add this to my things to do next list.

Thanks everyone for the comments and likes.

I have the chainplates done and the deadeyes stropped.

PXL_20210904_215748326.thumb.jpg.7d934fec09440082ef1c5c84fa3ef1bf.jpg

One issue I am having is the end of the 22 guage wire for the stropping is inside the chainplates and it is springing back and doesn't want to stay tight and the deadeyes come out easy.

PXL_20210904_234606398.thumb.jpg.9fed7320214e86fce914670223c1d15b.jpg

Not sure how to remedy this or have the "seam" at a different spot instead of the bottom.

These deadeyes are Chuck's new ones that you don't have to make and they really look  good though.

So I redid the deadeye stropping as I didn't like the way it was.

First used a 1/4 inch drill bit and wound some coils with 22 gauge wire.

PXL_20210905_142252632.thumb.jpg.1d67e37a8171fe76672c256b4e42ee06.jpg

The cut out the coils with flush cutters.

PXL_20210905_142257958.thumb.jpg.187480653af82e7f03f287a453d061f8.jpg

The soldered the ends together and with pliers made up the hook on the bottom. You will need a lot of these as they do pop with pressure.

PXL_20210905_155355241_MP.thumb.jpg.9439f44492fa543b26a665f2f6fe990a.jpg

Here are the eight I redid. It took about 3 times as many coils until I got the eight done.

PXL_20210905_160342230.thumb.jpg.90ac249938958885216a771846a6b090.jpg

Once they were installed I touched up the black paint.

I already had shaped the bowsprit earlier while I was waiting for paint/glue to dry so I was ready to mount it and complete the chapter.

I am now ready to move to chapter 12 where we start some of the rigging.

This has been a very fun build and I am learning new skills as I go along.

Wrapped a length of .025 rope with the Syren Serve-O-Matic for the Bobstay. I am using Gutterman cotton thread for my rope.

PXL_20210905_190641235.thumb.jpg.a766ec85d043cdab089433e571c6f627.jpg

Bobstay is rigged.

One question: does the wrapping around the rope extend past the cut end as it is in the bow end or does it leave rope showing as I did at the block?

Working on the mast I made the stop for the rings. This is the second one I made as the first one broke too easy. This time I made a boxwood sandwich with the grain 90 degrees and it held up better.

Also used a tick strip to mark the locating holes for the cleats.

PXL_20210908_221329244.thumb.jpg.f362bb17af7b6f53ec845312c651e05a.jpg

In these hole I glued a small piece of wire and also drilled locating holes in each cleat in the center.

PXL_20210908_235231581.thumb.jpg.881c815938756ac9579645f30e8082e9.jpg

Once the cleats were shaped a bit they were glued on trying to get them square.

PXL_20210909_000104994.thumb.jpg.bd8caf70d36f8a14221a9287819bde09.jpg\

Getting back to my question I had I decided that the pieces at the top of the mast should be beveled to form with the mast.

PXL_20210909_010556402_MP.thumb.jpg.07b5d402dd1dd6567ecfd2f109bd5582.jpg

I think this looks better.

PXL_20210909_010633070.thumb.jpg.8812c4b5cfea51f7b6d2e4c230072a0c.jpg

So the lower mast is done except for painting and some finish sanding and yes the rings still slide down over the top pieces.

I believe the shoulders on the mast should be thinner and flatter per the plans, but it's your model.

Nice work on the stop and chocks - it's hard getting all that stuff to line up right, well done.

Yes it was easier using the tic strip though and using the wires.

So making the Burton Pendants I first siezed the rope the full length and then siezed the block onto it. This didn't look right to me so I redid them.

PXL_20210920_215924456.thumb.jpg.5730b1a41c1e1f93c3dafb216bc0004f.jpg

I then did the whole seizing after putting the block on and then wrapped the rope from the block up. Was a simple matter to tie some rope on the block to hold one end. I am hoping this is the right way for these.

Here is the color of the cotton thread I am using.

Now I have been having trouble with my serving machine as I wasn't real careful when assembling it and it was binding and squeaking. What solved it was to spray the gears and also the joint with this silicone spray. Now it is slick and I can turn it with one finger.

The pendants are all rigged but not tightened yet.  I sure have a mess of rope on the deck I need to take care of soon.

Sorry for hijacking Paul's thread but I tried to give some guidance on serving issues here.  It looks like Paul is using Gutterman 50 wt but lets wait to see if he confirms that/

Common Gutterman 50wt sewing thread is fine and all that’s needed for serving rope on the Servo-matic. One of those things that doesn’t require overthinking.

At this stage I made myself a jig for making rope coils.

There are three different sizes.

PXL_20210922_215813919.thumb.jpg.d742d187d1f743abed6eea0b03da9ffe.jpg

First put a rope end in the bottom hole and hold it with a toothpick.

PXL_20210922_215937627.thumb.jpg.b61512d2bc3b1010c3668f6ae3db9a6b.jpg

Wrap the coils around and then using another toothpick at the top.

PXL_20210922_220104992.thumb.jpg.16afab19cfd3741e4a8215a1639d2a14.jpg

Then feed the end through the slot and finish wrapping.

PXL_20210922_220136338.thumb.jpg.627053298180bfcd5d2e1781c0805620.jpg

Once the wrap is done feed the end through the bottom hole, Brush on some thinned PVA and then hit it with a hair drier to speed up the curing of the glue.

PXL_20210922_220240104.thumb.jpg.d3a2058e976cbf15a2ea15ef25483e1f.jpg

Slowly work the coil off with tweezers and final shape it.

PXL_20210922_220627506_MP.thumb.jpg.b95655b10c440387eb715d306d6ad15d.jpg

You can then trim the ends off.

Paul,

I agree that wrapping the serving over the seizing looks better.  For what is worth, I am now using Mara polyester thread for serving.  I found the cotton thread was a bit furry and Mara gives a smoother result in my opinion.  Because I am winding my own rope I have this in various sizes and I like to use thinner serving thread on thinner rope. If you use 50 wt thread on say 0.45 mm rope it almost doubles the diameter.  This looks wrong to my eye.

I have the shrouds deadeyes rigged. Going to let them settle in and do the backstays and forestays before I do the final tightening.

I have had some issue with diluted PVA leaving a white residue so I am experimenting with modge podge diluted to see how that works for rigging. If that doesn't work I might try some different white glue as maybe what I have is bad as it is old.

Anyways...Pics or it didn't happen. :)
