Thank you Alan,   its just a buff  colour first then a couple  of  Dark Brown  washes  - it  adds the shadow detail and  ages the wood a bit.

Evening all,   not much of an update  - more a repair,  basically  I was looking over the hull  thinking about starting the primer on it soon, when I noticed  some glue had gotten smeared along the front area of the hull   - how that happened I have no idea, but it had set  so I set about using some fine wet and dry  to remove it  -  slow work  but I managed  to remove it to about a 90%  acceptable  standard.

 

No pics of it as its nothing to really photograph.

Evening all,   only a small update   -  I have primed the Hull,   but firstly  I had to  strip and clean my airbrush  "Yep it was blocked again"   I used my  airbrush  cleaner and a tooth brush  and really got in the nozzle and gave it a right clean out  - suprising how small fragments of paint  (mainly vallejo Primer)  can clog it.

Anyway  its gone on quite well  no visible runs and a smooth coverage.

 

I could not take any pics as my phone was dead.

I detest Vajello paint. Tamiya and Mr Hobby is just so much easier m, the Tamiya lacquer thinner with retarder is just the answer, it works with the AL latest too. I must clean my airbrushes at least 3 times a session now.

Greg I work in a small  lounge with the admiral  about Ten feet away from me   - she has weakened  lungs   - so anything   unless it has no  vapour or smell  is a  Serious No No,    I was  spraying   last night  into my make shift  cardboard box  pray booth  - and  I had to have the back door open   despite it being below freezing out side  - I could see the vapours   comong off my airbrush   and  rising  towards my light above my  table   - even though they are Acrylic  I could smell and tast the  vapours.

I find the Vallejo black primer to be good at blocking the airbrush nozzle. I try to quickly get cleaner into the brush as soon as I've finished painting to dilute it and then really clean the nozzle. I'm going to try another primer next but I do like the coverage from the Vallejo.

It definitely helps. I spray in the garage. I just made a first attempt at hair spray paint shipping and the garage stinks of cheap hair spray. I'm glad I didn't try that in the house.

We are seriously limited in space here  just the one room down stairs and a  tiny narrow kitchen, and a  5 feet  by  10 feet back patio, not even a front garden,   its like a dolls house   lol.

I use Vallejo’s thinner with their paints and primers.  I don’t use Vallejo on areas that will be taped as I find it can pull off.

 

When I first got my airbrush, I thought you could rinse acrylics thoroughly through the airbrush with just water and not have to do a more detailed cleaning.  With Vallejo, however, I find it leaves a residue which will gunk things up.  So, I clean out the nozzle, needle, etc. after every session.  It’s sorta soured me on Vallejo, but otherwise I like the color coverage, no fumes, and not having to mix in thinner in the cup.  To really clean it, you can shoot lacquer thinner after shooting Vallejo but I know you don’t want fumes.

 

Now I’m more a fan of Tamiya and Mr. Color, even with the pre-mixing and fumes.  I find the paint cleans out of the airbrush much more thoroughly than Vallejo.  But, certainly understand why you don’t want to go that route.

Thanks Mike,    I think what good about the Vallejo Primer is the way it shrinks down  onto the surface,  I have been spraying it with vallejo  flow improver  (just a few drops into the cup)      what I will do  is  give it a good few days before I  mask up the hull   for my other paints.

You probably already know this, but you can remove some of the tackiness of the tape by first putting it on your skin, then on the model.  That removes a little bit of the adhesive and may lead to less pulling of the paint.  I've done this with Tamiya tape and it still works fine.

 

Another thing that might help is to let the primer cure completely.  When priming, I let it sit for a good 24 hours.  Acrylics are tricky in that they dry quickly but have a long curing time.

 

To be honest, I haven't had much problem with Vallejo pulling off on plastic.  It's usually on PE that's the problem.

I’m a complete novice in airbrushing but through trial and error, so far, Ive settled on model air plus a few drops of flow improver. That seems to have largely stopped clogging mid-spray. I tried thinning model air but by the time I got it so it stopped clogging, the opacity was very poor and I ended up needing six or seven coats. Likewise tried adding a bit of retarder but don’t remember than making any difference. I also make up the mix in little bottles first and give it a good shake.

 

I’m not even sure what difference there is between cleaner and thinners, been using both but mostly thinners. I do a complete clean in between colours and at the end of every session.

 

I like acrylics, so easy to clean and remove if I make a mess, and virtually no smell or fumes. I have one of those airbrush cleaning jars, which helps.

After i finish cleaning the airbrush I spray a small quantity of cleaner into a paper towel in a good light against a dark background and look at the spray pattern to make sure its symmetrical and strong. Then I can put the brush away knowing its good to go for the next session. If the pattern looks weak then I pull it apart again and poke the nozzle out again. It doesn't take much to obstruct the flow. I'm sure water would be just as good for the post clean check. its reduced the annoyance of loading the brush up and finding its not spraying well

Evening all,   a wee  bit of  progress  today,   I have left  the  Vallejo primer  for over Three days  so I thought it would  be ok to mask up  the boot line  ready  for airbrushing,   I measured  Two strips  about 1.8mm  wide  - roughly  8 feet  eqv,   a bit akward  to cut  as they needed to be longer than my ruler  - so I had to slide it along carefully  keeping it in place,   then I  placed them and burnished them down  using a cloth,    it has taken a bit of the  primer away  (more a rubbing smooth  than flaking)   so  top coats  should go  over the top ok.

Hi all,     sorry  for my lack of updates  -  real life events  have  taken me away from playing on my Hood  - in the shape  of  decorating our  bathroom,   I have been  re painting  from the old tired  sand colour to a fresher  apple Green colour, that  has  required several  coats  over the top  (but I have picked up a useful  technique  -  dry each coat with a hairdryer)   this way  I can  tell if the layers have dried smooth or patchy  and gauge how many  coats are needed  (about Three is doing it).

I am nearly  finished but its kept me away from my build.
