HMS Hood by Old Collingwood - Flyhawk - 1/700 - PLASTIC - After her explosion.

Wonder if anyone can 3D print these railings  to match the PE ones?

If you post a sketch and it looks feasible I’ll have a go and, if successful post them to you. I know from working on the 1/100 Victory that I can print bars at 0.3mm but I’ve concluded that this is just about my lower limit. Any smaller than that and the chances of a successful print, let alone being able to remove the supports, become too small.

Maybe ask Flyhawk for some spares? You’re doing such a fine job of this model that you’re selling 1/700 to us and, if I was the manufacturer, I’d give you all the spares in the world!

OC, I think Gator Grip glue is available, but you need to email Kenny to get it.

I'll second Alan's recommendation for using it. I apply the regular (thicker) with a paint brush. I keep a cup of water handy to clean the brush. And I let it tack up for a minute or so. Parts seem to stick well.

On Hold:  Heinkel USS Choctaw paper

Down the road: Shipyard HMC Alert 1/96 paper, Mamoli Constitution Cross, MS USN Picket Boat #1

Thank you sincerly  for that offer   - I have managed to get a pic of  part of the PE sheets  showing  the  rails that are broken  on my   sheet,   to give an idea of the  size of the rails   the sheet length from end to end is  13.5cm    hope you can work out the rest from that.

Once scaled, the bars come out as 0.1mm - 0.15mm wide, presumably the same for thickness and the gaps between bars appear the same.. I'm afraid that's just too small. Any gap less than 0.3mm tends to become bridged by the resin which is what I expect to happen here. If it wasn't for the risk of damaging the FEP (or worse, the screen!) I'd give it a whirl but the chances of success are so small I'd best pass. Sorry! I guess this is why they're PE.

Thank you for offering  to give it a go   -  I thought it would be a  close call thing as the PE pieces at 1/700  are so small.

You should be able to buy generic rails from a variety of manufacturers to replace the ones from your kit.  I wouldn’t be surprised if Flyhawk offers them.

Thanks mike, there is a secondary  PE Sheet  that also has the main deck railings  and some other lengths  - I need to sit down and properly  review where they are all designed to go  or if any are spares.

Hi OC, Flyhawk and White Ensign have frets of railings in various styles. Counsel have "easy glue" generic railings as well as specific WW2 RN railings. I have used both successfully although cutting a strip out of a great full of railings is likely to make your eyes cross.

good luck

Alan

He said in an earlier post he was giving up on the railings...too small.

(I will be honest and say at this scale the railings are beyond me  and I do not have the full set now anyway  - so I am  going to build her  minus the railings.

Craig  just incase I came across  confusing  - in the kit there are Two large sheets of  PE  Sheet 1  contains the correct size  rails for the  Weather Deck  and  superstructure, apart from a  few peices I fitted earlier to the superstructer, this is the sheet  that I have managed ot damage the rails on, there is another sheet   - sheet2  this contains  the main deck forward and aft rail  aswel as a few others that I can not find  thier intended use as it does not list them on the PE  instructions.

I was seriously put off  with how  difficult and delicate these are, but after  finding a  better gluing option and ordering it,  its kind of given me a second wind - so I will  re check my other  PE sheet  to find out what is spare  to do the 12  (6 each side)  sections of railing  on the weather deck.

Its all part of Kev's journey, bit like going to the dark side, but with the lights on

Evening all, hope everyones holidays are going well,   I had to  pull my fingure out  and clear the table  ready for my spraying booth,   first  was to lay some primer down on all the  sub assemblies,   these were attached to blue tack  lids on my bottles and  tap on the end of lolly sticks,  I then got everything set up and put a coat down,  after drying with the dryer, I mixed up  my AP507A and put down a few light coats.

These parts are put a side  waiting to fully dry before they get some detail painting  like the corticene  on a couple of  sub assembly decks.

Evening all,   somemore progress  this evening  -  I have glued the sub assemblies down onto the deck,   the main conning tower was a bit of a tight fit  and needs a bit of a touch up  where a few bits of paint was scrubbed  away.

Oh  I painted one of the decks  in corticene.

Still some more detail painting to do
