Afternoon all,   so  with the couple of areas where the  deck vaneer  had  lifted,  I got the front  water break  and while holding in place  I marked the front edge,  then moved it out the way  - then I cut carefuly  along the one pencil line,   I was then able to put some more glue under both edges and pressed  both down,   I  was also  able to lift  the rear  section close to the rear bulkhead  and put some more glue under and push it back in place.

I also touched up the barbetts  - so this is the current  situation,   the rear deck has been weathered  more than the  other decks  as it used to get  very wet  very often.

The weathering of the wooden decks looks very good. The wood really has character. Do you use washes or oils to get that effect? The model definitely looks like its in an upward trajectory now. Great stuff

Hi Alan,    I used a  Earth Shade  Acrylic wash  over it  - just brushed over  - I use it on my figures  etc.

Evening all,  I managed a couple of hours on this today,   starting on the bow   I fitted the Two raised  sections over each  anchor howser,  they still need painting  - the glue residue  will vanish  when I flat coat  the whole thing at the end,   I am also starting to  populate  the deck  -  capstans, mushroom vents  etc etc   - plenty more  to  fit yet,  paintwork  needs a bit of a touch  up  but that  will be done when all the parts are fitted.

Think I will  be doing a bit more on this later,   as I am  stalling my  Tank builld  as I'm waiting on some  airbrush pipe cleaners  to arrive  (as the Vallejo Acrylic Primer  doesn't half  block  it up).

I will have other things I can do on this  plenty of  sub assemblies  to build.

Evening all,  I started  this again today  - but I've  run into so many problems  with it and noticed a few areas that are  in really bad shape,  and poor fitting of the main superstructure dowen to the deck,    that I have decided  to  put it on hold  till I decide if its worth  doing more repair work to  it.

So  fir now  this build is  stalled.

Are the deck to superstructure fit issues due to the wooden deck application, or something else?

Hiya mate,   its because the main block of the superstructure has a slight bend in it  and  lifts, I have tried  getting some glue in the  rear end where it meets the  rear lower deck, but no good  it keeps lifting leaving a slight gap, thats noticable enough, also  some  small parts hav ebeen knocked off due to the man handling of it,   and  I noticed that a  wee bit of the main tower has  had some heat  distortion  when I was  drying some of the pain  with  the hair dryer.

Also  some of the paint areas are rough  with  dust under the paint  etc.

If Im honest  apart from a few of the  flaws  like the warped main  superstructure,  I  should have assembled it in a different order  and limited my man handling of it.

Hi mate,

Problem is  we learn our little mistakes and  building flaws  and notice a kit error   when its too late,    think kits should come in Two's   one to  test and  learn  things  and the Second to get it Right.

Learned something though  -  I'm best at hand painting  small figures   and the occasional  tank.

Think that will be my plan Kevin   - stick to what I'm good at, I have another out building to  create  in my dio, then I can get it placed on the base  and start working on the scenery.

I have to agree. By the time you have finished with a model you now know how to build it properly - but its too late. That is the value I see in a lot of the logs; getting some idea of the build flow - or not! On the complicated builds I find that very hard to plan out. I also find it a very nerve wracking experience to add the delicate PE clad structures to the deck; especially with wooden decks added which can intrude into the base of the structures. I Have started test fitting all the superstructure blocks before detailing them up.

Its a shame to see this log parked, I was enjoying the progress and admired the model as it developed. I thought it was looking very good. I;m excited to see the Waterloo diorama back though.

I still wouldn’t know how to really plan a build, but I tried something on the Cutty sark that I think works well for me: I test fitted almost every single part before doing anything else, to get a feel for what goes where, how things interact with others, what parts I would remake and so on. I labelled each part or subset and keep them in little ziplock bags. I did also buy a second kit off eBay but haven’t needed to dip into that yet. Even so, I would still do a better job if I started all over again.

On 1:700 scale ship models, I am beginning to doubt the value added by wood deck applications. Painted wood decks can be very convincing in this scale and it eliminates the fit issues with superstructures. The wood decks are cut so precise, just a tiny fraction of misalignment can cause the superstructure pieces not to fit.

I would agree with you Craig. They also complicate the build flow trying to keep paint off them and can need masks. Once you start to weather them I think a painted deck can be just as effective.

That fit issue is a real risk

Hi all,    I had another quick look over  my kit earlier  and  think its  savable,  It wont be  100%  as good as it could be  - but  think  when I get back on it  I might be able to make it reasonable.

I had even considered making it part damaged as she was  from her first  hits  from Bismarck  before her fatal blow  -  she  received a  shell on her  aft boat deck  that caused ammo  locker fires  - but think that might be beyond  my skills.

I will have to have a think.........Stay  Tuned.....

I  have been  reading  as much  info regarding her fatal encounter  with Bismarck,  and  the nature of her destruction  and blowing apart,  and its  kind of made me curious  about possibly  destroying  her  and turning her into a Two element  as she was when she was blown up  - with both the  forcastle-mid ship  and  rear quarter  sticking out of a  dio of a small area of sea.

As a kid I used to make Airfix ships  then  set fire to them on my old pond and watch them burn  (weird)   but this destruction  would be a different thing.

Just an idea  going round in my head at the moment.

This is the kind of dio I could do  - Imagine the main forward section going back just behind the rear most funnel,  and sticking  up  out of the water at this kind of angle  -  and with the stern going down fast  with just this amount  showing  - with a wake of water between them with  wreckage  and floating bits on the water.

I like your plan better than just shelving a great model.

I think how you do the sea will be critical. Maybe create a base with some depth so you can cut the hull far enough back to avoid damage to elements you want to keep. It would also allow you to set the parts at the angles you want.

A layer of epoxy resin would probably be good at the surface.

@mikegris an e,left at seascapes add probably has great suggestions

I'm looking forward to seeing it develop

Good luck

Alan
