What always got me was the guard when attacked by the bad guys, always managed to shoot accurately and hit one or two of them.  I was tough to hit anything from a helicopter but I can't imagine hitting anything firing from a stagecoach trying to outrun the baddies.  Maybe my problem was I wasn't John Wayne?

Ever wonder how they manage to shoot two hundred rounds from a six-shooter without ever reloading. 🤔 And that rifle only held a max 15 rounds.

i wonder if the wild west was full of racing wagons, and littered with dead cowboys and other baddies,

and if you hit a stage coach passenger, do you cut a line in the side of your trusty steed, to mark the occasion?

That's Hollywood!

It really wasn't like that at all... in some ways better, in others worse... in the movies and TV every stagecoach has a shotgun rider, in real life, there was seldom a shotgun rider even when the strongbox was full... Robbing a stagecoach was a very difficult proposition and not tried often... Banks were much much easier.... Heck even robbing a train was easier....

Never take your history from the media.... And in today's world the media includes the supposed news services.... ABC news for example is run by ABC entertainment....

good afternoon everyone

thankyou for likes and comments

with 75% of the chassis done, the sharp shooters and  paying passengers need somewhere to sit

the internal shaped formers help to create the shape on the sides of the carriage, these were made up last night and allowed to dry

today the two sides were married via the floor, pva and C/A  and accelerator made quick work of the setting process

two end pieces go in to ensue the top is the correct distance apart

the floor end is then chamfered to ensure the outside skin is not fouled

the skin was ok to put on, i never used any heat or water, just took me time and pinned as i went along

the skin is way oversized, to allow for not putting it on straight

i will now wait until tomorrow before trimming it back

The Overland Stage Company used yellow and red, the yellow for the chassis is traditional and was carried over when Overland was acquired by Wells Fargo.... (they kept the yellow chassis and just used a simple varnish on the coachwork)

the kit calls out for the yellow on the sides only not the top or bottom, i tried to match the yellow as best i could on the box art and phots, but they all vary,

Yep, there was no hard and fast rule on any of them... About the only thing that is common to them all is the yellow painted oak wheels and silver steel tyres.. Even the yellow color could vary by where the coach was built, they all sourced local materials...

good afternoon everyone

the outside skin never went quite to plan, all my efforts to put it on straight resulted in well, it not going on straight,  i ended up with a rather odd looking twisted box. one end was ok. so i but line across and removed the other end, re applied and it is ok now,

i never noticed it the time as there is a large off cut to allow for being off centre

the walnut veneer is slowly going in, but its a pain, so fragile

the photo's do me no favours at all

Talking about paint-schemes: over here in continental Europe I think by the early 19th century most stage-coach services were state-run in one way or another, with inns being sort of franchises. The coaches were mostly painted yellow with black iron-work and lining. Also leather-work including roofs, boot covers, etc. was black.

how was the wooden body protected, was it varnish, and if so, would a high gloss been available, as that is what if fancy putting on?

and thank you for your wealth of knowledge on the subject

Kevin, at that time either oil-based paints or (shellac) lacquer based paints and varnishes would have been available.

Oil-paints, when new can be quite glossy, but it also depends on the pigments and other accessories used in the paint formulation. When exposed to the wheather, it would dull. Oil-paints remain a bit elastic, so would be well suited to paint structures such as coaches.

Shellac-based paints, being harder, could be polished to a very high gloss, but would be more prone to cracking. Colourless shellac varnishes of wood can be polished to your wishes, between satin and high gloss, and would be quite tough. On the other hand they are not really weather resistant.

I think the wood-work would have been either painted with an lineseed oil-based paint, or be treated just with lineseed oil.

I was wondering how they were going to form the convex curve of the coach sides, you going to steam the veneer or lay it dry?

Depends upon where they were used, if on the post road between Boston and NY they were probably painted in shellac paints and polished to a very high gloss... (for a higher class crowd) Out west, painted in whatever colors the line used, not polished with bare wood oiled.... They all used gold leaf lettering in the usual fancy script style and again depending on where they worked lamps on either the front two corners or all four corners... No glazing but in areas that were subject to dusty conditions they usually had canvas dodgers to cover the windows....

Another thing, western coaches used either a four or six horse team where eastern coaches used a two or occasionally four horse team..... Western coaches weren't as ornate as the eastern coaches.... they were more utilitarian....

Thank you so much for your reply, i appreciate that very much,

i would still like to put some gloss varnish/lacquer on there

thank you, the kit provides for the window blinds and lettering, in fact the kit does a good set up - but as i have found in the past AL does provide poor strip-wood

lamps are also included, powered by a 9 volt battery, but they look over sizedSee the source image

They would be bigger cause they were paraffin wax based lamps, the base was a big giant wax pot or candle holder... Much like a whale oil lamp but with much heavier oil... they were bigger cause they didn't put out much light, barely enough to see the step into the stage.... But, they would burn all night without tending and last for several days before refilling.....
