USS Wasp LHD-1 by king derelict - FINISHED - HobbyBoss - 1/700 - PLASTIC

I finished the PE on the fantail. It went quite well the PE is very nice to work with. My Gators Grip is almost out so I had bought a bottle of the Mig Ultra Glue to see how it behaves. It seems very similar to the Gators Grip which is good to know.

I then moved onto the catwalks and spent the rest of the day trying to put together the aft starboard section behind the elevator.

There are two main pieces plus three pieces of railing.

The PE instructions really don't provide a good visualisation of how the pieces go together and then install on the hull. Especially the relationship between PE piece #2 and piece #37

858101379_RIMG0565(1280x720).jpg.3f1461706ce28ae4a4962432dc44d974.jpg

Luckily I was able to find the detail in one of the photos

389310712_13P00456_058(2).jpg.f9c214005e3dcdf3da43c3de93cabe8a.jpg

I may be a bit challenged but that was not how i interpreted the instructions. I was able to dismantle my effort and remake the catwalk.

727446130_RIMG0567(1280x720).jpg.ecaaae66ca7e5d527eca94d2a482fe6a.jpg

The photo also shows that the ordinance dump chute seen in the above photo (the right hand one) doesn't exist in the real ship in 2013 so I'll have to clip that off and check if all the others are really there.

I also did a fit check with the elevators in the raised position and found they didn't quite fit in the space in the deck. I was able to remove a small amount of material from the sides of the elevator and the rails on the hull and get a good fit. A lucky catch before the hull gets all delicate.

The PE catwalk build up is going to take a while to work round the hull and as usual the photos show up some faults to correct

Thanks for looking in

Alan

I woke up this morning and realised that the aft catwalk is still wrong. The catwalks generally extend out from the edge of the flight deck and its usually not possible to fall off the edge of the flight deck and get your feet wet without at least bouncing off the catwalk. I dismantled the efforts of yesterday. I was lucky the thicker PE came off without any damage or distortion. I don't think I would have got away with this with Flyhawk PE. The use of Gators Grip glue helped too; it seems to separate fairly easily and clean up well.

The upper catwalks were reinstalled in the correct position and it now looks right. A bit more touching up needed but I'm glad I did the rework

A serious day of folding and building the starboard catwalks. Its slow work waiting for the lower catwalks to set in place before adding the upper ones. However the starboard side is complete apart from a couple of bracing pieces that go under the forward platforms

Thank you Mike. The Hobby Boss PE provides the catwalks but no railings for them. I don't think it would look good so i'm very glad that I got the Eduard set. Even if it is a bit trying to fit it does look nice and it mirrors the real thing pretty closely. So far I have only found them to be wrong with the number of ordinance chutes but the ship has been around since 1986 and I'm attempting to show it in 2013 so things may well have changed.

I tidied up and finished the last PE details on the starboard side.

It seemed like a good time to fit the elevators. They are going to get delicate with the PE nets fitted so I thought it was time to install them now. I set on at deck level and the other at the hanger deck level

861623563_RIMG0600(1280x720).jpg.bc5153027b00ce26092ed53f0fd54424.jpg

I moved onto the port side and made up and fitted the bow section; folded up the next two sections and left the glue to set on the additional railings sections.

1693234707_RIMG0603(1280x720).jpg.ac9fbabd238aafc072fff85412d127fd.jpg

I left the hull on its side to allow the railings to set up without drooping and came back to find the hull had fallen off the base. The pesky Amazon double sided tape failed again. Luckily it fell the right way, two inches onto teh work surface instead of three feet to the tile floor. I had a heart in mouth few minutes looking it over but so far I see no damage. Curiously I had been thinking about fitting the island  I am so glad i didn't; I don't think the radar arrays would have survived.

I had bought some heavy duty double sided tape and have great hopes for it - although its going to be handled with care.

Thanks for looking in

The catwalks are really making the model in my view but they are a huge exercise in breath control, accurate folding, and careful placement. Its pushing my boundaries and if I try to do too much its almost stressful. After the catwalks there are all the nets to fit too. Oh My

Double sided tape?   I've been using a bath towel folded/rolled to hold my ship on their side.  I'll have to consider that, but then, mine all wood.

It may not be an acceptable thing to do and it really only works for waterline models but I like to work with the hull on a base. It keeps my paws off the hull and from both marring the paint and touching something fragile. The Wasp is especially bad with ladders platforms and catwalks all over the hull. Generally the standard Scotch double sided stuff works well for my little destroyers but the Amazon tape has very little grip. The problem is compounded because the Wasp model doesn't have a waterline baseplate so the tape is only gripping the edges of the hull.

So far the heavy duty stuff is working well (until it falls off again 😄)

The catwalk saga continues. Actually I finished the port side lower catwalks today

906274255_RIMG0610(1280x720).jpg.a3d05e1de1338f906ea40671dd641f75.jpg

The last section continues round to the fantail and is not at all nice to fit. The weight of the fantail section makes the piece try to sag out of position. I've started adding a little CA glue to the tops of the struts to help hold it all in place and that is working better.

953345210_RIMG0609(1280x720).jpg.e63e9fd19e205ba70d3e7f3d3e3b7237.jpg

I also fitted the first section of the upper catwalks on the port side. This is the real insanity stuff; trying to place a long unwieldy section and line it up with the lower catwalk struts.

I don't normally like it but I am using a few dabs of CA on the upper catwalks to get an improved bond with the lower catwalks The Gators Grip takes too long to really get hold and the pieces are apt to drift.

1498511796_RIMG0611(1280x720).jpg.9961602d4906403b7dae397915b0137d.jpg

Three more sections will complete the port side. Then there are some ladders and platforms and braces to add. The PE frets are still pretty well populated

Thanks for looking in

I got in the PE groove today and kept it moving forwards with breaks now and then for tea and to rest the eyes. Actually I think I found a better way to fold the braces for the catwalks and that speeded up the job enough to keep up the momentum.

So I finished all the port side catwalks today. A major cheer and free pints of Old Peculiar all round.

I'm now starting on the smaller port side platforms and the boat davits. The first of the platforms is installed but a bit blurry in the photos

Same old catwalk photos but i tried a different angle to show the way the two levels lay along the hull. Generally they came out quite nicely and they do make the model I think

Lots more still to do. The nettings will be the next major task. I'm trying to decide when to add the island. At last the PE frets are starting to empty

I hadn't realised what I had let myself in for with the PE on this kit. This is a new level of PE work for me. I think the Eduard PE is making it easier for me. The thickness is enough to keep everything straight. The railings may be a touch overscale but I think I would have struggled more with the delicate Flyhawk stuff. The kit PE doesn't have any railings for the catwalks which I think would look strange. The bending tools are great for getting the long straight folds.

After completing the catwalks yesterday, today was focused on the braces that support the smaller platforms. Lots of thin brass to bend and fit. I finished the port side but was losing my fine motor control and focus so I went over to teh Abrams for some light relief. The next task is folding tiny platforms and ladders for catwalk access from the flight deck - that are a depressing number of them too.😄

A day in tiny world today. I completed the catwalk access ladders that are set at intervals around the edge of teh flight deck. The parts are tiny making a small platform and a short ladder - repeat ten times

The end result is barely visible but they are there on the real ship so....

RIMG0643.JPG.a69b1cfad91dfa5bdbd28ab1fc080574.JPG

I also tidied up the braces under the platforms. Next I plan to touch up paint before moving onto the last parts like the boat davits and a couple of radar domes and platforms before the dreaded netting.

Thanks for looking in

Have a great weekend everyone

Back again after some days of annoying activity in the real world, renewing house insurance and the 2021 income tax return. PE never looked so good!

There are two radar platforms that mount on the hull and are made up of six pieces.

867607520_RIMG0655(1280x720).jpg.1a200428da74cbf0b9a5c051dc2de6d5.jpg

The instructions has you making up teh assembly and installing it as a complete item. That sounded quite good until I realised that this would mean getting six holes and a tab perfectly aligned. Not a a chance so I used medium CA glue and installed the platform and dome and then the braces and while the glue was soft moved each piece into final place.

1059299958_RIMG0658(1280x720).jpg.314366090d567eb27a83feb004e8d7b3.jpg

A big moment - I added the island. It seemed that the hull was going to get very fragile with the nets installed and getting the island down snug might involve a bit of force so I put it on. It went down quite nicely and suddenly this is starting to look like a ship. With the island on I added the deck railings behind it on the starboard side. Some very small pieces

Next step will be to do a bit more touching up - and straighten that aft mast top platform

  • 4 weeks later...

Sorry about the hiatus in progress. I've been back to Blighty for thed last three weeks visiting my dad and other family after a covid driven two year absence. The family was priority so I didn't get out and about as much as I had hoped but I had a great time. I did take my 96 year old dad out to the National Arboretum and we spent four hours walking about and making our usual stop at the Parachute Regiment memorial (his wartime mob),

85115671_IMG_1580(960x1280).thumb.jpg.a23f4f0f7d697adee49ea89ea09f62ec.jpg

The cafe for coffee and homemade cakes afterwards was also a favourite. We have been there a number of times and still haven't seen a lot of the monuments. Great place.

So back home and  jet lagged it looks like everyone has been doing some marvelous work. I have so much to catch up on.

After fending off my attention starved cats I did manage to spend some time on the next part of the Wasp build; fitting the life raft containers. My photos show significant changes from the kit layout to the ship configuration in 2013. Thankfully this meant I needed less containers rather than more. In 2013 the ship had considerably fewer containers fitted. After a lot of time studying the photos the containers were installed. The starboard side is 100% correct but the angles of some of the photos of the starboard side mke placement a bit obscure but I think its very close now.

1057034592_RIMG0673(1280x782).jpg.7356aa4279eadac6f4b38e1c399bec6f.jpg

I gave the containers a white wash to make them a little more visible. In real life they are a light grey but they looked a bit formless with just the grey coat.
