USS Wasp LHD-1 by king derelict - FINISHED - HobbyBoss - 1/700 - PLASTIC

Recommended Posts

I worked on the last major part of the build today; the netting. I was not looking forward to trying to add the PE parts edge on to the hull but in the event it went reasonably well. CA glue all the way because i needed the fast grip to stop the netting sagging before the glue dried. Lining up the parts around the elevators was fiddly but it came out quite nicely. The netting attaches with small tabs rather than along the length of the part - hence the CA glue. The nettings are a vast simplification of the real ones but they are better than not having any and as after market parts i am not sure how you could attach them to the hull in a more realistic manner.  Probably a project for a 1/350 model.

Slowly it all came together and all the netting was installed.

The elevators were fiddly and adding the PE ordinance disposal chute was a bit of a breath holder

Apart from the odd sape ladder and door and a set of ordinance disposal chutes to add to the flight deck the PE frets are now empty. Except for a last piece of railing. The instructions would have you install it across the flight deck at the bows but thats not a normal configuration on a flight deck.

And really not a good idea

A lot of small tasks now. I need to add the 50 cal guns but they were wrapped up in covers during the flight testing so I need to mould some putty around the parts to resemble that. Weathering and then helos, jets and vehicles need to be finished. Still some more fun to be had but its getting fragile to work on now.

Thanks for looking in

Looks superb, Alan.   I think the .50's would always be covered except during firing practice or actual use.  However, with a model, we do often cross the lines of reality so there's really no need to cover them.

Down in the detail today. Touching up the paint on the PE (and trying not to knock anything off). I added the yellow PE ordinance disposal chutes. The kit is wrong relative to the 2013 configuration but the photos sorted it out. The booms were added too.

I just need to finish the 50 cals and that's the ship done apart from weathering. I then need to work up the vehicles and the aircraft.

I'm leaning more towards a seascape to display it and its own case.

Thanks for looking in. Have a great weekend everyone

Looking great, I want to build one of these in 1/350 at some stage

Thank you Greg. Its pushed my abilities but I like how its coming out. In 1/350 I think you could create a gem. The netting would be much nicer and the aircraft would be less clunky although I do like the 1/700 F-35Bs

I spent quite a bit of time today cleaning up the details on the ship. Chasing around the PE painting over the little gleams of brass from handling damage. And then going around it again as the light catches new areas.

I painted and added washes to the fork trucks, tugs, fire trucks and the crane. They still need a bit of detail and some cleaning up but I placed them just to see if they were somewhat acceptable. The SAR helo with folded rotors is also parked in its probable final spot.

I painted the F-35Bs - the shortest spray session versus cleaning the air brush but they look good and some detail is getting added.

318820373_RIMG0713(1280x720).jpg.eaaffd250bc41e2d4e5a13568b0ce43f.jpg

I added some black wash to the hull to bring out some of the detail and then a rust wash where the phoptos show it. I think I need a bit more work to darken it in a few places. The Vallejo rust wash is very light.

The GSE gear (tow tractors and cranes) look fantastic. Wasn’t sure about your choice of color for the jets. They are Marines and I thought I saw a picture on your thread that shows they are Marine aviation grey.

Thank you Dave. I drove myself crazy today trying to put the red stripes on the crash truck.😆

The two jets are two of the flight test fleet from NAS Patuxent River,MD and they seem a shade darker than the regular USMC grey. I'll have to look at the photos from the USS America LHA6 deployment which had a mix of flight test and fleet aircraft on board. It may all be my eyesight.

The two F-35B have been painted and the decals added. I also finished the SH-60s and added their tiny decals.

The layout I had decided on had test aircraft BF-1 on the 400 foot mark for take off and BF-5 the second jet on the elevator. A spare SH-60 is up by the island and another is forward of the island. A further SH-60 is presumed already airborne on SAR duty.

That leaves me with a spare SH-60 and a V-22 that really don't look appropriate on the deck so I have left them off.

Another round of PE touch up was completed and then a matt coat. This completes the ship and I will now start on the sea scape. I hope its not inappropriate but if anyone has a use for a 1/700 scale Marines expeditionary set please drop me a line and I'll be happy to mail it out. I hate to throw it out but I don't see a need for it. It has

Combat Vehicles

2 x M1A1 Abrams 2 x M60A3 2 x AAV-7 2 x M1097 Humvee Shelter Carriers 2 x M1114 Humvees 2 x M198 towed artillery
2 x LAV-25 2 x MTVR trucks
Landing Craft

2 x LCAC 2 x LCU
Aircraft

2 x AH-1W Cobra 4 x AV-8B Harrier II 4 x CH-46 Sea Knight 4 x MV-22 Osprey 4 x CH-53E Sea Stallion

So a rather indulgent photo set to finish the ship work

Jets look GREAT! But you need to put the corrosion control team on report…. They painted BF-1’s nose wheel and tire gray. 😆

For those not familiar… in the Navy and Corps Aviation, the “corrosion control” shop does all the corrosion protection and painting of the aircraft while at sea and at home. The harsh salt air and water environment means constant cleaning, inspection, and refinishing of areas that might be affected by even the smallest hint of corrosion.

REALLY nice Alan. There are many a Marine Corps Squadron that would proudly display this in the “ready room”, especially the test squadron. Most excellent work! 👍😀

Thank you very much Dave for all those kind words. I have really enjoyed building this model and its been a special experience to build a ship that I have been on board on deployment. That gives a special desire to try to get it as right as possible. I would love to donate it to VX23 Test and Evaluation at NAWC Patuxent River

Thank you for pointing out the grey wheel - I somehow only painted one side and it was the wrong one. That also drew my attention to the hair on the wing so that has also been dealt with

Thank you very much OC. I'm very pleased with how she came out. I was a bit daunted when I started but taking it a step at a time it has been a very enjoyable build. It's taught me that I need to do more research and not assume the kit is always correct.

To me this came out nicely enough to make a seascape and display case rather than stick her in with the rest of the fleet

I started the seascape by cutting a base front a piece of extruded polystyrene insulating board. I used the lower hull piece to mark out the position of the ship

1856736356_RIMG0805(1280x720).jpg.cd8dbba914c5acd7e7740a139d07b658.jpg

I then used PVA glue to add a layer of crumpled foil to create some depth and random wave patterns

497330063_RIMG0807(1280x720).jpg.8b06cb7a4bb05df0faf42d775e827cb9.jpg

I will add a layer of PVA glue to soften the sharp edges and then some toilet paper in places soaked in a water and white glue mix to define the wake and bow wave.

The objective is to produce a nice easy sea well within the initial operational envelope.

Not this sort of thing

Although I would like to try this with a small destroyer at some point.

Slow progress waiting for glue to dry.

I added a layer of diluted white glue and also some toilet paper where I need to form  bow waves and wake.

would suggest several layers of gesso.

Alan, when I did my waterline diorama, after gluing the crinkled foil pieces on the board, I then took a sheet of aluminum foil and covered the entire surface.  That helped soften the sharp edges of the crinkled foil.  I’d do that before the gesso, and then use gesso if you need more softening.

I did that before too with the Montrose seascape. I wanted to try something different this time with a much calmer sea. I think it might cost me a lot of gesso though.

The first coat of gesso showed up some lines where the pieces of foil overlapped so I corrected that with some diluted glue and toilet paper and when dry added a second coat of gesso. That looks good now and has knocked most of the sharpness off the crumpled foil 2125720104_RIMG0818(1280x720).jpg.5bf253e12a09373b4d8bbc90d6c34319.jpg

This morning I started colouring the sea. I'm aiming for a dark deep ocean look. Something similar to this

306035639_130824-N-AN499-348(853x1280).thumb.jpg.1e17b0139b4323d36486d7ad94bdac3e.jpg

The first colour was a coat of navy blue and while it was wet I worked some black into the troughs. I'll let it dry before deciding if anything neeeds to be lightened and also adding the wake and bow wave

I ordered the display case pieces from TAP Plastics on Saturday. The pieces were cut and packaged for shipment the same day and the parcel arrived today. They are a great resource; their prices seem to be holding and they turn orders around very quickly. They also have an interesting range of acrylic rods and tubes, cubes and spheres that you just know with be useful for somethingB)

I started gluing the case up but found I don't have large enough clamps to hold the top piece in place while gluing so its off to Harbor Freight.
