John,

Nice work on the sails, and nice attention to details.

Isn't it interesting how a simple triangular sail with just a halliard, two sheets and a tack can turn into a plethora of blocks, hooks, lines fairleads, pins and cleats - not to mention the hanks. Oh yes - the downhauls with even more of the same!

Thanks for noticing the detail Phil. I appreciate your comments. There certainly is a lot of detail. 🧐 I know I’m not getting it all perfect, but she is looking good. 😊

More interesting still is the crew coordination it takes to work the rigging to hoist the sails then sail the vessel. It was certainly fascinating to watch the Bluenose II crew on our short cruise on her last summer. It helps to understand how this stuff works.

Cheers 🍻

Nice work, John!  Hard to get into those small spaces!  Lots of pics with tweezers in the camera shot!  Excellent!

I'm getting my lower shrouds in now.  Wish I was as far as you, but then I keep telling myself I am in no particular hurry... take it slow!

John,

Good progress! The model looks good with the sails. I will say again that you are fortunate to be able to visit the vessel and see the way the real thing is rigged.

I have been waiting to see how you rigged the gaff sails. Since these sails  are on the centerline and at the bottom of the masts - basically inside all the other rigging - I think I will rig them first, even before I put the ratlines on the shrouds. The fewer lines in the way while I am fiddling with the hoops and sails the better!

In particular, I noticed that you pre-rigged the ties to the mast hoops. I am thinking about how I will tie the sails to the hoops. While I have tried to follow the rigging techniques shown in the books for most of the rigging, for the hoops I think I will just use a simple single loop and knot.

Greg,  No deadlines… That’s what makes it an awesome experience. Looks like I’ll hit two years on this one. But then I work on more than one at a time, so it’s really hard to say how long it really takes. But then it doesn’t really matter, does it. 😜

Phil, Those hoop ties were very tedious and took a couple of hours, just for the Fore Sail. In hind site I think it may have been better to rig the sails on the hoops prior to setting the masts. However it is what it is now. 😆

One method that works for me:

I rig the throat and peak gaff halyard and topping lift with the mast and boom and gaff laying flat on a table off the boat. Then I place the sail and tie the mast hoops and rig the sails to the boom and gaff.  Makes it so much easier. Everything stays in place while tieing and running lines. Then I'll set the masts with temporary shrouds until I get all running rigging close to the masts done. Only then do I do the stays and shrouds.  That way I have much less work inward of the shrouds.

That sounds like a great idea. 👍

I’ll have to give that a try on the next one.

Sails are looking really good, John!  Soooooo close to being done! 🏆

Not sure I saw it in any of your recent pictures, John.  When you get to actually rigging, for instance, your main gaff and main boom (with sail) to the mast, what are you using to hold them up in place while you connect to the mast?

Again, great work, sir!

Gregg

Thanks Gregg,

As for holding the Gaff in place while tying the Hoops, I simply use some rigging from the Gaff to the top mast to temporarily hold it up then I rig the peak halyards after the hoops are connected.

Almost done… Here’s my final punch list.

1. Baggy Wrinkles

2. 1921 Canadian Flag w/halyard on Main Gaff

3. 1921 Nova Scotia Flag w/halyard on Main Top Mast

The drawings show a Flag Halyard on the Fore Top Mast. I’m not sure what goes there. Any ideas?

Is there anything I have missed?

Cheers 🍻
