fantastic metal work and attention to detail.

Well said Papa!

Hi John

She continues to be a lovely build, kudos.  I never realized Bluenose had pear shaped deadeyes combined with round ones.   I cannot find plans or photos of Bluenose or any other vessel ever having that combination.  Very interesting.

Thanks Alan for the kudos…

I’m thinking I may have oversized the lower deadeyes and am considering a redo. Your thoughts…

Thanks

Here is a couple of photos from the original Bluenose and the replica Bluenose II…

Rat lines continued…

OK, I’ve decided not to let OCD get the best of me and let well enough alone on the deadeyes. I did start over on the rat lines.

Onwards … Cheers 🍻

Excellent work as always John.

Sometimes I wonder what the point is of planking a hull that is smoothed to look like a solid hull and then painted.  Seems like one has gone to a lot of hard work that is then hidden from view.

Thank you Ron… I think the same, until I work on a solid hull. The carving is so much harder to make smooth. 😆

Rat Lines continued…

IMG_3282.thumb.jpeg.0a236eb12db8f9962c0db55272d84591.jpeg

I chose to place the rat lines across three of the four shroud lines. Each rat line starts with a half hitch on the first line.

IMG_3283.thumb.jpeg.f702f3d64d4a7222d6ac26c5aa0363f7.jpeg
I then verify the distance. (5-6 mm)

IMG_3285.thumb.jpeg.1aa19252e660d6029a42cfddca6e0d0d.jpeg
I then place a tiny drop of CA glue on the half hitch knot. Using a paper towel I immediately wick of the excess glue.

IMG_3286.thumb.jpeg.31f760d3c255df0c684084c46f4252ab.jpeg
I then complete the series of two more knots across the shroud.

IMG_3338.thumb.jpeg.d0d38fe2e4aff18461d8c64024fb3445.jpeg
We fast forward to the top, where it really gets tough. 😬

IMG_3339.thumb.jpeg.35769cbe96125f0fff6447a54a741206.jpeg
I use nail clippers to trim each line, taking care not to clip the shroud. There are Fifty rat lines per shroud, that’s 100 tails to clip. Four sets of shrouds means I will have 400 clippings to clip on 200 rat lines. But who’s counting? 😆

IMG_3341.thumb.jpeg.52f9993d30461fcfcc649d445bf7682e.jpegIMG_3340.thumb.jpeg.4e55a07c27d4c4897229d9f930bc3dd2.jpeg
1 of 4 should completed…

Onwards 🍻

Ummm, apparently you were!!  🤣🤣

Nice work on shrouds, John!  I am not a knot expert, but is there a discernable difference in strength and appearance between a half hitch and clove hitch?  As I recall on my Ballahoo, I used clove hitches on the rat lines, and used clove hitches again when I tied the stirrups to the footropes on the Bluenose bowsprit.  At this scale, probably makes little difference.  Either method, as you pointed out, is being secured by a touch of CA glue, anyways.

Looking great overall, John! Envious of how far you have gotten so well.  Carry on, sir! 👍

Thanks Ron…

I’m plugging along, rat lines are one of my least favorite tasks. They just seem to take forever. Very tedious! 😜

The half hitch is much simpler than the clove hitch and the knot is smaller. As you said, the glue holds it in place.

Maybe it’s “inspired laziness” as Nic puts it. 😆 It is much easier and the deference is not noticeable.

John,

I'm sure you are glad that is done! One down and one to go.

I am also working on rigging at this time, and it is pretty complex and tedious work. I am saving the ratlines until after everything else is rigged.

It sure is looking good, could you tell me the name of the color that you painted the lower hull I know its red but what  which manufacturer that sort of thing ?. I inherited  a billings Bluenose, it is half finished, but I need to repaint it, it's gold right now but I need to fix it up and would like to paint it like yours . I am starting a journal for this ship and will write it down right away lol.I know when I finally get around to  finishing it I will be looking at this log lots. Thanks so much.

Hi Bob!  No doubt John's Bluenose has been turning out great from the get-go, which is why I've been following his progress (and stealing ideas!) for a long time.  Yours looks equally as magnificent! Congrats!

For alternative options to the hull color, on my Bluenose hull, I used Liquitex Basics Acrylic Alizarin Crimson Hue Permanent (brushed on with multiple coats) and sealed with Minwax Polycrylic Crystal Clear Topcoat.  I was really pleased with the outcome.

Turnbuckles…

IMG_3694.thumb.jpeg.22aafebf2bf8294fd8400b9ef0bd828b.jpeg
I used 1/16” OD Aluminum tubing and copper wire to build dummy turnbuckles. There is no mention of turnbuckles in the instructions. I wanted to try to add this detail and tried to get them small enough to be of proper scale. 😆

Used needle file to cut both sides of tubing.

Used Copper wire to fit through the tubing.

Excellent work on the turnbuckles, John!  My $0.02 would be either aluminum or a brass-like gold.  For my bowsprit turnbuckles, I purchased some "pre-made" ones that turned out... ok.  But, now that I have a mill machine, I believe I could make some even better like yours here.  And all of the tubing that I have is brass.  Hmmm...  I think there are some more turnbuckles higher in the rigging, isn't there?

Yep… I believe the 1921 Bluenose would have had galvanized steel. At 1/16” OD it might be a bit over scale, but I think it looks good. I’ll have to search out the detail to find out how many more I will need to make up.

Just did another quick scan of Sheet 6 - Rigging Details, and I was probably thinking of the numerous shackles, not turnbuckles.

Continued great work, John! 👍
