1921 Bluenose by John Ruy - Model Shipways Kit No. MS2130 - 1/64 scale - Canadian Fishing Schooner

Recommended Posts

John,

I did the same "last minute" review of deck fittings and belaying points prior to starting rigging - and like you I found a bunch of things I overlooked! And I found an error in my belaying plan that just happened to use the last two unused belaying pins on the fore mast fife rail. Still, I'm pretty sure I will discover yet another missing belaying point before I am done!

I have had spotty results with Brass Black also. I wash with soapy (dish soap) water and rinse after soldering to remove water soluble flux. Then I wash with acetone to remove any resin flux, oils, etc. After that I clean/etch with white vinegar (dilute acetic acid) for a while, then wash again to remove the vinegar. Still I have had spots that just didn't blacken.

However, a good scrubbing with the wire brush seems to improve the blackening. I suspect the irregular results may be varying hardness due to annealing the brass while working it and heating with soldering. This might cause the different parts of the metal to react at different rates to the Brass Black. Brushing cleans oxides off and removes excess solder and whatever else is on the metal surface, and it gives the surface a but of "tooth."

I also use flat black enamel paint to touch up spots (Model Master Flat Black FS37038).

Good looking out, pre-rigging, John!  Always nice to spot those items now rather than a "how am I going to get that in there now?" moment later!  Already found a few of those on mine as I progress but will do the same check when I get to your point in the build, as well.  Looking forward to watching your rigging success.

Gregg

Yes - the Santa Claus approach (making a list and checking it twice) is to be advised at this point - I definitely found that I'd missed a couple of things that it would have been better to add earlier at this stage - the rig is shaping up for you now, though John! Looks great - can't wait to see the next phase

Thanks Phil,

I have found your suggestion of wire brushing with the dremel tool and a rinse in acetone has improved my blackening process.  I did discover that an over stay in the blackening solution actually scales the black off the brass and copper.  10-15 seconds after a good bath in Acetone has produced good results for me.

Now I'm going to have to review my miscellaneous rigging hardware placement.  I am sure I missed the eyes between the shrouds, and some of the other details may be a bit week.  A great reminder to keep checking everything!

Booms and Gaffs…

IMG_2884.thumb.jpeg.b1f799badbce7650e36a999000266a27.jpeg

Dowels cut to length…  Lots of sanding needed to shape the dowels.

Note from instructions:

Spar tapers: Fishing schooners are a little different from other ships. Notice on the plans that the forward side of masts, lower side of gaffs and bowsprit, and top side of booms is a straight line. This is done to better match the sail or position mast hoops. All other faces are tapered.
To avoid confusion, identify the straight side on each spar with a pencil mark at both ends. Taper the dowel with a file. Or, lightly slice it with a hobby blade or small plane, then sand to its final shape. Using a lathe or electric drill to taper these dowels doesn’t work due to the straight edge.

Close enough… Rinse and repeat for the remaining Booms and Gaffs.

Looking great, John! Still totally envious of your superb soldering work!  I am going to try a different soldering method when I get to that point,  Hope I do as well as you!

I'm finishing my dories and waiting on a few things, so have just started trying to shape my bowsprit.  Good to see your mast shaping, as well!

Great job! Carry on!

Looking good, John!  I broke one of the cross trees as well when I pulled the shroud too tight ☹️.  I should have added the blocks, like you did, before I mounted the masts.  -Tim

Looking very good, John!  Wow, you must have had the lines pretty taut for a deadeye to snap like that!  Awesome work, though!  Will be referring to all of this when I get this far.... someday!  Carry on!

Thanks Greg… Not tight at all. I May have cracked it with a reamer, cleaning the holes. I just hope I have an extra, it would not be fun making one from scratch. 😬

Ouch! And ouch again!!

I definitely would have had a panic moment when the crosstree broke!

In previous builds I breathed a sign of relief when all the lower shrouds were in, the masts were vertical, and the upper deadeyes all lined up evenly spaced.

Setting the Main Mast…

I came across this Discussion on Stepping the mast. Many thanks to @HardeeHarHar for starting this thread, it was perfect timing for my next task. Many good ideas, from which I devised the following process.

On my last couple of builds I have avoided glueing the mast when first step them. Two things here: 1-The mast can be removed to work on the details and 2- It allows the Plumb and Rake of each mast to be set by the rigging. The following process is my take away from our discussions.
IMG_3169.thumb.jpeg.ecd7e871596b5279dd5bfb32cdaed1d3.jpeg

Using a Protractor I determined the rake of the mast.
IMG_3170.thumb.jpeg.d9b693cfa2df1017d0912086213b2208.jpegIMG_3171.thumb.jpeg.d6058e2e501260cef33b38f37ba49e90.jpeg
I then measured the distances to the mast from the edge of the drawing ✍️

IMG_3172.thumb.jpeg.21835b764e2e0084bb05cd484fb99c38.jpeg

I then verified my build board to be level.
IMG_3173.thumb.jpeg.dcc5b3a28c1b90705f766682f08fc9c4.jpeg

image.thumb.jpg.8ffb36f27e28e503445b4c1b5c5423f3.jpg

I used wedges under my base to compensate for the mounting.
IMG_3167.thumb.jpeg.635f4438eb33f08afd45c968d3481bc0.jpegIMG_3166.thumb.jpeg.a1626297bf6d85a4dbad7ee1544928e7.jpeg

I hung a home made Plumb Bob from the Throat Halliard Eye to the aft of the Trestle Tree.

IMG_3168.thumb.jpeg.27c3a66c64851ab8e67f31eb6b54e401.jpeg

Compensated the 4mm distance at the top. I used two temporary stays to adjust the rake and adjusted the port and starboard shrouds for the Plumb.
IMG_3174.thumb.jpeg.f927b771fd3631c1cf51ed69fd58f035.jpeg
Main Mast is now set to add stays and Shrouds. The only thing I would do different is set the Fore Mast first. I’ll have to that before adding the permanent Main Stays.

Cheers 🍻

Looking good!  A lot of careful work here with protractors, levels, plumb bobs.  I'm more of an eyeball it and that's close enough type. :)

And seems like a wise move to add the lines to the mast hoops ahead of time, should make attaching sails easier.  But it seems you only did that on the main mast.  Is there a reason or did you just not think of that idea in time for the fore mast?

No, I forgot to tie those on just now. Didn’t notice until you said something. 😬 It’s a lot easier, I’m glad you noticed before I started the shrouds. All I’ll need to do is pull the temporary shrouds and lift the mast to finish up the ties. Another reason for not glue the masts in place.

Thanks for noticing…

BTW… Yes it seems like a lot, but it makes the eyeballing 👁️ feel better. LOL 😆
