Just did another quick scan of Sheet 6 - Rigging Details, and I was probably thinking of the numerous shackles, not turnbuckles.

Continued great work, John! 👍

Thanks again Greg, I did the same, looks like 6 total all on the Bow Sprit rigging. I also looked up Galvanizing, invented in the late 1800s, so I’m pretty sure the turnbuckles would be galvanized to deter rusting. I’ll dab a bit of aluminum paint on the copper eyelets and I’ll be all set. I probably need to paint all of the belaying pins as well. 😆

Carefully trace all sails from drawings.

IMG_3799.thumb.jpeg.a1fa25a5b6616b1ab9efc55312cbe710.jpeg
Cut out sail leaving 1/4” to fold over the edge. I use a muslin material purchased at a fabric store. The Kit supplied sail cloth is usually too heavy.

Fold the 1/4” edge seam and iron it flat for sewing.

Edge seams sewn 1/8” from the edge.

Trim the under side, fray check the fabric edges and iron out flat.

Sew seams including those for reef points.

Fantastic sewing skills on display!  :imNotWorthy:

Thank you, Glen… learned everything I know from the Admiral. I had to, she would not sew my sails for me. She doesn’t do my ironing either. 😆

I now have my own sewing machine, all it cost me was a new upgraded machine for the Admiral. LOL

Kudos to you for  the very very nice work on the sails!   I am not a fan of cloth sails as they will never be to scale at our most common scales but your sails are far and away the best ones I have seen in a long long time.  Do you think a very high TC cloth (600 or more) would work as well as what you used, using your sewing methods?

Again, great work!

Allan

PLEASE take 30 SECONDS and sign up for the epic Nelson/Trafalgar project if you would like to see it made into a TV series.   Click on http://trafalgar.tv   There is no cost other than the 30 seconds of your time.  THANK YOU

Thanks Allan, I’m not sure about the high thread count material? I’ll have look into that.

The sails, like the rest of the model, are really looking great!   For some reason, I feel like sails really belong on a model with fore-and-aft rigged sails.  They really add to the model without obscuring the view of the rest of the model as much as square sails.

Sails look great, John!  I’m working on the jib sails now. Was planning to use some split rings I bought locally for attachment of the sails to the stays, but they were stainless and couldn’t be blackened. Waiting on some brass rings from Model Expo.

Tim,

Thanks for your comment. I usually use split rings but found them to be too out of scale.

Oh cool!  Mine are "only" 2mm tips!  And, according to their website, a local JoAnn's here in KC has 1 of those left in stock of the 1.4mm size.  And their website might even be showing a smaller one than that in stock, as well.  ROAD TRIP! 👍🤣

And to follow up on Tim's query, I do like your use of the S-shaped hanks on this Bluenose.  They do look more "scaley".

Excellent work, John!  Jib sails and rigging look great!  And I have to review the snatch blocks.  Not sure I placed those yet!  Thanks for the reminder!

I've been reviewing your prior log posts (primarily around Post #169) regarding your mast placements and stepping.  Finishing up some pre-rigging work on the main boom and then looking at what blocks and pre-rigging is needed on both masts before stepping.  Everything I have read, including your build log here, says to hold off as long as you can and do a lot of block placement off of the ship, but...  torn on whether it's better to place the blocks on the mast where needed and then rig the lines or rig the lines through the blocks off-ship and then attach the blocks.  Did you find either way easier or a better way to do it?

Sorry to take up space on your log with this query, but wanted to comment on your jib sail work while I was already peeking at your prior posts.  Keep up the great work, sir!  👍

Gregg

Thanks for commenting Greg. I appreciate the recognition and encouragement. I don’t mind you asking questions here either, that’s how we get better at what we do. 🧐

As for rigging blocks I do it on and off ship, it really depends on the situation one finds themselves. I don’t think I find any method “easier”. LOL 😆

John,

Nice work on the sails, and nice attention to details.

Isn't it interesting how a simple triangular sail with just a halliard, two sheets and a tack can turn into a plethora of blocks, hooks, lines fairleads, pins and cleats - not to mention the hanks. Oh yes - the downhauls with even more of the same!
