ECK Posted January 26, 2023 Share #1 Posted January 26, 2023 Having just finished the Duchess of Kingston and waiting for my HMS Indefatigable to ship, i figured I have 6 weeks or s so I decided to start HMS Swan that I bought for Christmas as it was on sale. Could not help myself and got to work. ccoyle Posted January 27, 2023 Share #2 Posted January 27, 2023 I took the liberty of changing your build log title to Pegasus based on the assumption that you will build this Swan-class vessel as the subject depicted by the kit -- unless, of course, you plan to actually build the model as Swan, in which case you will need to make some cosmetic changes. Unfortunately it was lost in the 2013 system crash, though i do have a photo gallery for it now posted. I write logs offline and keep backupsthese days. This is a great model, you’ll enjoy building it. Though you’re a long way from it, researching and installing the rigging was my favorite part. ECK Posted January 29, 2023 Author Share #8 Posted January 29, 2023 So going onward. I noticed they did not make the opening for the hatch leading to the lower deck so I opened it . The plans also did not plank the central section until later which ruins the flow. Will do it that way (I believe it is what Chris Watton recommended as the "designer" mentioned in the instructions) rather than at the gun ports. Then the whale should be easy to place. I used carpenter's glue and pins to give me time to position it properly (as the pins will be covered by the whale holes not an issue). Now I can start planking using cyano glue. This is often seen and I realize it is a kit thing but it is a pet peeve and I often wonder why there only a couple kit makers that show how to properly plank a hull. For future builds you might want to study the planking tutorial here at MSW in the articles databased by David Antscherl and the four part You Tube video by Chuck Passaro on how to duplicate realistic planking. The pic below shows the difference between what many kit instructions yield and realistic planking where the planks end at the rabbet. The only exception would be if a drop strake is needed. If the hull is to be painted or coppered of course that pretty much covers any differences. Note that the wales tapered to the same thickness as the surrounding planking as they approach the rabbet. A lot is self satisfaction of knowing what lies beneath. I take comfort that when I look at the pictures in the build manual for the Indefatigable, similar issues can be seen. Same for me...i also didn't bother to much about the planking beneath the copper...only the planks above have to look crisp in my opinion. But when you need to practice planking then it would be a good opportunity to do all planking perfect. You are going fast! Now I don't have to turn it over any more. Although not in the instructions, I pinned all the rudder pintles. Also received an email that the Indefatigable kit I ordered is finally on the way. It will be a major temptation to start it but I will likely finish Pegasus first and then relish the time working on Indy. If you want to add a degree of authenticity the rudder straps and pintles on copper hulls were made of a cuprous alloy, iron doesn't work with copper. Painting them a coppery/bronze colour would be more accurate. B.E. Interesting issue is that plans have side windows above main wale But pictures on box has it overlapping the wale The usual issue of variances. Mine looks to be slightly over the wale. Will need to build it up to avoid cutting into the wale. The box picture also missing a decoration in the plan picture.
