Thank you all for the good wishes re my eyes. The first one is bing replaced on Monday so I am trying to make a bit of progress before I am banned from the workshop. They do one eye then the other after 4 weeks presumably to make sure the first one works before attempting the second. Anyway I have to avoid housework / shedwork for 2 weeks after each replacement. My wife doesn't trust me to be sensible so I expect to be under close supervision for a while.

Hi Keith,

you`d better lock the door of your workshop before eye-surgery and keep it locked until you`re recovered.

If you don`t, then your wife might enter the room to continue the steam yacht build.

And you`ll become unemployed or have to do housework. Change of roles ☺️

Michael - unfortunately not possible, banned from any activities which involve dust or spray - Including showering! May need to spend a lot of time in the playroom.

Actually, the most likely thing about your wife and your workshop is if left unattended for any length of time every horizontal surface will be piled with her stuff.  It’s what a female secretary in our office would have called GSB- Gender Specific Behavior!  😆

Thank you all for taking an interest in my minor operation. I decided to make hay while the sun shines so I cut some wood

 

I printed and cut out the frame templates and then glued them to the 1/8" birch ply sheets. I glue them using Pritt Stick which I find adequately secures the paper while making removal acceptably easy. The sheets are 12" x 48". I did a few arrangements to try and minimise the wastage. There are 41 frames plus the stern keel piece. I didn't print the bow keel piece because my short term memory failed.

I then separated all the frames using the hand held jig saw. 

So now I have 42 pieces of wood ready for the scroll saw. I get to use the scroll saw in anger about every 4 years and I have to go through the learning curve each time. It isn't worth making a start however because all the lines a fuzzy. Hopefully they will become much clearer in due course.

 

Tomorrow my daughter is taking me Christmas shopping to ensure that Santa has an adequate pile my wife. Hopefully I will buy the right things and as a result I will make it through to the New Year without too much grief.

my stepdaughter shops for me for her mother which thrills my wife as she knows that she is going to like what ever Nicole buys for her,  Thst somewhat gets me off the hook although I am responsible for at least 1gift on my own.🫤🫤🫤

Don't buy bathroom scales. About 40 years ago I bought some for Christmas and the divorce proceedings went a long way before she forgave me! Every time I go out to buy her a present she reminds me of the experience.

I see you`re gonna do it in the approved handcraft way (hand held jig saw) etc. I`m myself 75 years now and I still love scratch-building by doing the frames in this way.

Will stay tuned...  I wish you much fun in building the lovely Cangarda

Nils - the scroll saw is powered. I'm not dedicated enough to do 41 frames by hand.

Tom - if you are referring to the keel slots I think I may cut them on the Byrnes saw not on the mill as i did with Altair. The slots will be much narrower on Cangarda. 1/8" on Cangarda, 1/4" on Altair.

Nice preliminary work for Cangarda, Keith!  Such a shame that you won't be able to help out with the cleaning and other household chores for a full eight weeks.  I'm sure you're all broken-up about that.  Best of luck with the eye surgeries.

Keith, I just found your post and I am hooked. These yachts represent the best looking boats of the transition between sail and steam. I will be following you and wish the best on your surgery.

So that is one eye done. It turns out that the world is incredibly blue and bright. I have spent the last few hours turning the contrast and brightness down on all the TV, computer and phone screens. If I look through only my old eye all the blues have a distinctly yellow appearance a cross between colour and sepia tone photographs, while my new eye delivers such strong colour contrast its almost like a laser beam bing fired into my retina. Closing and opening each eye in turn produces incredibly different images. The focus isn't all that precise at the moment but I am told this will come over the next couple of days. So far so good.

 

P.S i haven't looked in the mirror yet or studied the wife. The dog however is looking very cute.

Great news - either that or you've been taking the wrong tablets. There's a pixture of my father stuck on my bathroom mirror. Take my advice, don't look.

Good to hear the first one went well mate; best wishes for a successful second  op.  Watch out though, the improved clarity may show some things you would prefer not to see (like wrinkles etc)

Glad to read that all is going well, Keith. A friend's Admiral recently had cataracts removed. She was quite indignant at the sight of her wrinkles in the mirror. She is 86.

I'm really glad to hear you are recovering well. My eye doctor says cataract surgery is in my future in about 10 years.

 

Last year I had growths called pterygiums removed from both eyes (too much UV exposure from hiking) - six months apart. They cut out chunks 1/4 inch (5 mm) diameter from the eyes and I never had any discomfort! I took some ibuprophen the evening after the surgeries just in case, but it wasn't needed. Everything mostly healed up in two weeks, and my eyesight was improved greatly.

 

How can they cut on the eye like that without causing discomfort?

Yes it's quite amazing isn't it Phil. I felt sight discomfort at times during the operation but no real pain. I guess the eyes don't have many nerves to register the pain. Before the operation my biggest worry was the thought of seeing the scalpel heading toward my eye. No one told me that the operating light would be so strong that I wouldn't see any of the surgical procedure / instruments. All a piece of cake really.

Fortunately I completed my first 2 week dust free sentence on Monday. I don't yet have a date for the second eye so I though I had better "make dust while the sun shines" - well actually it has been bucketing it down for weeks but you know what I mean.

 

And so it was time to power up the scroll saw to test out the good eye.

 

I partially cut out 42 frames. I cut about .020" on the waste side of the hull lines and then sanded back using the disk and spindle sanders. Only the hull outer profiles are cut at this stage. The up-stand for the baseboard isn't cut and neither are the keel slots, deck profiles or the inner profiles. I still have a lot of work to do but at least I made a start. 

 

Christmas is fast approaching and the family are turning up a week tomorrow. So only a few workshop days available until the new year when presumably the second eye will disrupt progress.

Great to hear stage/phase 1 of your op has progressed so well Keith.  Those frames already show the nice lines of the vessel.  Ditto John, very mean, but I know that 'requirement' very well
