Cangarda 1901 by KeithAug - Scale 1:24 - Steam Yacht

Recommended Posts

Ha! It could take some time then...! I had heard that the many tons of lead covering the spire heated up and exapanded on the southerly side warping the fresh green timbers. Its not actually attached to the stonework - just sits there by it's own weight, which is a little disconcerting if you are sitti ng below it in a strong gale. However, I suspect the real reason is that the carpenters had been on a bender to celebrate the end of the hundred years war.

My own house (or it's original version) was built in 1280 and I sometimes think the same carpenters did my roof which has not one single right angle in it!

Andy - I don't think our American friends will be able to compute this information. The west coast cotingent think anything before 1900 is ancient. The roof can't be that bad, it has lasted reasonably well.  Perhaps it is still under guarantee try checking with "Wat the Tyler".

Around here, anything built before 1950 is considered old world and pretty much qualifies as a historic landmark.

Andy, that's absolutely incredible. I hope you don't think me presumptuous by asking if you would mind sharing photos of you home. I dearly love history and homes as old as yours and older fascinate me to no end. Our house was just built in 1869. :)

Just to be clear Wat the Tyler actually was a roof tiler by trade.

Well it's not such a big deal here, I guess, where so many houses date back a way. Happy to share more if you pm me Keith, as don't want to hijack the thread, but here's a picture which I guess is from the 1930's or 40's, and also a previous owner from 1560.

Andy - it's basically one of these. Many brands are available which look basically the same. All manufactured in the same factory in China no doubt.

Another week flashes by with the garden and my wife's birthday taking priority. However I did manage to sneak into the workshop for the odd hour or two.

I continued working on the hull. The final piece of the "rabbet plank" was glued in place.

DSC02902.thumb.JPG.3c0581a73e795f8ef1fd44e467db13a3.JPG

Then it was time to sort out the end of the keel where it meets the skeg. The piece, made a couple of posts ago, was glued in place.

DSC02903.thumb.JPG.7d1cd16397a1d6414b1895ca9e647ae5.JPG

The slot (bottom right above) isn't an error. The slot had to be over long to allow the skeg to side in place horizontally over the prop shaft. The slot will be sorted out once the skeg is glued in place.

The piece at the end of the keel was sanded to shape and is now quite fragile. You may recall I broke the previous piece.

DSC02906.thumb.JPG.fd7eb5b717bfccff5ee5918d3018f4ad.JPG

DSC02907.thumb.JPG.938888b0a386d97e52180a30aa98af6d.JPG

I was jumping about a bit so the next job was to make and attach the rubbing strips. These have a "D" cross section and are 0.1" wide by 0.07" high. Fortunately the rubbing strips are parallel to the upper edge of the compensation plate so I was able to recycle my "port hole marker" to draw the parallel lines where the rubbing strips are mounted.

DSC02908.thumb.JPG.b9471574edb760b3984623bd3591f77e.JPG

I cut a plank 0.1" wide and rounded off the 2 edges with sandpaper to form the "D"

DSC02909.thumb.JPG.90119b947f7d58498fd92db62603e38d.JPG

The edges were slit off .070 thick on the table saw. I then attached the rubbing strips to the hull with masking tape.

DSC02910.thumb.JPG.beda2395999ba86e07e2f74f40f17cf2.JPG

I then ran a bead of CA glue along the edge of the rubbing strip and the capillary action drew it between the touching surfaces.

DSC02913.thumb.JPG.0c3b3a5c2199794f013bfb1216cb1a8a.JPGDSC02914.thumb.JPG.a0ab0ec94a14ac1c263c4ea52d16104b.JPGDSC02915.thumb.JPG.c73130e945689cf4b78e543b0ccd222b.JPG

Next I think I will sort out the keel. At the scale size the keel is circa 0.1" wide by .25" deep and runs the full length of the hull from prow to skeg.

I wonder if any of you have any ideas about what this might be.  As best as I can tell it only exists on the port side.

Hi Keith,

seems to be a fixture of some kind. You have a better view in some of the pictures in page 1 of this log.

Additionally, it seems very similar to the fixtures of a horizontal grating that hangs overboard (as pictured in page 1, but not sure where that grating is located). In any case this extention looks a lot like the hinges of that grating, except that the grating has 2 such points and in your location there is only 1...

Hii Keith, following along with great interest.  Could it possibly be a shore power/utilities connection point?  However, those were usually on the deck/deckhouses but a possibility?

cheers

Keith, it might be an old style blind-spot free (180 degrees) CCTV camera? The image below is current technology.

I’m not sure what you’re pointing to

Sorry Tom I should have been clearer. I'm referring to the oval feature above the rubbing strip.

John - there are other views but all are less distinct than this one.

Is it recessed?

Michael - it seems to stick out, but other than that I can't see much detail.

Roel - I agree it does look like one of those but they are usually attached to the grating itself and not the hull. Also as you say there is only one and it doesn't seem to be positioned adjacent to a gate in the guard rail.

Maybe a rubbing knob

Not sure about that glen. A captain clever enough to ensure that he touched the dock at that particular point would probably be clever enough to avoid the collision.

12 hours ago, BANYAN said:

Seems a bit vulnerable Pat. As you say it would probably be better to have it on deck.

Interesting Keith - but why only on one side?

1 hour ago, yvesvidal said:

It could be a port to fill up a tank: water of fuel.

Yves, they are usually on deck, but anything is possible. It is on the port side but it would be tricky if Cangarda moored on her starboard side.

It doesn't seem to have been present when she was rolled out of the builders yard:- Its a mystery!

Rather a messy picture, but is that a pole attached to it? It might be a false memory but haven't I seen something like this arrangement in another build log, with ships boats being tied to a pole and trailed out to one side (or am I just going mad?).

The picture in the previous post definitely look like a bracket of some type.  And the pole in the above looks like its attached at the same point.  But I don't know what the usage would be.
