Good evening.

I will start new log for 24 pdr french frigate Egyptienne starting new year 2024.

There has been some intensive work ongoing as Im finishing pob bulkheads work from monograph plans.

This is my first ancre build, but hull seem pretty straightforward, yet it is very difficult subject due to intense and  advance carving at stern.

Anyway, I wont go in detail about her history, however, its so little of her here for many reasons. Im fan of napoleoninc era etc. Its important to stress, that this magnificent vessel carried famous rosetta stone from egypt to england alrrady under english flqg as been captured in siege of alexandria and became english afterwards.

designed by Faro, Two vessels were similar. I see one or two logs on her so there will hopefully be a lot to discuss :)

I already started but unusual. backwards so I have most difficult part behind me. I hand carved stern plate on boxwood, and painted black so its different that colorless prototype. you can see slightly simplified ornamentals as those acanthus leaves are beyond my skill. thus even with this omission   I hope I stayed true to

originalIMG_20231217_191658.thumb.jpg.af35e024c5a4744817709ab2c0e61cf6.jpg as well as with female figure with mirror palm trees and pyramids. Floral element below is not yet fyluply completed but almost. Bow elements are verybdifficult but i hope to obtain some machinery in next year or so so I can simplify work. I intend to plank her with boxwood so light tone with black wales. But many to discuss later :).

IMG_20231217_191715.thumb.jpg.d0752d2c3296dc5bc2f82fe0852099e1.jpg

I will apreciate any comment suggestion remark etc...Sure im learing from more experienced builders here, and with experiences I already have.

So excited to enter my first french territory. I count few years until completed, planned full  with rigging and sails.

Good productive week to  everyone and MERRY CHRISTMAS, good health etc...

Vlad

Did you make the CAD drawings yourself or is there some way to get these imported? I have done CAD work in the past, but never been able to get those before.

I found that the counter timbers and dogs legs are not easy to do and take a lot of effort to get right.  Looks like you are on the money there - nice work.

Thank you.

Yes I found it difficult as well. there is probably far more ways to make it more simply or easier it one is building counter jig with curvature bed so legs could be under control, and making it from pear wood without laset cut precision requires utmost effort to maintain accuracy otherwise it gets soon cramped. but it is main structural part so it requires attention. I was finally happy I strenghtened it as much as possible as it required fair amount of sanding for final  correction so it needed to be stiff...but lots lots of work there for me. :)

Transom wings? or whatever those are called.

well, finally little weekend time.

I was thinking what sort of filler to apply ..but, i realised i wouldnt be able to guess curvature without making proper pieces.

Im making these, but had to though out how. Surely its quite easier than pof builders have to endure, but i dont have any sort of mill anyway...after checking against plan its not quite there yet but tweaking along. Thankfully i had to sand off only backside of them. I made jig mimicking center piece where they will be. offset by 2.5 mm according to plan right next to vertical post fastened to center line. they will be secured nicely along centerline as sticking surfqce is quite long.

im still working on them.

It should take no more than week or two until I get bulkheads. Im thrilled waiting.

I little continued on stern...first making planking grove and transom planks.. next massive ornamental piece that attaches to the skeleton.

im not good at scraping but i tried to make- modify  pattern out of comercial one to mimic prototype....photos to say more.

transom will be black but i  intend to leave ornamentals natural boxwood so far. I  should cover it at this stage not to smudge it much. thanks.

Hello, I finished half of hawse timbers kind of ..."mimic'.

its probably overkill for pob, but im satisfied with outcome enough. I cant imagine comfy planking wirhout this structural part. only half yet though , im quite done. firstly I made bulkheads no0 and from there jig for it. I made bulkheads removable from one another, so when finished i will glue those together. and hole for bowsprit of fourse.  thank you for watching etc.

it will take some time to finish second one so i will post afterwards. what do you think? )

started from opposite sides...bowsprit hole 28degrees, and masts resting holes..main mast is going right thru bulkhead so i had to think a bit...

thanks for stopping by.

till next time ...i hope bulkheads will be faired. so far so good though i guess i lowered stern profile 5 mm down though I will see how many problems arises when fairing hull...i intend to measure curvatures with blank plank...

Atta boy!! Nice job making those hawse timbers for the bow, and your fashion pieces in the stern look great too. I am enjoying this blog

thank you. Will see after fairing though, how those turns out. There will be some sanding off I presume. My plan is to reinforce skeleton a bit more with balsa wood and treenail planks with brass but im not there yet. these preparations are crucial. tokorrow i d like to  continue assemblinh all bulkheads and start fairing. cheers.

This is first time i have priviledge to build from boxwood at will and Im quite perplexed how beautiful this wood is not for carving only but for bending as well. its pure joy to work with and I am delighted how helpful this is. So I finished starboard side from wells up. Sharp eye wipll spot my usual sinful things as unnecessary repairs. It was constant pressure on me whether planks would meet upper end correctly, so there it is. After brute thorough  sanding boxwood colors out almost white. im not sure what final treatment  to use for it. tung oil? one can spot not advanced fancy modeling here as cutouts around gunports...

its quite obvious how this shape  differ from english tradition shapes, being fattest at the prow thinning slender aft. and how shallow is foreship curvature. I like most enter of forecaatle opening up outwards of deck providing splash protection. its really modern  cathedral of ships.

as far as moldings, according compendium, streak between double   molding between gunwales and channel strip can be black or yellowˇ I tried to leave it natural not sure if permanently. maybe later on i will paint it black so it will provide one color up down molding shape.   so far i like it this way too. well there will be longer because  as I have worked franatically in this and my fingers need rest. thank you for looking in and any comment  etcetera....

I dont like looking at bare skeleton,  finally this long passage is behind me and part of boat is coming up.   there is now other side to be done. same work same challenge. and now million dollar question. treenail or not :))) ://// hm hm. i guess i will do. i never tried it before.

outward strake shape  is my favorite one.

She's looking sharp and yes, boxwood is a wonderful wood to work with.   As for painting?   It's your choice.  Some builders use little to no paint, others go all out.   I'd wait until you have her planked and then decide.

OH MY Vlad!   you've gone head long into another fantastic build.  You weren't kidding....This build is amazing...your wood working skill is impressive for sure.  And going from drawing to carving and building is just amazing.

I talked to Rich today and I heard from him you were here.   So glad I did.   He is getting back to his article on Glory.

I'm going to follow along here if you don't mind....great work for sure....can't wait for more pics and info.

Good to see you still at work in the shipyard.

Hi! It's Rich @ClipperFan my apologies for the long absence. Life has been a frustrating series of challenging detours. I agree whole heartedly with Rob's @rwiederrich observation about your impressive woodworking craftsmanship on your current L'Egyptienne project.

I have exciting news and need you to message me your email address. May 31st I finally visited Hyland Granby Antiques, Hyannis Port, Cape Cod, MA. There, my wife and I were invited to see and photo the Athene figurehead from Glory of the Seas. I have 68 photos to share with you. Originally, I wanted to post them but haven't been able to get permission from the owner to do that. I sent them by email to Rob and Michael Mjelde and feel you deserve to get them too.

Meanwhile, if you have any more images of your finished model, I'd really like to include them in the second NRJ article which I'm determined to finish and submit soon.

Vlad,

I will enjoy following your L'Égyptienne build immensely. No implied pressure to work on her. As a fellow creative (only with art and words, not yet getting back into modeling, yet never say never on that) I can relate as to how life can give you unexpected detours. I expect you won't mind but I shared your completed McKay clipper Glory of the Seas model pics on your Glory build for everyone to see. I'm already even more impressed with your authentic scratch-building skills on your current project. Finally, by now you should have received all 68 pics from my fascinating, all too short visit to Hyland Granby Antiques to see (and actually touch) "The Lady" the largest surviving relic of McKay's lost last clipper.

Good day.

There has been some progress on Legyptienne after half year of pause.

daunting task of planking is left for rainy days, and got little fed up with monotonous work so ling time ago i did some peculiar wood deck installments, not yet completed with metal parts.

small windlass. this work begs for kind of lathe due to round profile or all parts..Its quite easy with laser cut parts or master some lathe/mill , but I dont have lathe so handwork here with some lathe mimic - wood stuck into drill hole ...:)))

I tried to imirate original and should have made collars wooden ( it would be nicef i guess but I did it with paper mimicking iron collar...

There are very  small wheels half inserted at the bottom of item with rounded collar going inside those. Its very peculiar. i tried to mimic that as well which was brutal .

original was aparently made out of one piece and cardlved detail is so delicate, it must have been work of absolute master . its beyond words...

IMG_20240820_091427.thumb.jpg.d1630c8751671891ceb1cf5e41796927.jpg

IMG_20240820_095703.thumb.jpg.9341e898ca5b43a0067c2ebbf189a953.jpg

first I made I made 8 same parts glued together so those made circle with inner round hole and I catefully "lathed" those by drill spinning and some sanding in speed applied to establish base shape. Then I precarved eight "teeth" and also at the bottom

IMG_20231226_130112.thumb.jpg.da442b34f959920d1a6ec36b34a3fcda.jpgIMG_20231226_130127.thumb.jpg.38c8d1bf8c75dd96f43b9272d3118670.jpgIMG_20231226_132127.thumb.jpg.c5f3d1051d31c230e375088db8d5f32c.jpgIMG_20231226_132136.thumb.jpg.ecda5431acda904bc88032b06baae781.jpgIMG_20231226_140702.thumb.jpg.7801fa2f115a003657cbcf98361498e2.jpg

I made half wheels glyed and rounded tiny halfsticks from one wheel to another.

IMG_20240109_194117.thumb.jpg.a32d2aeb6eb5fd2d51135fc13feccdb5.jpg

not completely satisfied but it will do i guess :)

IMG_20240820_093520.thumb.jpg.203c6fe26a4ac2ec3a332600635a41d0.jpg

after I "got" into bottom of it , Big twin windlss was little easier to make at least half part of it. I still have one to go.

so first i divided rounded stick itno 8 parts and cut 8 same notches. tried to be precise. Its very easy make oval from circle :).

IMG_20231225_130457.thumb.jpg.524176cff02bf6729c89ef6ee6b08da2.jpg

than cut 8 angled timbers glued around and sanded outer part  into circle ..

thers is no machine precision but it doesnt matter here, it will be covered with cap :)
