Duchess of Kingston 1778 by Knocklouder - Vanguard Models - 1/64 - Royal Yacht

Recommended Posts

Hello, for those who don't know me, my name is Bob M.  And I go by the name Knocklouder. And live in Sunny Manitoba,  Canada.  I have been modeling for three years now. I have truly enjoyed and loved every  moment.

Three years ago I join MSW and post my first post on my Santa Maria log. @Ryland Craze was the first to answer answered  followed by the most knowledgeable person l have every meet @Louie da fly, together they showed me were to look what to look for and for the next year and a half I put together the Santa Maria.  I was very happy with it. Thanks you guys so much . SO Then I posted it in the gallery right away. After that I was hooked so I  bought six more models I thought I would like to try. So many infacted  that I was told I couldn't buy any more till I finished the ones I had. So I did. Now I get  to buy a model I really wanted. Over the last three years I have become increasingly aware of Vanguard Models and  @chris watton that I had to get one.

I chose the Duchess of Kingston,  for many reasons,  the looks the kit the designer  the rigging.

I have many interest and want to make this ship to the best of my abilities.  Serving, seizing and tieing the right kind of Knotts. So let's see what I have learned and start my log.

The build will be deadacated to @Gabek and @chris watton they know the reason why,  and they will be forever in my mind and heart. Thank you Gentle  Men.

Let's open the box. Shell we  :)

wow packed with goodies, and fine quality wood, I have never used pear wood before, its beautiful  stuff

I put it all away,  into a box for the wood and two plastic containers for the peices  and rigging.

And this great 80 page understandable  instructions manual 😀. And 13 pages of plans. I made a flip binder so to speak, I made holes in all the tops and put it on a corrugated plastic board. I placed reinforcements rings on both side of the plans. I was going with 5 rings but three proved to be adequate. It works good just flip to the pages you want  then slide it into the desk out of the way. 20240801_194022.thumb.jpg.e9a667c399b5d00f371c19dfa17c5078.jpg

I really want to do this build up right so I peiceed my servo machine back together  and I am  going to study how and what size of rope I need to make the shrouds.  I made a few test peices and need more practice. But I will get there this time.

So with that I am at step 13. And will close the book for now because I will be working on my King of the Mississippi  diorama  for the next little while. I will be very anxious to get back to this build .

Thanks for looking at the start of my next adventure.

All the other logs for The Duchess of Kingston are full of facts about this ship so you can read about it there if you like.

Much appreciation to the staff at MSW and NRG   for all the help they've given me over the past 3 years and to all who have help along the way thanks.

    SO let's build something.

Excellent choice.   Good luck.    You should have no problem producing a beautiful model.      I am building the same one and am at the stage of rigging the ratlines.    My wife who is not a big ship model fan saw my project and was really impressed to the point she said that it must be displayed in our living room!!!

Well  I tryed to work on my Mississippi diorama, but the alure of the Duchess is overpowering.  The frame work for the hull came together effortlessly,  just follow the instructions.

The next thing you know I was at step  60.

Last night I did a bit of fairing on the bow

.Just a bit, and then I ran a plank over it to see how I was doing. I think the bow is ready . At the stern it looks like I have to fair a bit more. Peice #20 looks as though I have to sand it right off lol.

I don't see any problems looking at the manual.  And so far things just fit right and feel great.

I got a couple of medical procedures  over the next few days so building will slow , but back at it Saturday  morning  for sure.

I have been studying,  rigging,  inperticaler the serving of the lines. I am having a hard time with this. I have difficulty trying to understand  numbers and writing.  I have started do research on this. But pictures are hard to come by. I have been practicing with my servo machine,  just using left over thread. Is there a scale I could use, I can't figure out how to get the right size. Let's say for instance  I wanted a 1.0 mm line for the shrouds,  would I use a .75 line served with a .25 mm line.  And when serving do you use the same threa d size for all the serving. Lots to try to understand,  but I will. Because I want the Duchess  fully rigged.

Ok off to see the doctors,  talk soon my friend's.

Thanks for lookin in on my log. My Ship Inspector  Private Gnomer Pile  is so happy, all he has to do is say the answers are right here in the instructions, READ them again lol.

later my freinds.                 Bob M

The fairing is finished I think, may have a little more sanding as I go along. So I bent the bulwarks Wensday, and installed  them last night. They went pretty good, port side is off a bit , but ok for me lol.20240807_220738.thumb.jpg.d28044b3b6c85d7a88aec155f44cce58.jpg

20240808_155405.thumb.jpg.07a5b62ae9d52c4bc833787c8dd39ee2.jpg

20240808_171044.thumb.jpg.db6dd47a13a0ae75a31888c17fa5fcf0.jpg

I bought these cutters for photoetch,  and got some fuzz free line for serving lines. I know I am getting ahead of myself with rigging  and serving lines, but I have no idea what to do so research is needed.

A BIG thankyou for @Moonbug for directing  me to @Blue Ensign log that has lots of info on sizes for serving. And thanks Blue Ensign for posting all that info. @Keith Black also sent me a great log for rigging,  thanks my freind. .

I made a few test lines, then I made my frist line, 15 inch of served line, but only parsts of it will be used, it was my frist line so I didn't expect great  results. 20240808_150026.thumb.jpg.5bb292cfd2e04ebc33bfab443d52ffa2.jpg

The bottom line was the frist it came undone , never glued it. The top line was made to be .5mm and the middle one is my first attempt at. 75mm but I think it closer to 1.0 mm lol. But with all the useful  information I have recived, I will have this serving business  under control.

So now that the bulwarks are installed  I am up to step 71.20240808_173504.thumb.jpg.caad92d1ee3a0d5ba89c9aef700f266f.jpg

This is one thing , I like about this kit, the Instructions. You see here, it tells you which size and gos on to explain how to install them. Not like others that I have done, lol. I did one model that when I got to this stage it said.,  Step 15 install planks on side of ship.  that's it,  Really  .

20240808_174255.thumb.jpg.ac258d24322f5777410c33c187a2fff8.jpg

Pile likes the first attempt,  we can use this line for blocks and things. 20240808_173612.thumb.jpg.ff2f80f622417973830b001f0cc9801a.jpg

So with that it's on to the planking. The Mississippi diorama will have to wait , this is so much fun . Things are running smoothly,  and I got a clean bill of health from the doctor yesterday,  cancer free. I am glad that's over now, for now at least.  So with a bigger grin then anyone can imagine,  and much to the chagarin of sum I will be posting and modeling for a very long time I hope.

Thanks everyone,  MSW/NRG are high on my list of people to thank

Thanks for peeking,  love modeling and having the time of my life. I let you know how the planking go's,  lol.

Thank you so much everyone  :). The list of people I need to thank is so long I need time to complete it.  Thanks,  next post .

Yes I am a very happy  man,  MSW/NRG  is my biggest windfall. My ships my not be just right,  but neither am I :P they are fun to build.

I am going to paint the bottom of the hull white. But I would like to plank it so good that I should leave it natural.  Lol. Ya right paint it is .

20240814_015701.thumb.jpg.da04bae24e0666f019c7c981ea443cd9.jpg

I soaked the outer side patterns  like the book calls for.

Then today glued them on.

PFC Gnomer Pile,  he loves that title,  says we are a bit off but some sanding will be able to fix what I thought   was going to be OK, it was just a little  off, my fault  My first,  I'll fix it moment.  lol.

It was fairly easy,  the pins lined up well and you just glue it together.

All of the pin holes  line up,20240814_134740.thumb.jpg.c60436a9a539b965bb2012d870301c82.jpg

Wow, there is just so much to learn, I am researching  serving lines, @Keith Black , @Glen McGuire, @Moonbug , @Blue Ensign , and all the logs for the Duchess of Kingston,  I have taken notes from everyone  of them thanks for posting those logs. Peter , everyone  thanks so much . You guys  are the best. I'm overwhelmed.  I know it's the kit :D but I think this one should be my best effort,  then the Pegasus will be mastered lol.

Have a great day everyone,  I think the glue is dry got to go .  Lol.

The keel went smoothly. So I started planking, then for some reason  :D,panic set in as I thought, oh 0 boy those inner patterns  look like they don't line up.20240816_102006.thumb.jpg.9858f324825e7ae06ab7768e452b2906.jpg

But all the plugs lined up.  But will the cannons fit. I had to find out ,so I quickly put one together,  They will all fit perfectly.  Big Grin. :D

Time to start planking, again.

20240816_103240.thumb.jpg.14dc081f0c154dc2faa53772e3ddc012.jpg

The portside was going well.  Then for what  reason I messed up a bit. The great news is, remember I was going to paint the hull if my planking was bad. Yep painting the waterline for sure lol.20240816_184746.thumb.jpg.729416870c6e443ac312af8206e8e459.jpg

20240816_184802.thumb.jpg.af710f20be5a83a9da934cc025296f90.jpg

So I have one last try at planking a side of a ship the way it is supposed to be. 20240816_102344.thumb.jpg.e4c2d0e0349e1e03ae2df6cc80be3925.jpg

Hopefully I will get it right this time. I think I know were I went wrong  😕. Some of my planks were tapered the wrong way, and too much, way to much fun in the shipyard lol. . Like I say I have one more kick at the cat, then my next four builds have no planking.  Can't say that I will  miss planking though   But they have plantey of RATLINES. My favorite.  lol 😆 😅.

Thank you  @Gabek , for all your help and figures,  so glad we met. And I appreciate your patience with me lol  😆

@chris watton  Thank you for this kit, I will try to make her look presentable at least I hope  so lol. When I look at all the logs for The Duchess of Kingston,  I say to myself,  they all look great  should I even put it in the gallery,  lol,

Its a very enjoyable experience,  this Vanguard Model. Chris you must hear that from every  frist time  buyer of your models. They are just incredible,  the Instructions are fantastic,  even I can understand them. I love when you say,

At this stage, your model should look like this.  Big grin 😆. Close but no cigar lol.

Onward to the properly planked starboard side.

Thank you everyone, I just love learning how to build ships, their's so much to learn, I am very glad for MSW AND NRG and all the support and information here.THANK YOU. Every one

All of you will be in my thoughts and prayers tonight. As I lay my head down a very greatful shipmate , a happy Vanguard  owner  lol.

@Glen McGuire ,like the mythical Canadain Penguins,  there are  no Canadain Rats, they all come from Norway .Being a nice guy, I feed those Norway rats,  lots as much as they can eat. I have banquet set up all over the place. Lol.

PFC Gnomer Pile is preparing a firing squad  if I don't plank the starboard side up to his standards  😤

20240816_215227.thumb.jpg.951b39cd3e20cda80100e602801dc0b4.jpg

One more time I reviewed @Chuck video  in our MSW data base.1000006092.thumb.jpg.c48d02d633e6d6036c029ebcbdd486b5.jpg

1000006093.thumb.jpg.3335adf93707586d7de3e79724d5de83.jpg

I made four  bands, tapered  the planks and got started. Things were going good, the first two bands went ok. Then I switched to the bottom,  G plank and four planks up. That's when I had a slight change in plan. But I booted that cat , pretty good,  not a touch down, but a  maybe a  field goal. 🤔  Pile says he given me an unconverted touch down. I like it .It is my best side ever

Big Grin 😀 😁  The stren was a challenge  I have a little cosmetic surgery to do,  but not bad after all the parts are added.

I do need to get a different  gold, the one I have has glitter  in it. But I have all the other colors I want  for this ship.  Also I have made some good advancements  in the serving  of lines. It's all new to me so it's extremely exciting  to try, serving

Thank you all for looking in,  ok I may be a bit bias but I think this will be my best build ever, but it's because of the great kit that I stared with that makes the difference, between nice and extraordinary  😀

Thank you so much for looking and likeing  , and for all the help I gotten  over the last 3 years, and you guys thought I was not paying attention  lol. Happy with my planking job.  So close to doing it right lol. But it's mine . Big Grin.  😁.  Model on my friends, model on.

Sorry it took so long, but I had to cut the grass. The joys of having yards.20240819_123617.thumb.jpg.fa38a043d06e6375fbdf73f299d8dddb.jpg

So I figured out were the water line should go, using my thrid hand  I made the mark.

Then taped it off and primed  it.

Well it was still all taped up I put a couple of coats of the finish white. I know this brand of paint , I like it but this will now take 3 or 4 days before I can handle it with out leaving  finger prints . Oh well lots of other things to get done now. The first Mate says I was in a rush to paint the best planking I have done so far, I told her no one will see , but I will know it was planks right, then I stood up and screamed Nailed It. Lol. She said it was nice but don't let it go to your head.
