The Third Class compartment is completed with the installation of the luggage racks:

That part was really delicate as these structures are made of brass wires glued to white metal supports. The mesh is made of plastic, glued with acrylic Gator glue. I hope they will survive the building of the roof.

Moving to the roof: it is very similar to planking a hull on Bulkheads. Planks are dipped in alcohol and gently curved by hand to espouse the shape of the roof ends:

Everything is glued with TiteBond3 (Quick and Thick) and provides a very strong frame for the car.

The roofing continues. By far the most delicate part of that kit:

PA150030.thumb.JPG.0470c35073e3b364207740c9042fdfab.JPG

I have not finalized the ends yet. Lots of sanding has to take place, before I reach a decent shape.

Again, as always, your best friends are a vacuum cleaner and a source of gently compressed air. The inside will require a very thorough cleanup.

Keep up the good work, Yves. Reminds me of the old Westwood Models passenger car kits for the old wooden passenger cars of primarily the late 1800s. They didn't do interiors and the windows and doors were plastic. You built them on the plan sheet covered in wax paper and pinned up while the glue dried. Just like the old balsa planes. 😄

The roof is pretty much completed:

PA160026.thumb.JPG.0f22932b93dd584e7f86b9e48e12cab4.JPG

A few coats of Tamiya Light Grey and it will do:

PA180027.thumb.JPG.b1117c8f52427f6e2e715fa3e876b61e.JPG

The most delicate is cleaning up the inside, using a small vacuum cleaner, a fine brush and a lot of blows (panting...). The top section can be removed to get a good glance inside:

It is top heavy for sure....

A quick peek inside: Third class....

Second Class....

And the bathroom:

Next, I will be working on both ends of the car, and then focusing on the underneath. In the meantime, the inside door must be installed.

Both ends/vestibules have been assembled:

On this side (above), the metal part holding the right flag was missing from the kit. I replicated it from a 2 mm brass rod and a small piece of wood cut accordingly. Fortunately, this was the only missing part in the kit....

The next steps will be the building of the underneath of the car, with its braking system, battery boxes and various reservoirs. I also have to plan the support for KADEE couplers, in case this car ever runs on a layout.

I am trying to finish the underside of the coach:

PB230035.thumb.JPG.d4d9b0322df4fe86d78ebe78a1b76e42.JPG

Another couple of parts missing from the OCCRE kit: the straight cables/bars, as you can see below.

PB230036.thumb.JPG.d94b3dd76642b9a7e4ebb274bb81bdcf.JPG

I replaced them with 2 mm brass wire, but that is forcing me to paint them, instead of being able to keep the metal shine. This is the third part missing from this kit, all in the cast metal section..... Not good for Occre.

Alright, we are getting close to the end. I have the trucks and couplers to complete...

A few updates on this passenger car: I have just completed the ends. I gave up on the couplers provided by OCCRE, as they are not reliable, are not prototypical and makes no sense. Instead that Spanish car will be equipped with American knuckle couplers from Kadee. This way, I will be able to pull this car with an American engine and it will look better overall.

I still have to paint the trucks, which is not an easy task as the wheels have to be protected from the spray. We are coming to an end for this kit.

I realized that I never posted the final pictures of the finished model. There, they are:

The trucks, painted and lubed for a smooth rolling:

The car on its truck, ready to go down and up the Costa Brava and pick up all the sun tanned Catalan girls from the beaches:

PB070084.thumb.JPG.92b6646e6090cd6014a82cf4b74e9ed2.JPG

The couplers are not the European/Spanish couplers. I converted them to American style that will allow me to run that car pulled by one my engines (if I ever get more than 4 or 5 feet of tracks):

PB070085.thumb.JPG.1d0a64a3f4bd852c1f9e9bfe5a171800.JPG

That's it. It was not an easy kit to build and I would strongly encourage the modifications of the trucks, if you intend to use your model as a rolling/operating car.

Great build, Yves. We have an outdoor G scale layout at the depot in Hendersonville, NC. You should check it out on our site: https://avmrc.com/

There is a video, too.

You guys are lucky. The HO layout is fantastic and the G scale outside is pretty neat. Great location to be in an old railroad station.

Here in Raleigh, NC there is nothing and all the model railroad clubs have disappeared with one exception. Being the Capital of the state, the city council is more interested by filling up their pockets with the developers and the price of rents has killed all clubs one by one. Being in the "Triangle" with more than 4 millions people, it feels very lonely to be one of the rare people who model in 2 rails O scale and Scale 1. There used to be also a guy with a fantastic outdoor layout on Ten-Ten road, where you could actually ride on the cars. Parents started using his facility as a "watch-my-kids" place, while they went shopping elsewhere. He had to close his layout to the "stupid" public. The other great place (The Red Barn in Wilson) closed a few years ago, after being flooded and their HO layout on the second floor was dismantled.

Very sad state of affairs around here.

How long have you lived there, Yves? There is just one hobby shop remaining in Tampa, Fl right now. I don't know of any model railroad shops in Tampa anymore.

We're mostly internet for train goods. The one brick and mortar store has random hours and isn't much good for smaller scale anything. he does stock Mike's Train House. We do have train shows at the Ag Center near Asheville Airport, but need to wade thru a lot of heavily used stuff to patronize dealers with current equipment. Or all the ready to run. I'm a builder. :(

I do attend some RPM shows to see new techniques and equipment, but my old traveling companion passed away a month ago. There will be a meet in central NC next year, either in High Point or possibly in the Charlotte area.

Craig, I remember going to Chester Holly's in Tampa in the early 80s. It was a large tin building, with a Cadillac in one area. Loads of kits. Had to get down on the floor to see labels. 😄

35 years. I have seen the complete destruction of all Model Railroad clubs (O, HO, N, LGB) and most Hobby Shops. There is only one Hobby Shop left in Raleigh, NC called Nick's Trains. Small place but very useful. The reason the guy is still there is because he owns the land and the building.

It’s been long gone for a number of years. That shop was less than 2 blocks from my old house, not too far from MacDill AFB. It was packed full of model RR things!
