Just had a look through your log. I'm not a great follower of Victory builds so haven't really visited before but, wow, you are doing fantastic work on her. Superb!!!

thankyou everyone for the comments, very much appreciated

the victory build is going on hold for a little while,

several reasons why, but the main one is that, I like to think ahead, in this case the HMS Druid build, to that end I am going to try a little project to see if I have the skill to take on that challenge

so for a while my posts will be on the Section Triton build

Much as I hate to see your Victory put on hold, I like your decision to do the Triton cross-section. I also did it to prove to myself that I could do a framed scratch build if I chose to. Go for it Kevin.

LOL - come next Monday, everything will be back to normal, I will have used up all my wood, by converting it to sawdust, all my blades will be blunt or broken, and I will throw the whole idea of doing scratch out of the window, and I will have a brynes sander on the way that will never be used

 

seriously though - I am looking forward to it, a break from the Victory wont hurt me

They say a change is as good as a rest ,  i can,t see the Triton being a problem , a challenge yes  but not a problem . Good luck ,i will be watching

The 1/12 Fisherman's cottage needs to be completed before Christmas, otherwise i am dead the Victory, Bismarck and Br 52 all await attention as does my presence on the dark side with the Triton

Good morning everyone

 

Foremast is now complete and ready for painting (photo to come later),  but I have a question

 

I appreciate that on a real vessel masts were able to be removed, but in a scale representation do i permantly fix the mast into position. or continually tweak the position during the standing rigging stage

Hi Kevin,

 

I know that some people like to glue/pin their masts in position, but I have never found it necessary. The Standing Rigging will hold it securely in place, and if ever the ship were to be damaged, it is then an easy matter to remove/replace the mast (which would not be the case were it to be glued/pinned).

I'll take the other side Kevin. I've always preferred the stability provided by gluing the masts in place. I guess that this is one of those things that each of us decides for themselves.

WORK IN PROGRESS

 

after three attempts i got the main mast nearly finished, looks a bit wonky , (because it is), still to pin the pieces together

 

then a quick trip into the sunshine, although the sun is quite low and throwing all the settings out on the camera

 

hope to have everything sprayed the right colours within a work or so

they should be ok all the sections have brass rods through them to give it some strength and allow me possibly to do the rigging in stages - but at present nothing is glued-

Hi Kevin,

 

Wishing you a Very Prosperous 2015. Your Victory is looking superb!

 

I would suggest that why your main topgallant mast looks 'wonky' (especially for Sjörs: Collins English Dictionary – unsteady, askew, liable to break down) is because there is something wrong at the doubling. It looks to me as if two sections of the mast (topmast and topgallant) are not quite in line, causing the upper mast to be out of true.

 

I am sure you could correct it before you continue.

the picture was just a work in progress, non of the section were lined up and when on top of the bin for the photo shoot - i could not reach the top to make it look better, they are all now  dis-assembled at present awaiting a new compressor for my air brush, it should all then be ok
