HMB Endeavour by kiwiron - FINISHED - OcCre - 1:54

Recommended Posts

Nice work Ron. Did you do the X stitching on the spritsail? I can't remember seeing it on the sails I got with mine, I must go look.

I remember when I made my first endeavour i used some old I white sheets to make the sails then after a few years of us smoking in the house (back in those days!) they were dingy brown from nicotine stain.

Cheers Steve

Thanks chaps, the X stitching was there already. The tie off points for the sails are very confusing on the plans,i'll just put them where I think they should go.

I've put some tie down ropes on the sails but I can't get them to hang down straight.I've tried ironing and different glues but nothing holds.Any ideas would be good.I might haveto just can the idea and leave them off.

Ron, try a fabric stiffener (more robust than starch) which is usually available at an arts and crafts, or sewing supplies (Spotlight if in NZ?) - an alternative might be "stop-fray" .  You will need to position the ropes initially, spray and reset where necessary.  Just a suggestion not sure how permanent these will be though?

cheers

If at first you do not suceed, try, and then try again!

Maybe a 50-50 mix of white glue and water???   Did you wax the line first?

Hi Ron

Try thoroughly wetting each of the reef ropes with water let it soak in for w while then tease them into position with a paint brush. I'm assuming that the ropes are natural fibre, they should stay in place once dry. If not use diluted PVA glue applied with a paint brush.

Cheers

Steve

Hi Ron

To get them to lay down, you should have waxed them like Mark said.

After waxing them, tie a knot at the back of the sail put a spot of glue on.

Turn it over to the front of the sail and do another knot, then another spot of glue but at the same time hold the tail of the rope down wards let it dry.

The glue will hold it straight down.

You will have to pass the rope through some wax about 3-4 times on each side.

Hope this helps you.

Denis

Thanks a lot for all of your advice. The thread is Caldercraft I presume it's natural.I tried wetting and glue but that didn't work so i'll do it again as you've suggested with wax etc.

I've given up on the reef ropes for now I tried nearly every idea but nothing worked for me,maybe try different thread later on.Onto attaching a few sails, just need to make sure they aren't back to front like the first couple I did.Trial dry fit on the ship as well.

Hi Ron

Don't understand why you cannot get your ropes to hang down.

What sort of wax are you using, and what glue for the knots.

Send me a PM and I will take you through it if you wish.

Your build is looking fantastic.

Denis

I will send you some wax that I use, but you may have the same one please let me know.

Hi Ron yours sails are looking very good, she is going

to look like the real thing when done.

I found this pdf the other day, a bit late for your sails but there is other info in it.

I don't know if you have seen it.

More sails on,i didn't think there was so much rigging on the ship,i did have 150 metres of it,not much left now.No idea the purpose of boom pendants a bit of a strange mounting position on the plans.
